Seizures & Epilepsy 🧠✨
At Peninsula Care, we want to raise awareness about epilepsy and seizures — a condition that impacts the brain and can cause sudden episodes known as seizures (or fits). While epilepsy currently has no cure, proper management and treatment can help control the symptoms.
What are seizures?
Seizures can manifest in various ways, including:
🔹 Stiff or floppy muscles
🔹 A sudden fall to the ground
🔹 Involuntary jerking or twitching movements
🔹 Loss of bladder or bowel control
🔹 Staring into space and losing awareness of surroundings
🔹 Unusual sensations like strange smells, numbness, tingling, visual changes, or feelings of fear
🔹 Odd behaviours such as fidgeting or wandering without awareness
Most seizures last only a few seconds to minutes and tend to stop on their own. Some people remember their seizure afterward, while others may not.
Who is affected?
Epilepsy can begin at any age, but it's most common in young children and adults over 50.
What to do if someone has a seizure:
Having a care plan is vital. It details steps to take, including administering emergency medication and knowing when to call emergency services (999). If you are trained and aware of the person's care plan, you can provide appropriate assistance safely.
Remember, knowledge and preparation can make a real difference.
