Ross Gemmell - Osteopath Osteopath & Director of Multi-disciplinary Health Care Clinics, Northallerton & Easingwold Osteopaths

Osteopaths aim to help people who are in pain by using a combination of articulation, mobilisation, massage and manipulation techniques and often prescribe exercises to further aid the issue. Osteopathy is a hands-on primary healthcare service that is suitable for almost anyone and can treat or contribute to the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Osteopathy is a system of medicine that aims to relieve pain and improve the function of the body by concentrating on the connection between the structures of the body and their function. These structures include muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and connective tissue. Other services on offer are;
Kinesiology taping – beneficial for musculoskeletal and sports injures and postural issues. Dry needling (Acupuncture) – beneficial for musculoskeletal and sports injures as well as chronic pain.

This is a very common shoulder complaint for a wide range of ages. For the cases I see in the clinic, it is the most common cause for pain in the front of the shoulder.

How to treat it:
▫️Address underlying cause (usually poor activation of lower trapezius + serratus anterior)
▫️Soft tissue techniques to the Bicep, Delt, Pecs, trapezius and other surround musculature dependent on the individual
▫️Joint mobilisations and articulations at the shoulder
▫️Prescribed exercises beginning with simple activations then progressing to more advanced work if necessary
▫️Lifestyle advice and gradual reintroduction to exercise, hobbies and day-to-day activities

This injury can be dealt with either our Osteopaths or our Sports Therapists. For injuries that have gone on for a longer period of time and has also had poor success to other treatment, I would try Osteopathy in the first instance.

Had a fun time delivering a talk to the Sport & Science students at Selby College 🎓⚽️

We spent the day exploring careers in health care related to sport - from Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy to Sports Therapy - discussing what makes each profession unique and where they overlap.

As someone who runs a multi-disciplinary health care clinic and has worked alongside physios, sports therapists and chiropractors over the years, plus 10 years of experience as an Osteopath, it was great to share real-world insight into the profession.

I personally only discovered Osteopathy after a fairly serious lower back injury at 15, and it made me realise how little awareness there is for these careers among young people. You shouldn’t need an injury to learn about opportunities in this field - and that’s exactly why I wanted to be here today.

The feedback from students was great, and I’m glad they found the session valuable 🙌

Thanks for having me, Selby College - looking forward to the next one!

A huge thank you to all of our patients for your incredible support this year to help with our success in the UK Institute of Osteopathy Awards 2025 🙌💙

We’re extremely proud that not one but TWO of our associates, Amy Crompton and Lucinda Cross, made it into the Top 5 for Associate of the Year, with Amy taking home the prestigious award recognising newly qualified osteopaths. An amazing achievement!

We’re also truly grateful to have reached the final of the UK Large Practice of the Year award for the third year running. Winning last year was an honour, and to be highly commended again this year means the world to us.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support - we couldn’t do any of this without you 💙

We’ve made the final again!

As you may have heard, we have made the final for the UK practice of the year award for the 3rd year running.

After winning the award last year, we would absolutely love to win it again this year.

This year, our main talking point has been promoting Osteopathy as a career and inspiring people into the profession - so far this year, we have totalled 260hrs+ of observations and mentoring in our clinic to students considering Osteopathy as a career.

To add to the excitement, our Osteopaths and have made the final for the UK Associate of the year award. We are super proud of both of them and take our hats off to them for all their hard work this year.

A huge thank you to all our patients who voted for us and supported us again this year, it truly means a lot to the whole team.

Wish us luck at the awards next month 🤞

Internal Rotation ❌ Hip wear & tear

This movement always shows up as impaired when we examine a degenerative hip.

Does reduced Internal Rotation mean you have Osteoarthritis at the Hip? - No

However, maintaining sufficient movement at the hip in this direction is one of many effective ways at delaying the onset of wear & tear at the hip socket.

If you do have reduced movement here, even if you are young I would advise spending a bit of time working on this to delay your hip wearing out.

Other signs of reduced/pain on internal rotation can include labral deformities at the hip. These can be definitely managed with hands-on treatment & exercise. So, if you have concerns get in touch 👇🏻
