“I don’t remember much about the day I fell ill, but I am certain I would have died if Rachael hadn’t taken that video call.” 💙

Richard Hughes’ life was saved thanks to a new video call triaging service – called Pre-Hospital Video Triaging (PHVT) - launched in February by University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN).

Remarkably, the new service was not due to launch for another three weeks when lead specialist stroke nurse, Rachael Day, answered what she thought was a test call.

That call meant a rare and life-threatening brain stem stroke - fatal in up to 95 percent of cases if not treated quickly - was spotted fast and Richard's life was saved.

As month draws to a close, we are reminding people to complete and return their bowel cancer screening test when invited to do so.

Bowel cancer screening is offered every two years to all GP-registered residents aged between 50 and 74 years old.

The test detects traces of blood in your poo, which can be an early indicator of bowel cancer. Caught early, bowel cancer is highly treatable. 🙌

Watch our short video to find out more: https://orlo.uk/bowel-cancer-screening-information_gnUdC

If anyone, of any age, experiences the following symptoms for more than three weeks, please make an appointment with your GP:

💩 Blood in poo
💩 Changes in bowel habits such as diarrhoea or constipation
💩 Persistent abdominal pain
💩 Unexplained weight loss
💩 Fatigue
💩 Feeling as though you have not emptied your bowel properly

We’re pleased to share that the first patient has been recruited to the ROCkeTS GEN V2 study at Northampton General Hospital, an important milestone for our research teams.

The ROCkeTS GEN V2 study (Refining Ovarian Cancer Test Accuracy Scores) is focused on validating new risk scores to improve the early detection of ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women with suspected symptoms.

The study is now officially open at our site, with the first samples successfully processed, a great achievement and a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our teams.

Research like this plays a vital role in improving diagnosis and outcomes for patients, helping ensure people receive the right care at the right time.

If you would like further information about research opportunities, please contact the Research and Innovation Team in Area J in Northampton General Hospital, on extension 5941 or email ngh-tr.research.unit@nhs.net

Screening can help detect bowel cancer early, often before symptoms appear.

During Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we are encouraging eligible individuals to take part in bowel cancer screening when invited.

Research is helping to improve screening programmes and outcomes for patients. As part of this work, we are a research-active hospital currently recruiting patients to studies aimed at improving cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Hundreds of local patients are benefiting from a new £2.6m state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine at our hospital.

Since launching earlier this year, it has already delivered over 1,500 treatments to more than 100 patients, using advanced imaging technology to target cancer with incredible precision.

This investment means faster, more accurate treatment, helping us care for around 1,700 patients each year.

A big step forward in improving cancer care for our community.

We've had a powerful and uplifting morning at Lutterworth Pavilion for the UHN and UHL Cancer Conference, which focussed on working together to ensure people in our communities have better cancer care.

Clinical and nursing colleagues from University Hospitals of Northamptonshire and University Hospitals of Leicester, alongside NHS England partners, came together with a shared purpose: tackling health inequalities and shaping a more joined‑up cancer strategy that improves patient experience and outcomes.

Across our two counties we serve 1.8 million people through five hospitals, with around 15,000 new cancer diagnoses each year. Collectively, our cancer teams care for more than 100,000 patients every 10 days – often supporting people at their most worried and vulnerable.

The morning blended bold ambition with practical solutions, supported by our Group CEO, Richard Mitchell, and UHN Medical Director, Hemant Nemade, with a clear focus on turning insight into action. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear a number of patient stories which formed a powerful reminder that people and families are at the heart of everything we do.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising such a meaningful event, and to all cancer colleagues across UHN and UHL. Thank you for everything you do – you are truly remarkable.

Bring your unwanted bras to our Oncology department and help raise money for research into breast cancer prevention, detection and therapies. 🩷

A bra bank has been set up in Oncology reception (Area N) where you can drop off any bras in a wearable condition. These will be recycled to raise potentially life-saving funds for the charity Against Breast Cancer.

🌟 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 & 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 🌟
We are delighted to celebrate 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗮, 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲, who has won the Spotlight Research and Innovation Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹.

Darshna has consistently gone above and beyond in her role, proactively supporting research recruitment alongside her busy clinical workload. She regularly takes the time to speak with patients attending the Rapid Pathway with suspected prostate cancer, sensitively introducing the opportunity to take part in research and offering referral to a research nurse to discuss the PACIFIC trial in more detail.

Her initiative, organisation, and commitment have made a significant difference to the success of the study. She has successfully embedded research discussions into her clinics despite the additional time and workload, greatly improving our ability to identify and approach eligible patients. Her support has been instrumental in enabling patient participation in the trial.

Darshna is an absolute pleasure to work with. She brings a consistently positive, “can-do” attitude and is always willing to help. Patient feedback is consistently excellent, reflecting the compassionate and professional care she provides.

Her enthusiasm for research, combined with her dedication to patient care, makes her a truly deserving winner of this award. 👏
