January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of sight loss in the UK, yet around half of those affected don’t know they have it. This is because it often develops slowly and without early symptoms. Regular NHS eye tests are the only way to detect glaucoma early and help protect your vision.

While there is no cure, early treatment can slow progression and may prevent further sight loss. If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, or know someone who has, NAB is here to support you. We offer help from our Eye Clinic Liaison Officers, practical advice, information, home visits, helpful equipment and friendly social groups.

This Glaucoma Awareness Month, book an eye test and help spread awareness.

World Braille Day – January 4, 2026

World Braille Day is held every year on January 4 to mark the birthday of Louis Braille, who invented the braille system at just 15 years old. Over 200 years later, braille is still a vital tool for blind and visually impaired people to access reading, learning and communication.

Why braille matters
Braille allows people to read independently, label everyday items and access information without needing help. Many people now use braille through digital tools like braille displays and braille-enabled tablets, but physical braille books are still much loved by many.

How to get involved
You can support World Braille Day by raising awareness, encouraging someone to learn braille or volunteering with a charity like NAB. Even learning the braille alphabet can help someone read labels or signs and feel more independent.

To find out about volunteering opportunities, call NAB on 01604 719193. Let’s celebrate braille and the freedom it brings.

December is Gift of Sight Month

This campaign is all about raising awareness of the importance of eye health and getting regular eye tests. Taking care of your vision now helps prevent serious problems later.

Why are eye tests important?
They don't just check your sight. They can also spot early signs of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and even heart disease. Everyone, including children, should have an eye test at least every two years.

How can you keep your eyes healthy?
Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit, veg and leafy greens. Avoid processed foods, get regular exercise and sleep well.

NAB is here for you
Whether you’ve just been diagnosed with sight loss or have lived with it for years, we offer support through ECLOs, home visits, assistive technology advice, social groups and a Befriending service. Our mobile sight centre also gives you a chance to try out equipment before you buy.

We run a full programme of activities and day trips for adults and children too, helping people connect, build confidence and enjoy life.

Get involved
Book an eye test and encourage your friends and family to do the same. If you’d like to support NAB’s work, a donation, big or small, helps us continue supporting people across the county. Donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/charity/nab

Your vision is precious. Look after it this Gift of Sight Month.

For support, call NAB on 01604 719193.

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Awareness Month

SAD is a type of depression that happens in the winter months when there is less natural sunlight. It can cause low energy, sadness, changes in sleep, and difficulty concentrating.

People with visual impairments are especially affected because their eyes may not detect light properly, making it harder for their bodies to regulate mood.

Getting outside in the morning can help. If that’s not possible, lightboxes and SAD lamps are a great way to boost your mood at home. Just 30 minutes a day can make a big difference.

If you feel low every winter, it could be SAD. This December, take steps to look after your mental health and let the light in where you can.
