WHAT IS REACTIVE ABUSE?
Reactive abuse happens when someone provokes you - intentionally or repeatedly - until you react emotionally and then use your reaction to label you as the problem. It’s a manipulation tactic designed to shift blame, distort the truth, and make you question your sanity.

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
They push you, poke at your boundaries, or trigger deep emotional wounds until you finally snap. Maybe you raise your voice, cry, or fight back and suddenly, they act like victims. Their behaviour disappears into the background, and your reaction becomes the focus. Reacting to mistreatment doesn’t make you abusive. It makes you human. But in environments where emotional expression is dismissed or labeled as ‘too much’, it’s easy to feel like you’re the problem.

THE CYCLE
Step 1: They provoke - using criticism, comparisons, or guilt that hit where it hurts the most
Step 2: You react - out of frustration, pain or sheer exhaustion
Step 3: They blame - shifting the focus to your reaction while ignoring their own behaviour

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Name the pattern: recognise when guilt, shame, or care is being weaponised
Step back before engaging: If you feel triggered, pause and give yourself time to process before reacting
Build your circle: Find people who see, hear and validate you’re experiences

Your peace is worth protecting - the therapists at Chapter House are here to help you

Emotional Abuse in relationships can be subtle.

This highlights a typical pattern that abuse can take.

DARVO (an acronym for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender) is a psychological manipulation used to avoid accountability and blame the victim.

The concept was coined by Jennifer J. Freyd, a professor of psychology, in 1997.

If you are struggling in a relationship and would like to unpackage your emotions and feelings, therapy can help.

If you have resonated with the tactics used on the Power & Control Wheel, it can be difficult to know what to look for in a healthy relationship. This is where the Equality Wheel can be really helpful as it offers an alternative. If you lay the Equality Wheel over the Power and Control Wheel, you’ll notice they are corresponding opposites:

FAIRNESS AND NEGOTIATION instead of Coercing and Threatening
NON-THREATENING BEHAVIOUR instead of Using Intimidation
RESPECT instead of Using Emotional Abuse
TRUST AND SUPPORT instead of Using Isolation
ACCOUNTABILITY AND HONESTY instead of Minimising, Denying and Blaming
RESPONSIBLE PARENTING instead of Using Children
SHARED RESPONSIBILITY instead of Using Privilege
ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP instead of Using Economic Abuse

The Equality Wheel visually represents healthy relationship dynamics.

The therapists at Chapter House can help you to heal from past or current relationships.

Abuse within relationships can take many different forms.

Sometimes the recipient does not realise that what they are experiencing is classed as abuse.

The Power and Control Wheel summaries all forms that domestic abuse can take.

Admitting to being the recipient of abuse takes a lot of courage. However, it is the first step in working out a path ahead - either within or moving out of the relationship.

Counselling can help greatly in terms of support, grief, self esteem, fear and clarity of thinking.

The therapists at Chapter House can help you to heal from past or current relationships.

Introducing our latest therapy space - The Green Room.
We have recently created a beautiful calm retreat in the centre of Chapter House.
This room blends coziness with practicality.

The Green Room is now available to rent by the day or half day to all experienced therapists (minimum two years post qualification).

Whilst we always welcome all enquiries to join our team, we are particularly interested in hearing from Couples counsellors and therapists who offer supervision.

Our room rates are highly competitive and we are very happy to discuss requirements over a coffee.

Joining Chapter House isn’t just about renting a room. We continue to focus on creating a supportive professional community of therapists working together under one roof. There are regular opportunities for attending our peer development group, resource sharing and occasional social events.

If you are interested in finding out more, please get in contact via our website enquiry form.

This is Lynn Elsdon-O’Brien.

Lynn offers a calm and kind therapeutic space to her clients. She is an integrative therapist with a person-centred core approach, which means she works alongside her clients in an empathic, non-judgemental and genuine way, using a range of therapeutic approaches that respect their needs as a whole person. She finds it an enormous privilege to nurture the client’s process of becoming unstuck: “I love to support people to find a balance of clarity and compassion in their self-discoveries”.

Lynn has experience working with a range of client issues, including grief, loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, identity issues, discrimination, relationship issues, anger, stress and self-worth. She specialised in working with bereaved clients in her time at Cruse, and in working mindfully and somatically in her time as a counsellor at Mindful Therapies. She has continued to train in trauma informed therapeutic approaches.

Before qualifying as a therapist, Lynn’s fascination with the psychological benefits of reading literature led her to achieve an MA on the topic; she also facilitated shared reading for wellbeing groups in prisons, homelessness provision and libraries, and later taught English. She continues to bring her fascination for exploring personal response to literature into the therapy room, with clients that are open to bibliotherapy (reading fiction and poetry therapeutically).

If you would like to find out whether Lynn might be a good match for your needs, please get in touch via the Chapter House website or directly through her website.

This is Lizz Bennett.

She is a BACP registered psychotherapeutic counsellor who works with adult clients, and qualified at the Northern Guild in Newcastle. Working Psychotherapeutically means exploring how a client’s past has shaped their present, building insight and awareness about patterns of thinking, doing and being, and considering what might be holding them back.

She offers a warm space where clients can feel heard, supported and seen, just as they are. She would describe her approach as unpretentious and real, aiming for genuine connection. She works collaboratively, prioritising her client’s autonomy and believing firmly in their inner capacity for knowing what they need. The relationship she creates with clients is at the heart of her practice, providing them with an experience of deep empathy, meaningful connection and mutual respect.

She is a passionate ally to marginalised communities and works hard to hold an intersectional lens. As an anti oppressive practitioner, she actively acknowledges the impact of systemic inequalities on everyone’s lived experiences, and holds space for her client’s full self. She is attentive to power and privilege and is committed to providing affirming, inclusive support for all.

She offers a free, initial 15 minute telephone call so you can decide whether she’s the right therapist for you. Please get in touch via the Chapter House website or via her website.
