I’d like to share a little of myself and my passion for supporting people of all ages uncover their true selves, find healing and experience a greater sense of freedom, joy and peace.
At certain times in our lives, we all encounter difficult or challenging situations. Family and friends can be a great support yet occasionally we may need someone outside of our family and friends network to talk to and help us make sense of what we are feeling and experiencing. Counselling can be helpful for example, when we feel anxious, depressed or suicidal, have suffered a loss/bereavement, feel stressed and unable to cope, lack confidence or experience relationship or family difficulties. At other times we may simply want an opportunity to explore who we are and what gives meaning to our lives.
Therapy can also be helpful for children and young people who are having problems understanding or regulating their emotions. They may communicate through challenging behaviour or be withdrawn. Creative therapies allow children to process their feelings in non-verbal ways, whilst building their coping skills and resilience levels.
We all have times in our lives when things don't go the way we expect, plan or want them to. It could be because of something that happened in the past, is happening now or that you think might happen in the future. Whatever it is, counselling can help you cope with whatever you are going through.
Why Hearts & Minds Counselling?
I have over 22 years of experience supporting children and families in various roles through the voluntary and private sector. My personal and professional experiences have given me an insight and understanding of the many and varied issues that affect people such as loss and separation, bereavement, trauma, abuse, ill mental and physical health, financial issues, unemployment, family & relationship difficulties, identity issues, addictions, substance misuse, self harm, eating disorders, offending and criminal behaviour.
As a counsellor, I can offer you or your child a flexible approach to therapy, tailored to meet the individual’s needs. My main aim is to help you feel ‘at home’ and comfortable by providing confidential counselling in a homely setting where we can look at whatever is troubling you at your own pace. Being a creative person and trained in various forms of therapy I am able to provide different ways of helping you or your child explore thoughts and feelings via art therapy, sandtray therapy, play therapy, all of which can be informed through either a Person-Centred, Solution Focused or CBT approach. My counselling room is well stocked with resources should you wish to make use of them to help you articulate what you are experiencing.
I am an active listener with a warm, compassionate and calm manner and you will find all sessions are relaxed and non-clinical.
I'm passionate about personal development, and would love to work with you to help you understand yourself, so that you can grow and develop in a way that feels right for you. I also strongly believe in early intervention, especially where children are involved. As a volunteer counsellor with Place2Be, a leading national Children’s Counselling Service in schools, I witness on a regular basis the positive impact therapy has, even from a young age.
Research results taken from Place2Be’s website highlight the need for early intervention https://www.place2be.org.uk/our-story/why-our-work-matters.aspx
“A wealth of evidence points to a significant need for early mental health support:
One in eight children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem, and many continue to have these problems into adulthood. (1)
50% of those with lifetime mental health problems first experience symptoms by the age of 14. (2)
Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years. (3)
NHS England estimates that poor mental health costs the economy, NHS and society £105 billion a year in England (4)
Children are less likely to suffer from serious mental health difficulties in later life if they receive support at an early age, providing a cost saving to adult mental health services. Growing evidence indicates that promoting positive mental health also improves a range of positive school outcomes, including attitudes to learning, better attendance and lower exclusion rates.
