A lovely Wednesday had at Kitwood House.

We started our day with Ian from Music in Mind.
Ian had us all singing, whistling and clapping along to the beat.

We had a dance to some rock and roll and we had some solo singing and duets going on, he dueted David Cassidy’s Daydreamer, Jonny Cashes - Ring of Fire and The Beetles - When I’m 64 with 3 of our residents and one resident gave us a whistling solo.

It was a morning full of laughter and joy.

The sensory smell activity that we did yesterday went so well that we decided to carry it on today.

We got all the fresh fruits that we tried the scents of yesterday and did a tasting panel. Our residents enjoyed trying all the sweet fresh fruits and said they had no winner, they enjoyed them all.

This Afternoon we enjoyed a nice beer or two at our gentleman’s club.

Our gentleman’s club is a place to come and have a natter with friends whilst enjoying a drink or two and not forgetting a bag of pork scratchings.

We have had a wonderful sports therapy session this afternoon with Aiofa from Rise Sports.

Aiofa worked on hand eye co-ordination and balance.
Our residents played chair tennis with balloons and pool noodles, batting the balloons to each other.

On Northern Belle we did a group session, kicking the football into the net, and also playing catch. Residents love to take part in this activity and we have lots shouting, laughing and fun. The session creates a very lively atmosphere and builds confidence for those taking part.

While doing some one-to-one sessions today, we had a great moment with one of our ladies who is making small signs of progress every week. We are getting more eye contact from her, she also is trying to communicate, and is using her arms more. It’s so wonderful to see.

This morning our Wellbeing team set up the Jolly Trolley as a mobile sensory activity, and we focused on the sense of smell.

Smells can bring back lovely memories and our residents loved this activity. It was all about different fruits today. One resident said the coconut smell reminded her of drinking cocktails sat on the beach.
Another said she used to collect wind fall apples then take them home so her and her mum would bake pies and have them after tea.

Sensory stimulates and can bring back little memories in time and that can associated with comfort and improve mood.

Over the weekend Mel from the Wellbeing team gave residents a choice of activities.

On Northern Belle it was a karaoke disco and dancing with music from the Jolly Trolley. On Queen Mary and Flying Scotsman it was card games, reading and dominoes and on Queen Elizabeth there was one-one sessions with the Tover - our interactive light sensory projector and a lot of chatting.

What a fabulous weekend it as been. Great work Mel.

At Kitwood House we use the Whole Home Approach when it comes to activities and tonight our dedicated care team on Queen Mary did just that.
One of our gentlemen fancied a game of cards and asked if we had any, nurse Robyn found a deck and got the game started.

As the rain poured he enjoyed a cup of hot coffee and the conversation flowed as he played rounds of Snap and Pairs with our care team.

A wonderful meaningful activity for this gentleman well done Queen Mary.

This afternoon we had an afternoon of singing and dancing with the fabulous Eddy and Lucy.

Eddy plays some fantastic songs on the keyboard and we all sing along and dance along, today we tied a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree whilst waving yellow ribbons above our heads, and played the castanets to the Copacabana.

Everyone was laughing and singing what a truly joyous afternoon.

This afternoon the Jolly Trolley Treat Shop did its rounds.

Everyone tucked into delicious chocolate and vanilla donuts whilst watching Downton Abbey, The Rugby and Tenable, washed down with a hot creamy coffee what more could you ask for.
