🕯️ Proud to Support Our Local Winter Memorial Service 🤍

At Turnbull’s, we’re proud to once again support North Tyneside Council’s Bereavement Service and this year’s Winter Memorial Service, taking place at Tynemouth Crematorium on Wednesday 26 November at 2pm.

This annual gathering offers a gentle and meaningful way for anyone who has lost a loved one to come together, reflect, and remember. The service is open to everyone, regardless of faith or belief, and includes readings, music, and a quiet moment of reflection.

You may notice the little robin featured on the service artwork — a comforting symbol for many, believed to represent loved ones visiting or watching over us. A small reminder that those we miss are never far away. ❤️🪶

Each guest will also receive a wildflower ornament, made from paper containing wildflower seeds. You’ll be invited to write the name of your loved one and either take the ornament home to plant, or leave it to hang on the Christmas tree in the Crematorium’s Book of Remembrance Room, before being placed in the Garden of Remembrance. 🌿

Light refreshments will be served afterwards, offering time to share memories and gently connect with others who understand.

We’re honoured to support this service alongside some wonderful local partners — Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Cruse Bereavement Support, Bloom, and the North Tyneside Learning Trust — all of whom do incredible work within our community.

✨ If you’re looking for a gentle space to remember a loved one this winter, we warmly invite you to join us. Whether you come alone, with family, or with a friend, you’ll be met with care, understanding, and community.

To attend, please reserve your place by Tuesday 18 November via the Bereavement Service:

NEW SIGN OF THE TIMES ✨
After more than two centuries in North Shields, our name still stands for family, tradition, and care — but it’s now shining a little brighter.

We’re proud to unveil our new signage at Turnbull’s — a small but meaningful reminder of who we are and what we stand for:
Family Funeral Care since 1790.

Still independent.
Still local.
Still here for our community.

A huge thank you to NE Display Ltd for bringing our vision to life so beautifully. 👏

- It’s not purely a cremation, it’s personal, local, and dignified.

We’ve all seen the TV adverts promising a simple, low-cost service. But simplicity shouldn’t mean distance, or a lack of dignity and care.

At Turnbull’s, we offer that same straightforward option with genuine local care, compassion, and personal attention.

When you choose us, it’s a personal, local and dignified service built around what matters most: your loved one, your wishes, and your community.

Here’s what we offer — often at a similar cost to the large national providers:

🕊️ Your loved one is cared for here in North Tyneside by our trusted, local team.
🏠 You have the option to visit them in our private chapel of rest.
👗 They will be dressed in their own clothes, just as you’d wish.
📅 You can choose the date of the cremation to suit you and your family.
🌿 The service takes place at your local crematorium.
🎵 Their favourite music can be played on the way to the crematorium.
🚘 The hearse can pause at a special place along the way, if you’d like.
⚱️ Ashes are cared for with dignity and kept locally for as long as you need.

It’s not about cutting costs, it’s about care, compassion, and doing things properly. Because every family deserves a farewell that feels right.

❤️ Turnbull’s — Honouring lives, supporting families since 1790.

- Not just any old seal… 🦭

We’re proud to display the Golden Charter seal — and while this one might make you smile, the seal that really matters is the mark of trust on our door.

It shows we’re an independent, local funeral director you can rely on — not a distant call centre or corporate brand. It means when you plan ahead with us, you’ll speak to the same caring team who’ll look after you and your family when the time comes.

Walruses might be wonderful… but this is the seal that really matters. 🪶

Plan ahead with your local independent funeral director.

“A farewell as unique as the life it honours.”

Like so many, I’ve been moved by the tributes to Ricky Hatton last week — not just to the incredible boxer he was, but to the person behind the gloves. One thing that really stood out was his beautifully personalised coffin and the iconic Trotters Independent Traders car that formed part of the cortege.

It’s a powerful reminder that a funeral doesn’t have to follow a set formula. It can — and should — reflect the individual. Over the years, we’ve helped many families do exactly that. From bespoke coffin designs and meaningful colours to including special vehicles like vintage cars, tractors, or motorbikes, those personal touches can make a farewell truly unique and deeply meaningful.

For me, that’s what this work is all about. It’s not just about saying goodbye — it’s about telling someone’s story one last time, and celebrating everything that made them who they were.

