Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes sudden and unpredictable hair loss. It is characterized by the rapid loss of hair in well-defined, round or oval patches on the scalp or other areas of the body, although in some cases it can cause diffuse loss of hair or total hair loss on the head and body. Most people with alopecia areata are healthy and have no other symptoms. Alopecia areata most commonly affects the head and face, however hair can also be lost from other areas of the body.

This condition is unpredictable and can last from six months to many years depending on the causative factors. When the hair loss covers the whole scalp it is termed alopecia totalis. When the whole body is affected it is called Alopecia universalis.

Google is a phenomenal search engine….but it is not a hair loss diagnostic tool.

Support groups and forums provide an essential service and support network ….but they are not hair loss diagnostic tools. Everyone on a forum has their own unique biological & environmental health issues, triggers, symptoms and treatment needs. Identifying with these does not mean you have the same condition/disease.

Let’s use both these resources as intended. Use google to search for a qualified Trichologist on the register of the Institute of Trichologists This will ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan or onward referral.

Accurate diagnosis leads to the correct support group/forum.

Hair loss can cause great anxiety and distress, and there are many misunderstandings about its causes and treatments, with few clinical practitioners who specialise in the hair and scalp. A Trichologists is unique in the fact that their entire specialism focuses just on the hair and scalp.

If you are worried about hair loss, we recommend having a consultation with a Trichologist. The consultation process is very thorough and may take up to an hour. During the consultation, all aspects of your scalp/hair problem will be discussed at length to determine the correct diagnosis of your condition. The Trichologist will go through your full medial history, and discuss a range of aspects of your lifestyle. This can include: your diet, family history, any stress you may be under and any medications you may be on. The Trichologist will then conduct a thorough examination of your hair and scalp, which may include the use of a scalp microscope or magnifying glass.

Did you know...?

There are five essential factors needed to establish correct diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp conditions:

1. Signs: What it looks like
2. Associated signs: Where else on the body the problem can occur
3. Symptoms: What it feels like to the patient e.g. itchy
4. Aetiology: Possible cause of disorder
5. Prognosis: Possible course or outcome of a disorder

Many types of hair loss may coexist and it is important to be aware that a patient suffering from one type of hair loss may also suffer from other disorders, which may exacerbate the condition.

Seeing a specialist is key to effective treatment

Problems of the scalp can range from dandruff to more inflammatory conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. There are a number of factors such as stress, diet, allergies, family inheritance and medications that can lead to scalp problems and a Trichologist will help identify the triggers and causes to provide holistic advice to you.
