A state-of-the-art laser prostate reduction operation is now being successfully delivered in the county as a day case procedure.

HOLEP, or Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat difficulties in urination caused by an enlarged prostate.

Northampton General Hospital (NGH) has just delivered its 100th operation – 15 of which were day cases - and Kettering General Hospital has now delivered its first 16 HOLEP procedures since February.

HOLEP involves using a laser to help break-up and remove excess prostate tissue enabling easier urination.

It is considered a significant advance in prostate procedures because it usually improves urination considerably, takes a short time to deliver, and patients can recover from it more quickly, and with less complications, than other common procedures.

Surgeons at the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire – which runs Northampton and Kettering general hospitals – have been working hard to fully establish and deliver the procedure across both Trusts. Northampton is the first hospital in the East Midlands to deliver the procedure as a day case.

Well done to consultant urologists Mr Aakash Pai, at NGH, and Mr Shady Nafie, at KGH, for their work on this one.

Retired heating engineer David Leggett, 74, from Northampton, had the procedure at NGH as a day case. To read about his experience go to

We are excited to share that plans have been unveiled today to build a major new Emergency Department Entrance and Urgent Treatment Centre at Northampton General Hospital.

Designs unveiled by NGH, show a central modern environment where patients needing urgent and emergency care would access the most appropriate place for their care. This would replace the Springfield Urgent Treatment Centre which opened in 2017 and porta cabin entrances to the Emergency Department, which have been in place as a temporary measure since 2023.

Today marks 80 years since VJ Day. VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, is commemorated on 15 August each year, and marks the date in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, ending the war.

We honour our Armed Forces and veterans, including those within the NHS, and remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. To all who have served and continue to serve, we thank you.

We’re proud to hold the Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award for supporting veterans and their families.

Two of our nurses and an advanced clinical practitioner have all received DAISY Awards for the outstanding care they have delivered.
Abington Ward Staff Nurse Josie Ferguson, was nominated by patient Emily who attended her presentation.

Part of her nomination reads: “Josie showed exceptional care, kindness, and compassion whilst nursing me during my long stay on Abington Ward. “

Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Oncology, Lisa Wells, was nominated by a patient’s daughter, Vanessa, who attended the award presentation remotely, after her mum was admitted to hospital with a spinal tumour.

Part of her nomination reads: “During this dark and fearful time Lisa was a guiding light, fighting our corner and ensuring mum was not discharged home without a plan in place with next steps. “

Staff Nurse in the Critical Care Unit, Solomon Jones, was nominated by patient, Dannielle, who attended the presentation.

Her nomination reads: “I had been in hospital for the majority of the last year critically ill. And every admission this nurse’s face pops up! And my god, are we glad it does.
His smile, humour and excellent rapport with all patients, his colleagues and patients’ family and friends is invaluable and a skill that is hard to find.”

Our amazing chaplain, the Rev George Sarmezey, has retired after 28 years of dedicated service and thousands of interactions with patients and staff.

George joined the hospital as its first assistant chaplain in July 1997 after working as an assistant priest in a Bristol parish for three years.

He became senior chaplain three years later and has continued in that role ever since. He has supported patients, their families, and staff through many difficult times including the years of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said: “It is a great privilege to be there for people. They share their problems, sometimes they feel upset, anxious, or even guilty about something. Speaking to a chaplain enables them to unburden themselves.”

Service improvement achievements that Rev Sarmezey has been involved in include the development of a bereavement suite at the hospital in 2008- 2009 which greatly improved the way people were supported when dealing with the death of a loved one.

He was also involved in the hospital’s Organ Donation Memorial which – after ten years of work - led to a statue being unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester near the hospital’s south entrance in October 2024.

The hospital now has two part-time chaplains, The Rev Marilyn Benjamin and Imam Enayeth Rahman, and eight chaplaincy volunteers.

George is married to Tia and has two children Georgia, 18, and Isaac, 15. He plans to spend his retirement at home with his children and he will continue to deliver services at local churches as a priest.

Thank you George for everything you have done for our patients, their families and your NGH colleagues.

Resident doctors will be taking part in strike action from 7am on Friday 25 July until 6:59am on Wednesday 30 July, which means there may be fewer doctors working in our hospitals than usual.

Our priority remains maintaining safe levels of life-critical care, especially in urgent and emergency services. There are plans in place to help minimise disruption to other services, including elective procedures and cancer services.

• Please continue to come forward for the care you need, especially in a serious or life-threatening emergency where you should dial 999
• For all other health needs, please use 111 online as the first port of call
• For more information on when to call 999 and when to go to A&E, you can visit the NHS UK website
• If you have a scheduled appointment, please attend as planned unless we contact you to reschedule. If you haven’t heard from us, your appointment will go ahead as planned
