🌹 St George’s Day at Birches 🌹

Today is St George’s Day—a moment to reflect on England’s heritage and the sense of community that brings us together.

The rose, England’s national emblem, has long been linked with this day. Here at Birches, our rose garden is just beginning to come into bloom, offering a simple but meaningful nod to that tradition 🌿🌹

With spring well underway, the gardens are full of fresh colour and new life—providing a peaceful space to pause, reflect, and remember.

Whether you’re visiting for a service or simply spending a little time in the grounds, you’re always very welcome.

Wishing everyone a calm and meaningful St George’s Day ❤️

Spring has arrived, bringing a gentle sense of renewal to the garden here Birches (even if it is very windy today!)

As the days grow longer and the first blossoms begin to open, the garden becomes a peaceful place for reflection, remembrance, and quiet moments. Daffodils, tulips, and early flowering shrubs are starting to bring colour back into the landscape, providing some comfort after the long winter.

It’s also a time of care and preparation in the garden. If you’re tending to your own outdoor space, here are a few mindful jobs to consider this season:

Gently clear away fallen leaves and winter debris to let new growth shine through.

Plant spring and early summer flowers for lasting colour and as a gift to future you.

Keep on top of weeds before they spread - now is the best time to do it!

Sow seeds for summer displays - our top choices for easy wins are Nasturtiums, Cosmos and Cerinthe!

Taking time to nurture a garden—no matter how small—can be a meaningful way to connect with nature and reflect on cherished memories.

We welcome visitors to spend a quiet moment in the garden as it comes back to life this Spring.

If you have had a walk around the garden recently you may have noticed these piles of colourful twigs. On a 1-5 year rotation we Pollard or coppice the trees and shrubs we grow for winter colour and interest.

Pollarding is a traditional tree management practice that involves carefully pruning the upper branches of a tree to encourage healthy new growth. While it may look dramatic at first, this method has been used for centuries to keep trees strong, safe and provide material to make plant frames or other building materials.

One of the key benefits of pollarding is tree health and longevity. By periodically removing older branches, the tree is encouraged to produce fresh, vigorous shoots, which gives the bright colour that can lift the dull days in winter.

Another important advantage is sustainability. Regular pollarding can extend the life of a tree rather than requiring removal, preserving green spaces and wildlife habitats. The process also produces smaller, reusable wood that we use around the garden as plant supports, fencing areas or simply creating beautiful displays, even creating woven piles to make homes for all kinds of creatures that keep our garden healthy!

When carried out correctly and at the appropriate times of year, pollarding is a thoughtful way to manage trees, so that they can provide garden interest for years to come.
