Understanding Bone Stress Injuries
Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are commonly caused by repeated, strenuous loading on bones during weight-bearing activities such as running, jumping, or high-impact sports.
These injuries are graded on a scale from 1 to 4, with Grade 4 representing a full stress fracture. Early recognition and management are essential to prevent more serious injury.
Causes and Contributing Factors
BSIs can occur in individuals with normal bone density but are more likely in those where factors such as:
β Inadequate nutrition
β Poor recovery or sleep
β High stress levels
β¦are present and affect the bodyβs ability to adapt to physical demands.
Both adults and children often underestimate the energy required to support sport, study, and everyday life. In children, Vitamin D plays a particularly important role in bone health and development.
Common Symptoms of Bone Stress Injuries
Watch out for:
β A gradual onset of pain in a specific area
β Pain that worsens after activity or sport
β Delayed pain (e.g., the next day)
β Increasing discomfort over time
Why Early Assessment Matters
The time needed to heal a BSI depends on its severity. If left untreated, a lower-grade injury can develop into a stress fracture, resulting in longer recovery times.
In fact, 20% of athletes who suffer one stress fracture are likely to experience another if contributing factors are not addressed.
