Are you taking your — and your kids’ — light health seriously? 👀💡

In today’s world, it’s not just adults…
our kids are growing up surrounded by artificial light.

Phones. Tablets. TVs. LED lighting.
Especially in the evening — when their brains should be winding down.

The challenge?
This light is heavily weighted toward blue wavelengths that tell the brain:

👉 Stay alert
👉 Delay sleep
👉 Keep going

Over time, this can impact:
• Sleep quality (for both you and them)
• Focus and behaviour
• Eye comfort and strain
• Overall development and wellbeing

That’s why we’ve developed our own range of blue light blocking eyewear — for adults and children.

🟠 Ideal for evening screen use
🟠 Supports natural sleep rhythms
🟠 Helps reduce digital eye strain
🟠 Designed and tested in practice

Because better light habits don’t just improve how you feel…
they shape how your kids grow, sleep, and function every day.

Protect your eyes. Support their future.

Pop in-store or message us to find the right pair for you and your family 👓

Hope everyone had a great Easter break.

We’re closed today, but back open tomorrow morning from 9:30.

Spent a good bit of time outside over the weekend now that spring has just about arrived 😅

It’s been a Long winter.

Months spent indoors…
Artificial light.
Screens.
Reduced natural exposure.

And now you’re feeling it.

Fatigue.
Poor sleep.
Low mood.
Struggling to focus.

I see this every day in practice.

And it’s not just about your eyes…

It’s about the signal your eyes send to your brain.

Your eyes are the primary gateway for light into your body.

They don’t just help you see —
they regulate your circadian rhythm, your energy, your sleep, your hormonal balance.

When that light environment is dominated by artificial blue light…
and lacks natural full spectrum sunlight…

Your system becomes dysregulated.

👉 The timing is off
👉 The intensity is off
👉 The spectrum is off

And over time — you feel it.

That’s why getting back outside matters.

Natural light — especially in the morning — helps reset that system.

It tells your brain:
• This is daytime
• Be alert
• Set the clock

Then later, your body knows when to wind down.

Simple input.
Powerful output.

So after a long winter, don’t underestimate this:

Get outside.
Let natural light hit your eyes.
Move your body.

It’s one of the most powerful (and overlooked) tools for your health.

Morning light is the first input your biology expects.

Within 30 minutes of waking.
Before food. Before screens.

Light sets the clock — hormones, focus, mood, sleep.

As a Light Health Optometrist, this is always step one.

Get outside.
Let the eyes and body calibrate the way they’re designed to. 🌅

As an optometrist, one of the most fascinating things about vision is just how fast light interacts with our biology.

When a photon of light hits the eye, the retinal chromophore inside opsin proteins changes shape in about 200 femtoseconds.

That’s 0.0000000000002 seconds.

To put that into perspective, a nerve impulse travelling along a neuron takes milliseconds.

In other words, the very first step of vision happens around ten million times faster than an action potential in a nerve.

Before a neuron fires.
Before the brain interprets the signal.
Before hormones or metabolism change.

Light has already interacted with and changed your biology.

This is why the light environment you live in matters far more than most people realise.

Light isn’t just something we use to see.

It is information for the body.

Most people think an eye test is simply about checking how well you can see.

But as an optometrist, I’ve become increasingly aware that light affects far more than vision.

Light is one of the most powerful signals your body receives every single day.

Morning sunlight helps set your circadian clock, increases cortisol in a healthy way, improves mood, and supports metabolism and energy levels.

But modern life has flipped our light environment upside down.

Many people spend their days indoors under artificial light, then their evenings exposed to bright screens and LEDs late into the night.

The result?

• Disrupted sleep
• Eye strain and digital fatigue
• Poor circadian rhythm
• Hormonal imbalance

As an optometrist, I’m increasingly focusing on what I call Light Health — helping people understand how their light environment affects their eyes, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

Because protecting your vision today isn’t just about glasses.

It’s about understanding the light environment you live in.

We didn’t just change our technology — we changed our biology.

Modern LED lighting is heavy in blue light and almost completely missing near-infrared — a spectrum we evolved with from sunlight and fire.

🔬 Near-infrared light supports mitochondrial function — the tiny power plants inside our cells, including those in the retina.

When mitochondria struggle, energy drops. Vision suffers. Metabolic health declines.

This isn’t about brightness.
It’s about biological balance.

Your eyes — and your mitochondria — still expect the full spectrum.

👁️ Light matters. More than we were ever taught.

Hi Alan here - Pivoting my professional career slightly in recent years has reintroduced me to fundamentals I learned at school — and explored in depth during my optometry degree at Anglia Ruskin University

Light was central to everything we studied — optics, refraction, visual perception.
But strangely, the health effects of light — especially in today’s digital world — never really made it into mainstream optometric practice.

As an optometrist, I test sight, provide optical correction, and detect ocular disease.

Yet I’ve come to realise that how we interact with light — artificial vs natural, blue light vs red — plays a far greater role in our health than I was ever taught.

And many of the symptoms we now see every day — digital eye strain, headaches, poor sleep, circadian disruption — all tie back to our modern, light-toxic environment.

This realisation sparked a new direction in my career — one that led to the development of HODL Eyewear: a Bitcoin-inspired, blue light-blocking eyewear brand designed to protect vision, support better sleep, and raise awareness of light health.

It’s also led me to explore how energy is stored and transferred, not just in biology, but in economics — and the parallels between food, light, and even Bitcoin are striking.

I’ve written a new blog post unpacking this idea:
👉 How Food and Bitcoin Are Both Stored Electromagnetic Energy
If you’ve ever wondered what photosynthesis has to do with proof-of-work, this might surprise you. Linked below and if you want to know more just ask in our Newtownstewart store 🤓

Discover how sunlight, food, and Bitcoin all store energy — and why understanding this could transform how you think about health, time, and value.
