We understand there is a lot of concern and confusion around Meningitis B - we are receiving a lot of queries about Men B vaccination so have put together some FAQs:

Meningitis B vaccine:
> Only offered to children between 8 weeks and 2 years of age who are due the vaccine as per national vaccine schedule (which was introduced in 2015)
> Patients without a spleen are also offered vaccination
> Those in ‘at risk’ areas with outbreaks will be contacted by Public Health
> University Students – only option is to seek privately
> University workers need to discuss with their employer

Meningitis ACWY Vaccine:
> Usually given in Year 9/10 at school
> If you are not vaccinated and between 16-25yrs we can arrange a routine nurse appointment for a vaccination (must be before the 25th Birthday)
> If you are unvaccinated and missed the vaccination at school (and People aged over 25 who are close contacts of patients who have meningitis ACW or Y will be informed by Public Health if they need to be vaccinated.

We cannot give any routine vaccinations privately at PMG - if you are keen to explore this, please look at other providers.

The most important thing is to be vigilant regarding the symptoms of meningitis and if you suspect meningitis or sepsis, seek emergency medical input via 999 or A&E.

Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been confirmed in Kent. Sadly, 2 people are known to have died. It's important to know the signs of symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. Get more info from NHS.

Easter is coming up, if you need your repeat medication ahead of the long bank holiday weekend - please do request this in good time.

It takes 5 working days to process routine requests at the surgery and then each community pharmacy has their own waiting times.

We will be closed 3rd April for Good Friday and 6th April for Easter Monday.

Feeling sniffly? Itchy/watery eyes? The tree pollens have arrived and causing many people to feel the troublesome effects of hay fever. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen (typically from trees, grass or weeds). It can start at any age and at anytime in your life and lasts for weeks or often months.

We recommend getting started on your normal treatment around 2 weeks before symptoms usually arrive. Branded drugs are no better than the generic drug versions, you don’t need to spend a lot to get the effective medications.

Treatments can include:

💊 oral antihistamine tablets/syrup e.g. fexofenadine, loratadine, cetirizine, chlorphenamine which are all available to buy cheaply from supermarkets, pharmacies and online via amazon etc. People respond to antihistamines in different ways so there isn’t a better or stronger option.

👁️ Eye drops can help if you have itchy, sore or watery eyes e.g. sodium cromoglicate which you can buy or opatanol which is prescription only.

👃 Nasal steroid spray can help with snuffy/itchy/runny nose but also help some of the eye symptoms e.g. beconase, pirinase, clarinase etc which can be bought from pharmacies and supermarkets and avamys/nasonex etc that need to be prescribed. As with the antihistamines, there is not a “better” brand or spray, different ones suit different people - so it can be a little bit of trial and error.

Some people aren’t getting the full benefit of their spray as they aren’t using it correctly, these links are really helpful to show you how to get the most out of your spray:

We receive regular requests for weight loss injections (GLP-1s) such as Mounjaro and Ozempic. We are unable to prescribe these for obesity at the current time. We are only able to initiate them for eligible patients with type 2 diabetes.

You may have seen media outlets reporting that GPs will now be funded to provide this. From April, there will be changes to the GP contract and it MAY mean we can prescribe these important medications for specific groups of patients. We expect there will be very tight eligibility criteria and we have no specifics regarding this service as yet.

You can help us by keeping your details up to date, if you think you are overweight or obese - let us have some recent weight/height readings (use the ‘update your details’ tile on the prioryCARE form. This means that if we are able to offer these medications, we can identify the appropriate patients.

We will update our website and social media if the prescribing and funding position changes. See more here:
