Feeling sniffly? Itchy/watery eyes? The tree pollens have arrived and causing many people to feel the troublesome effects of hay fever. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen (typically from trees, grass or weeds). It can start at any age and at anytime in your life and lasts for weeks or often months.
We recommend getting started on your normal treatment around 2 weeks before symptoms usually arrive. Branded drugs are no better than the generic drug versions, you don’t need to spend a lot to get the effective medications.
Treatments can include:
💊 oral antihistamine tablets/syrup e.g. fexofenadine, loratadine, cetirizine, chlorphenamine which are all available to buy cheaply from supermarkets, pharmacies and online via amazon etc. People respond to antihistamines in different ways so there isn’t a better or stronger option.
👁️ Eye drops can help if you have itchy, sore or watery eyes e.g. sodium cromoglicate which you can buy or opatanol which is prescription only.
👃 Nasal steroid spray can help with snuffy/itchy/runny nose but also help some of the eye symptoms e.g. beconase, pirinase, clarinase etc which can be bought from pharmacies and supermarkets and avamys/nasonex etc that need to be prescribed. As with the antihistamines, there is not a “better” brand or spray, different ones suit different people - so it can be a little bit of trial and error.
Some people aren’t getting the full benefit of their spray as they aren’t using it correctly, these links are really helpful to show you how to get the most out of your spray:
