Hearts & Minds - Counselling & Coaching For All Ages Offering services for all ages, using a person centred, integrative approach tailored to your specific needs and goals.

A specialised service is also available to children & young people through the medium of sand tray and play therapy. Hi, I’m Jackie, an experienced Counsellor and Life Coach. I’m passionate about working with people to regain good mental health and wellbeing, supporting you to ‘grow through, what you go through’. Whatever you’re facing that is making it harder for you to experience life without pa

in, anxiety, stress or sense of value and purpose, I’m here to listen and help you navigate your way through. By providing a non-judgemental, therapeutic, confidential space, you will find the sense of safety and support you need to explore your life and things that are important to you. We will work together to build your understanding of what you are feeling and why, and help you find your own way of moving forward from where you are now, to where you would like to be. So, whatever the reason is that has prompted you to explore further support, whether that is:

• Struggling to know who you are or be the person you once were

•. Experiencing triggers and flashbacks that cause extreme distress or feelings of detachment

•. Avoiding people and situations because of overpowering emotional and physical responses

•. Feeling stuck in spiralling thought patterns and unhelpful behaviour that impact your health and wellbeing

•. Constantly battling critical internal dialogue that affects your confidence and ability to trust your own judgement.

•. Experiencing difficulties in managing stress, expectations and finding balance in life

• Finding it hard to cope with a planned or unplanned change in family, relationships, work or health

• Or perhaps you have exhausted your own ways of coping and don’t know what else to do? If this sounds like something you are currently experiencing, you may find counselling is the right step for you. Finding the right counsellor is so important, so I hope that by sharing more about myself, it might help you decide if you feel I might be the right person to work with you. I am a professionally qualified Counsellor registered with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I have completed additional training, post qualifying with Place2Be, a children’s mental health charity, providing emotional and therapeutic support to children and young people. I have also undertaken specialist counselling training to work with survivors of sexual violence. More recently, I qualified as a Life Coach, which enables me to offer additional ways of working with clients, especially when addressing mind sets and limiting self-beliefs. You will find me to be a naturally warm and down to earth person with a calm, compassionate manner that will help you feel at ease and accepted. I am creative and flexible in the way I work and can offer many approaches so each session can be tailored to best suit you. I integrate various models of therapy with my main Person-Centred approach, including CBT and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Before becoming a Counsellor and Life Coach, I worked extensively in communities supporting children, adults and families for many years. I have previous experience as a Youth and Support worker, Foster Carer and Women’s Project Coordinator providing specialised support to women who have experienced domestic abuse, sexual assault and childhood trauma. My experience and training provides a solid base to work with individuals of all ages. I understand how difficult childhood experiences impact child development and behaviour, affecting families and also adults later in life. I’ve found that my understanding of children and young people is also valuable to parents who are undergoing particular parenting challenges. Other experience includes working with individuals affected by a wide range of life issues, complex mental health conditions, personality disorders, Autism, ADHD and chronic health conditions. For those who would like to include their Christian faith in their counselling sessions, I am able to offer Christian counselling, but also work with those of a variety of beliefs or no faith background.

What are the benefits of Counselling and is it for me?
If you approach mental health with a preventative care mindset, you can catch and treat downward trends in your emotional well-being before they become bigger problems.
There are many ways to change how you think, feel, and act but therapy is usually the quickest, most effective, safest route to do it. Also, if you catch issues early, they may need less work and care to be resolved. Therapy is for everybody and can help you anytime you’re working through a behavioral or emotional issue.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is pressing forward when you feel afraid. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. YOU are more important so be kind to yourself.....

Having worked with children and young people for over 25 years, I am passionate about supporting their development in every sense, including their wellbeing.
The statistics around young people's mental health are concerning as seen below:

One in eight children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem, and many continue to have these problems into adulthood.

50% of those with lifetime mental health problems first experience symptoms by the age of 14.

Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years.

Children are less likely to suffer from serious mental health difficulties in later life if they receive support at an early age.Growing evidence indicates that promoting positive mental health also improves a range of positive school outcomes, including attitudes to learning, better attendance and lower exclusion rates.

At Hearts & Minds I support children's mental health by providing therapeutic play. Play is a child's natural language; children are able to express themselves through play in ways they can't vocalise. As a counsellor observing a child play, I learn, empathise and see the world through their eyes because all behaviour is communication.
Children communicate through play, explore through play and can learn new skills through play - therapy for a child is really a 'hands on experience'.
Therapists and counsellors can help children make sense of their world by finding metaphors that relate to the child's life hidden within their play. Through this process the therapist can eventually help the child "restory" their play, which enables a child to move through difficult situations in their life.
Some great examples of this can be found in the article below written by a families and children's therapist:

How was your weekend and how are you feeling now? Mine was busy and reflective leaving me feeling tired, but a good tired. So today I am investing in rest and charging my batteries ready for the week ahead. Busy does not always mean productive, especially when we are run down, distracted or just out of sync.
Therefore picnic is packed, suncream is on ready for a day of recharging in beautiful countryside.
A long time ago, a well known Jewish king wrote;
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside the still waters,
He restores my soul”

Our souls can not only be refreshed but restored beside pastures of grass and waters of rest.

Find rest for your soul today, invest in rest.

Sandtray is a powerful form of therapy that is offered to clients at Heart & Minds.
The use of sand and images in the sandtray activates, stimulates and co-ordinates all functions of the brain. This is significant because when there is a traumatic event the images and emotions can get trapped in the right side of our brains. For example, have you ever seen a picture that affected you in a certain way, both mentally and physically, but you struggled to put it into words? That happens because information is first processed in the right side of our brain where emotions and images reside. We process information first with pictures and THEN words are attached.
Using sandtray allows us to bypass our blocks to self awareness, enabling the individual to access unconcious emotions and thoughts, and process situations that are hard to articulate.
As a counsellor I can facilitate clients to explore worlds and images that they build in the the sandtray and support them to find understanding and healing from unresolved trauma, conflict or emotional difficulites.

Hi and welcome, thank you for stopping by. I hope that you will find something of interest, help or encouragement here.

I’d like to share a little of myself and my passion for supporting people of all ages uncover their true selves, find healing and experience a greater sense of freedom, joy and peace.

Why counselling?

At certain times in our lives, we all encounter difficult or challenging situations. Family and friends can be a great support yet occasionally we may need someone outside of our family and friends network to talk to and help us make sense of what we are feeling and experiencing. Counselling can be helpful for example, when we feel anxious, depressed or suicidal, have suffered a loss/bereavement, feel stressed and unable to cope, lack confidence or experience relationship or family difficulties. At other times we may simply want an opportunity to explore who we are and what gives meaning to our lives.

Therapy can also be helpful for children and young people who are having problems understanding or regulating their emotions. They may communicate through challenging behaviour or be withdrawn. Creative therapies allow children to process their feelings in non-verbal ways, whilst building their coping skills and resilience levels.