And as we mark World Mental Health Day this week, Ricky’s passing is also a poignant reminder that behind every smile, every success, and every familiar face, there may be battles we don’t see. If there’s one thing we can all do, it’s to check in with those around us — have the conversation, ask the question, and be there for one another.

Our doors are always open if you ever need a chat. Sometimes the smallest conversation can make the biggest difference. 🩵

- We’re thrilled to be supporting Heaton Stannington Juniors U8s this season! ⚫️⚪️

Ben Broadhead was delighted to be invited along to their recent signing evening — the buzz in the room was fantastic as the youngsters got ready for the season ahead.

At Turnbull’s, we’re passionate about supporting local sport — from football and rugby to golf — helping young people stay active, make friends, and enjoy being part of a team.

Alongside supporting clubs like Whitley Bay Sporting Club U9 Blues, North Shields Juniors AFC, and Benfield Juniors Girls U17s, we’re proud to back Heaton Stan U8s as they start their new campaign.

Sport brings people and communities together — something that’s always been at the heart of who we are as a family business.

Good luck to all the players, coaches, and parents — we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! ⚽️👏

A great day taking part in the Golden Charter Growth Club this week.

Golden Charter work closely with independent, family-run funeral directors across the UK — bringing together like-minded businesses to share ideas, learn from one another, and keep improving the care we provide to families through our pre-paid funeral plans.

Days like this are all about making sure we continue to offer the very best for the families who place their trust in us — from thoughtful planning to personal, local support every step of the way.

I picked up some great ideas and look forward to working even more closely with Golden Charter — and continuing to share ideas with other like-minded businesses in the profession.

And as a lifelong Newcastle fan, it was a real treat to round off the day with a tour of the cathedral on the hill, St James’ Park! ⚫️⚪️

- Today is World Mental Health Day 💚

In our work, we often walk alongside people during some of the most difficult days of their lives — when they are grieving, overwhelmed, and trying to make sense of immense loss.

We hear so many stories from families about things they wish they’d said or done — the chat they didn’t have, the message they never sent, the friend they didn’t check in on. Those moments of regret remind us just how much small acts of kindness and connection really matter.

So today, please be kind to yourself and to one another. Cross the road and speak to that neighbour. Send the message you’ve been meaning to. Have the chat with the mate you’re worried about. Those simple gestures can change someone’s day — or even their life.

At Turnbull’s, our work is not just about providing a service — it’s about listening, caring, and supporting people when they need it most. And that extends beyond the funerals we arrange. Our doors are always open if you’re struggling and need a chat. You are not alone, and support is always here when you need it. 💚

If you or someone you know could use some extra support, there are some brilliant local initiatives here in our community:

🔴 The Red Bench Project – a growing network of benches across North Tyneside designed as safe spaces to sit, reflect, and talk.
👥 Andy’s Man Club – free, confidential men’s peer support groups meeting weekly across the region.
🏡 Mind North Tyneside – offering mental health advice, support and community groups locally.
📞 Samaritans – available 24/7 on 116 123 if you ever need someone to listen.

👑 The Prince’s Foundation – recently launched a major new initiative focused on suicide prevention, encouraging open conversation and early support before a crisis point is reached.

⭐ A heartfelt review we’re truly grateful for.

It means so much when families take the time to share their experience with us — especially during such a difficult time.

Julie’s kind words about Matthew, Naomi the Flower Girl and Jessica remind us why we do what we do: to guide families with care, patience and understanding, and to help create a day that truly honours their loved one’s life.

Thank you, Julie, for trusting us to look after your dad and your family. 💛

I don't usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to share our experience. As a family of 3 after losing our dad, we arrived at Turnbull's with very different thoughts about how we wanted to say goodbye.

Matthew was kind and patient, listened to our concerns and hopes, took us slowly through our options and made suggestions until we got to a place where we were all happy. He introduced us to Naomi, the flower girl (who is so talented) and Jessica Laing, who delivered our dad's Eulogy beautifully, capturing our dad's life perfectly.

Working together, the day felt very special. When we started this journey, it felt very daunting, but by the time the day came, we knew we were in good hands. I was asked the following day how I was, and I could honestly say that I felt peaceful for the first time since my dad died. I felt we did Dad proud, and for that I will always be thankful to the team at Turnbull's, along with Naomi and Jessica.
