You’ve probably heard a lot of big-budget funeral adverts on the radio recently. As an independent family business, we choose to invest differently.

We invest in people, not promotions.
In support, not shareholders.
In care, not campaigns.

Every penny we spend stays here in North Tyneside. It supports local charities, youth teams, community projects and the organisations that make this area what it is.

Our entire team is employed full-time. We don’t use zero-hour contracts, and we don’t hire staff from outside the local area. The people who look after your family are the same people you meet in the community every day. We live here. We work here. And we truly care about this place.

That is what independence really means. Real people. Real care. A commitment to North Tyneside that no national advert can match.

🪶 From Furnishers to Funeral Directors – A name with meaning 🪶

Before we were called funeral directors, we were proudly known as Funeral Furnishers – a title full of quiet charm and meaning.

To furnish a funeral was to provide everything a family needed – the coffin, the drapery, the horses, the care. It wasn’t just about objects, but about offering guidance, preparation and presence when words so often fall short.

At Turnbull’s, we’re still rooted in that tradition. Still based on the same North Shields street where our family has been for decades. And while the name has evolved – from furnishers to undertakers to funeral directors – the values haven’t.

We still believe in doing things properly. In taking our time. In keeping things personal, not corporate. And above all, in caring for every family as if they were our own.

We may no longer be called furnishers, but in many ways, we still are — quietly furnishing what matters most: time, care, and compassion.

If the word “furnisher” rings a bell, or if your family has a Turnbull’s story of its own, we’d love to hear it. 💬

Pre-paid planning – New Year, straight talking.

New Year’s resolutions aren’t always about gyms or big lifestyle changes.

For some people, they’re about finally having a conversation and getting things sorted for the family.

At Turnbull’s, we often hear the same thing at this time of year:
“I just want it sorted so my family don’t have to worry.”

That usually doesn’t start with firm decisions.

It starts with a chat, a cuppa and talking through what you want, what you don’t, and what would help your family when the time comes.

Those conversations really matter. We see time and again how much peace of mind families take from knowing they’re doing what was wanted, rather than second-guessing decisions at a difficult time.

For some, that conversation leads to pre-paid planning, knowing both the wishes and the finances are taken care of in advance.
For others, it’s simply about writing a few wishes down, with no commitment at all, so their family aren’t left guessing.

And if you’d like help talking things through, or turning those thoughts into a plan, we’re here to help, at your pace. We’re also proud to hold the Golden Seal of Approval from Golden Charter, offering added reassurance for anyone considering a pre-paid plan.

There’s no obligation. No rush. No pressure.

If it helps to get the conversation started at home, we’ve put together a simple funeral wishes form you can look through or fill in together:

I’m all for modern ways of working and for improving how we do things. Change can be a good thing.

But sometimes, the old ways really are the best.

One thing I’ve never been comfortable with is the idea of a “funeral arranger” — someone you meet once, plan everything with, and then never see again. A model that’s become common in many large, corporate-run firms.

At Turnbull’s, we don’t work that way.

From the very first call, families deal with their funeral director. The same person who listens, plans, cares for your loved one, leads the funeral on the day, and supports you afterwards.

There are no handovers. No explaining things twice. No meeting a stranger on the day of the funeral.

Instead, we build real relationships with families. Over time, that trust often grows into something deeper — and in some cases, we’re told we feel like an extension of the family.

Because this isn’t a transaction. It’s a deeply personal journey.

And when it comes to something this important, sometimes the traditional way, done properly, is still the best way.

- As we lay down our top hats and frockcoats for the final time this year, we pause to reflect on the families we have had the privilege of serving throughout 2025.

Behind every funeral is a life, a family, and a story that matters. To be trusted with those moments is something we never take lightly, and it remains an honour we approach with care, compassion, and deep respect.

We are also deeply grateful to the many people who work alongside us every day. Celebrants, crematoria and cemetery teams, clergy, NHS staff, hospitals, nursing homes, and all those who quietly support families at their most difficult times. Your care and professionalism make a difference more than you may ever realise.

As the year draws to a close, some will be looking ahead with hope, while others may be carrying quiet grief into the New Year. Wherever you find yourself, please know you are in our thoughts.

From our family to yours, we wish you peace for the days ahead and comfort in the year to come.

Our work is not defined by loss, but by love.

It is about being present when families need us most. Listening. Supporting. Guiding them through a goodbye that feels right for them.

We feel privileged to care for families across our community, and we never take that trust for granted.

- It’s always lovely to be thanked, but even more so when it comes in the form of a beautiful card, a handwritten note, and artwork designed by the YMCA North Shields youth group.

Thank you to YMCA North Tyneside for such kind words. Supporting their work, from community events to helping bring a bit of Christmas magic to local children, is a real privilege for us.

We’re proud to support organisations that do so much for young people and families across our community, not just at Christmas, but all year round.

-

Dear Ben & the team at Turnbull’s
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for your incredible kindness this year. You truly embody the qualities of a fantastic trustee, from your supporting Golf Day to your wonderful generosity in sponsoring Santa’s grotto and book drive which was so appreciated by local children. We had a lot of them meeting Santa for the first time and you helped us make that experience magical!
