Something I see quite often is children (and adults) who are identified as having ADHD… but there are also underlying autistic traits that aren’t always recognised straight away.

ADHD can sometimes ‘mask’ autism because the more visible behaviours tend to be things like:
• impulsivity
• high energy
• difficulty focusing

But underneath that, there might also be:
• sensory sensitivities (noise, clothing, food)
• a need for routine or predictability
• social differences (finding friendships confusing or tiring)
• big emotional responses that feel hard to manage

Sometimes those quieter traits get missed - especially in children who are coping well on the surface.

It’s not about labels for the sake of it…
It’s about understanding what’s really going on so the right support can be put in place 💛

If you’ve ever wondered about this for your child, you’re definitely not alone.

Before the week ends… what’s one small win you’ve had?

(It doesn’t have to be big — getting through a tough day absolutely counts.)

I’ll go first: getting outside for a few minutes of sunshine ☀️

There’s something about a bit of sunshine on your face that just lifts things, isn’t there?

After a long, grey (wet!) winter, I’m definitely noticing a small shift - feeling a little lighter, a little more hopeful. It’s a good reminder of how much the simple things (like daylight and fresh air) can affect our mood.

If you can, take a few minutes this week to step outside and soak it up ☀️

Has anyone else felt their mood change with the brighter days?

Mother’s Day can be a tricky time for some, whether you’re grieving, separated, or just finding it hard to feel ‘celebratory’, it’s okay to feel however you feel today 💛

This Mother's Day we're thinking of everyone who is missing their mother, mothers who are bereaved of a child, those who would have loved to be mothers, and all those who can't be with their mother today, for whatever reason.

I’ve been a little quieter on here lately, taking some time to focus on my counselling training and current wellbeing work in schools.

Supporting children to express and make sense of their emotions continues to be something I feel deeply passionate about — whether through creative approaches like Drawing and Talking or through other tools that help build resilience and understanding.

As we move towards the end of the year, I’m grateful for the meaningful work and connections that continue to grow. 💛

September always feels like a new chapter — not just for children going back to school, but for all of us. It’s a chance to reset, to start fresh routines, and to focus on our wellbeing. For me, this month brings the start of my counselling training and welcoming new clients into Calm Minds Wellbeing. A reminder that it’s never too late to take steps towards growth, whether big or small.

As summer begins to wind down, it’s a lovely moment to pause and reflect. ☀️

Take a moment today to notice something that brought you joy this summer — a simple smile, a walk outdoors, or a little achievement you’re proud of.

Even the smallest moments of calm and connection can leave a lasting warmth as we head into the next season.

My furry companion is taking his own holiday this week — a gentle reminder that we all need time to rest and recharge. 🐾

Even short breaks, fresh air, and a change of scenery can do wonders for your wellbeing.

Wellbeing Myth Busting:

Myth: “You need hours to unwind.”

Reality: Even just five minutes of mindful breathing can help your mind and body reset.

Try this simple exercise tonight:

Sit comfortably and close your eyes.

Inhale slowly for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6.

Repeat for 5 minutes and notice how your body feels.

Small, manageable steps like this can make a big difference when life feels busy or stressful. Even a few minutes can make a big difference — give yourself permission to pause today.

Wellbeing Tip of the Week:

✨ Set a ‘digital sunset’—turn off screens an hour before bed to help your mind unwind.

This small change can make a big difference to your sleep and how relaxed you feel before bedtime. Try it tonight and notice how it feels.

💭 I’d love to hear from you: Did it help? Or what’s your favourite way to switch off at the end of the day?

GCSE results day is nearly here. For many teens (and their parents, including me!), it’s a day of mixed emotions.

A gentle reminder:
✨ Results do not define your worth
✨ There are many paths to success
✨ Be proud of the journey, not just the outcome

If you’ve got a young person waiting for results this week, be kind to yourselves. A hug, a listening ear, and a reminder that they are valued whatever the paper says, can make all the difference.
