To mark Patient Safety Week 2026, we’re proud to highlight how we’re supporting patients, families and carers to feel confident and heard throughout their care.

Call for Concern, introduced as part of Martha’s Rule, is a national initiative designed to empower anyone who is worried that a patient’s condition is getting worse. It provides a direct route to request a clinical review, ensuring that concerns are listened to and acted upon quickly.

If you notice any signs of deterioration or you’re worried about a patient:
* Speak with the nurse in charge of the ward or department and ask for a review.
* If you still feel concerned or feel things haven’t improved, you can contact our Critical Care Outreach Team directly on 07850 883414 and request the Call for Concern service. This service is available to patients, carers, relatives and staff.

Work on our new Emergency Department Entrance and Urgent Treatment Centre continues to progress at pace and the 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱. A large crane is being used to lift several modular building sections onto the site as a part of the current phase. These modules will form new clinical areas that will expand our capacity and enhance the experience and care we provide to patients.

To allow these deliveries to take place safely, Cliftonville will be closed to all through traffic from midday on Friday 13 March to Sunday 15 March.

For information:
• Part of Cliftonville (corner by the NGH Emergency Department) will be fully closed to traffic.
• Only emergency vehicles and urgent Emergency Department drop offs will be permitted.
• Traffic management staff will be on-site at all times to guide vehicles safely.
• There will be no through route for general traffic along Cliftonville during this period.

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
Ambulances will access the site from the east (Cliftonville Road). Patients who need to be dropped off urgently by car will be directed to a designated emergency drop off area by traffic management teams, marked X on our map.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽-𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
All patient collections and non urgent drop offs should use the South Entrance. Traffic teams will be positioned on Cliftonville to divert traffic early and help keep routes clear.

𝗕𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁
The Cliftonville bus stops will be temporarily moved for the weekend (marked on our map). Updated information will be shared with bus operators and displayed on site for passengers, especially those who may require additional support.

𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀
Pedestrian routes on Cliftonville will remain open, although there may be times during module lifting where pedestrian access is paused for safety. Please follow red signs for Paediatric Emergency Department access.

𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀
All of our emergency services have been consulted, and full emergency access will be maintained at all times. Temporary barriers will allow roads to be cleared quickly if urgently required.

We have arranged this delivery on a weekend to allow for minimum disruption, but please do allow extra time for your journey and follow on-site signage and the directions of traffic management staff.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we complete this essential work.

Today is World Kidney Day, a global awareness day highlighting the importance of kidney health.

Kidney disease often develops without obvious symptoms. Early testing and research are key to identifying problems sooner and improving long-term outcomes.

At UHN, we’re involved in research aimed at improving prevention, refining treatments and enhancing care for people living with kidney conditions.

Looking after your kidneys starts with simple steps, managing blood pressure, controlling diabetes and attending regular health checks.

If you are interested in our study, and want to know if are eligible to join, please speak with your consultant. Alternatively, you can contact the Clinical Research Manager 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲: 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮.𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝟴@𝗻𝗵𝘀.𝗻𝗲𝘁

Together, we can raise awareness and support better kidney health for our communities.
