Hey everyone! đ Have you ever noticed that the more you try to relax, the harder it becomes? Or that forcing yourself to fall asleep can actually keep you awake longer? đ¤
Thatâs the essence of the Law of Reverse Effect (sometimes called the âLaw of Reversed Effortâ). Itâs a principle in hypnosisâand in everyday lifeâthat says:
âThe harder you consciously push to do something that should happen automatically, the less likely your subconscious will let it happen.â
Hereâs why it matters:
Sleep Struggles: If you lie in bed thinking, âI have to sleep right now,â your brain feels pressured and stays alert. But if you let go and accept wakefulnessâparadoxicallyâyou often drift off more easily.
Performance Anxiety: Ever had âstage frightâ when giving a presentation? Trying too hard to remember every word or nail every moment can backfire. Relaxing and trusting your training usually leads to a smoother delivery.
Memory Recall: That frustrating âtip-of-the-tongueâ moment? Pushing to remember often pushes the answer further away. Let your mind wander, and itâll pop in out of nowhere.
In hypnosis, practitioners use paradoxical suggestions: they might say, âDonât relaxâkeep your muscles tense!â Of course, you canât stay tense forever, so your body naturally lets go, and boomâyouâre relaxed. đ
Next time you catch yourself overthinking or forcing something that âshouldâ be easy, try a little reverse psychology on your own brain:
1. Acknowledge the struggle (âOkay, donât relax, stay tense!â)
2. Let go of conscious effort (âI give up trying so hard.â)
3. Watch the magic unfold as your subconscious takes over.
