At Quest Holistic Therapies, we understand the importance of discussing mental health with nuance and care. Recent comments by former Health Secretary Sir Jeremy Hunt about anxiety and depression highlight the need to critically evaluate our approach to mental well-being. His suggestion that we might be 'over-medicalising' normal traumatic events encourages us to reflect on how we address mental health.
Research shows that social isolation can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression. Sir Jeremy stresses the importance of social contact, suggesting that keeping individuals engaged in the workforce can lead to better mental health outcomes. What are your thoughts on this?
Moreover, engaging our thoughts is vital for managing mental health. Techniques like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) help reframe negative thought patterns, promoting a more positive outlook. Equally important are rest and relaxation, which prevent burnout and build resilience.
As we navigate these challenges and the strain on services, let's advocate for a balanced approach to mental health that values both scientific understanding and compassionate support. Together, we can foster a community that prioritises healing, connection, and recovery. 💚
The Former health secretary, Sir Jeremy Hunt, says people shouldn't be signed off work for anxiety and depression and that society is 'over medicalising' the impact of normal traumatic events.
He told Mail Online: "I think it’s immoral we are signing off 3,000 people a day saying they don’t have to look for work. The majority of those have anxiety and depression and the one thing they need is social contact. If you sign them out of the world of work, their anxiety is going to get worse rather than better."
