- Saturday's Grand National Day 🐎

Grand National day and the beautiful horses that come with it — it feels only right to look back at our own connection with them here at Turnbull’s.

Pictured is my great-grandfather, Jim Turnbull Snr, standing proudly outside E Turnbull & Son on Albion Road, alongside the horse-drawn carriages that were once at the heart of what we did. He had a real love for horses, and they played such an important role in the business all those years ago.

Some of you may even remember the stories of the horses being ridden up the ramp to the first floor — something that still gets talked about to this day.

Turnbull’s on Albion Road still stands today, full of history, memories, and generations of care.

Times have changed, but the pride hasn’t.
Just as we were then, we remain proud of our fleet today and, more importantly, the work we continue to do within our community.

We hope everyone enjoyed the race 🐎

- A really thoughtful initiative we’re proud to be part of 💛

Alongside North Tyneside Council and local bereavement services, we’re supporting a memorial service at Tynemouth Crematorium on Wednesday, 13th May at 2pm.

It’s open to anyone who has lost a loved one, no matter when or how. A simple opportunity to pause, reflect, and remember in a supportive setting.

For some families, particularly those who have chosen a direct or unattended cremation, this can offer a meaningful moment to come together and remember in their own way.

Guests will be invited to write the name of their loved one on a special seeded butterfly, something you can take home to plant or leave in the Garden of Remembrance.

These moments of remembrance can mean a great deal, and we’re honoured to be involved in something so meaningful for our community.

If you would like to attend, please contact the Bereavement Service on (0191) 643 6070 or email bereavement@northtyneside.gov.uk to reserve your place (by Thursday 7th May).

- Easter means different things to different people.

For some, it’s a time of faith and hope — a reminder of new life and looking forward.

It’s also an opportunity for families, friends and communities to come together.

For others, it’s in the smaller things… traditions, familiar places, and thinking about someone who should be there.

However, this weekend feels, it can be a time when someone is especially missed.

We’re thinking of those remembering loved ones this Easter.

- We’re proud to support a number of local grassroots sports teams across North Tyneside, including:

• Heaton Stannington U8s Football
• Whitley Bay Sporting Club U9s Football
• North Shields U8s Football
• Percy Park U11s Rugby
• Benfield Girls U17s Football
• Tynemouth Golf Club Juniors

Supporting young people and grassroots sport in our community is something we’re incredibly passionate about.

It’s also something very personal to me. My grandfather was a huge supporter of junior sport and always encouraged me and my brother growing up, whatever we were playing. It meant a lot then and it still does now, and I’m very proud to continue that in some small way today.

A lot of what makes these clubs so special happens behind the scenes. There’s a huge amount of time and effort given by volunteers, coaches and families, often unseen, but it’s what keeps everything going.

We’re always proud to play a small part in supporting these brilliant clubs and the people behind them 💙

You may have seen recent stories about reviews in our profession.

It’s a difficult thing to read, because when someone is arranging a funeral, trust matters more than anything.

But what often gets missed is what those reviews really are.

They’re not just ratings or kind words.

They’re written by someone who has just been through one of the hardest moments of their life.

They’re written in the quiet after everything has happened.
When the funeral is over.
When the reality has settled in.

And in that moment, someone chooses to sit down and write.

Not because they have to.
But because they want to say thank you.
Because something we did mattered to them.

Every review carries a feeling.
You can hear the relief.
The gratitude.
Sometimes even the love they have for the person they’ve lost.

That’s what makes them so important to us.

They’re not marketing.
They’re not numbers.
They’re real people, sharing a real experience.

And we never take that lightly.

If you ever read our reviews, we hope you don’t just see words on a page.
We hope you feel the person behind them.

Because that’s what we feel every time we read one.

💌 Letters to Loved Ones 🌿

Have you visited the Book of Remembrance Room at Preston Cemetery?

It’s a beautiful, peaceful place to pause and reflect — and now home to our dedicated letter box, where you can leave a personal message to someone you miss.

This initiative has been funded and sponsored by Turnbull’s, in close partnership with North Tyneside Council’s Bereavement Services and the dedicated staff at Preston Cemetery. Together, we’re honoured to provide this space for remembrance and reflection, ensuring families have a gentle and meaningful way to stay connected with loved ones.

- - - - - - - - -

✨ How it works:
Collect seeded paper from the Book of Remembrance Room or directly from Turnbull’s.

Write your message of love, remembrance, or gratitude.

Post it in the letter box at Preston Cemetery.

Our team will carefully collect and plant your letter in the Garden of Remembrance, where your words will grow into a lasting tribute. 🌸

Ben Broadhead, seventh-generation director of our 236-year-old family business, said:

“We hope the post-box brings comfort to those grieving a loved one. Grief can be difficult to express, and this offers a personal way to feel connected to those they miss.”

💌 Whether it’s a short note, a memory, or simply words of love — your message matters.

- We’ve had a little visitor turn up outside our North Shields office today…

It looks like someone’s much-loved little friend has been left behind and is now patiently keeping watch out of the window 👀

If you recognise this and it belongs to you or your little one, please pop in and collect it. We’ll keep it safe until then.

Please feel free to share so we can get it back where it belongs 💛

I went to see a family recently who were considering a direct cremation after the loss of a loved one.

At the time, it felt like the simplest option and for some families, that is absolutely the right choice.

But later that evening, after some quiet reflection, her husband began to feel differently.

He said he just couldn’t go ahead without some sort of send-off.
Not something big or elaborate, just something that felt right.

I went back to see him the following day, and we talked everything through.

I explained that a funeral doesn’t need to be complex or overwhelming.

It can be simple.
Meaningful.
Full of love.

Together, we created a small, straightforward service that he felt comfortable with.

Nothing elaborate. Just a moment to pause, reflect and say goodbye.

And in the end, that meant everything to him.

We do find this happens more often than people might think, families initially choosing a direct cremation only to later feel they’ve missed that opportunity to say goodbye.

There is no right or wrong decision.

Sometimes people just need a little time to reflect, and that is what we are here for.
To guide, to explain and to help families find what feels right for them.

If you ever need a conversation, we are always here.
