“I wouldn’t even know what to say in therapy…”

If you’ve ever thought that, you’re not alone.

A lot of people delay counselling because they feel:

Too overwhelmed to put things into words
Unsure what’s actually “wrong”
Worried their problems aren’t serious enough
Afraid of being judged or misunderstood

But here’s the thing…

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start.

Therapy isn’t about arriving with a clear explanation.
It’s about figuring things out as you go.

Even saying something as simple as
“I’m not really sure why I’m here”
is more than enough.

And if there are moments of silence?
That’s okay too. They’re part of the process—not something you need to avoid.

Over time, things usually start to shift:
✔ Thoughts feel less tangled
✔ Emotions become easier to understand
✔ You begin to notice patterns in how you think and feel

It doesn’t happen all at once.
It starts small—with just showing up.

If you’ve been thinking about counselling but feel unsure, you’re welcome to reach out for a chat.

No pressure. No need to prepare. Just a place to start.

Sometimes it doesn’t look like a problem on the surface.

It sounds more like:
“I’m fine.”
“It’s not a big deal.”

But underneath, there can be something heavier—feeling stuck, blaming yourself, pushing people away while quietly wanting them closer.

If that feels familiar, you’re not alone.

I’ve written a piece about this pattern—why it happens, and how it can begin to shift, gently and at your own pace.

If it resonates with you, you’re very welcome to have a read 💬

And if you’ve been thinking about reaching out for support, you’re welcome to take that first step when it feels right.

Warmest wishes,

If you feel stuck, push people away, or quietly doubt your worth, you're not alone. This piece explores why and how things can begin to shift.

Sometimes the hardest thing to say is a simple “no.”

Not because you don’t know your limits… but because you care. You don’t want to disappoint people. You don’t want to feel like you’re letting anyone down.

So you say yes.
And then quietly carry the stress, the overwhelm, and the exhaustion that follows.

But here’s something to hold onto:

You are allowed to have boundaries.
You are allowed to protect your energy.
You are allowed to choose yourself too.

Saying no doesn’t make you a bad person—it makes you an honest one.

If this is something you’re struggling with right now, you’re not alone 💛

And if you need support, Shaw Life Counselling & Training is here to help.

You’re Not Overthinking… You Were Conditioned That Way.

Ever feel like your mind just won’t switch off?

Replaying conversations.
Doubting yourself.
Trying to keep everyone happy.

Overthinking isn’t simply “who you are.”
Often, it’s something you learned.

For many of us, childhood taught us to:
✨ Earn love
✨ Stay quiet
✨ Avoid conflict
✨ Be “good” to feel safe

But those patterns don’t disappear when we grow up.

They can show up in adulthood as:
• Anxiety
• People-pleasing
• Fear of rejection
• Feeling like you’re never enough

Here’s the part most people don’t hear:

💛 There is nothing wrong with you.

You adapted in the best way you could to feel safe.

The challenge is that those survival patterns can keep you stuck.

But the moment you start to notice them, you can begin to change them.

And that’s when things start to shift.

If this resonates with you, reach out.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.

I came across this article on self-esteem myths and it really resonated with me.

So many of these beliefs can keep us feeling stuck or “not enough,” and I often see this in the counselling room.

What stood out most is the reminder that self-worth isn’t something we have to earn or fix — it’s something we can gently reconnect with.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to work through it on your own. If you’d like support exploring this, feel free to reach out 💬

You don’t have to be falling apart to need support.
Sometimes burnout shows up quietly — feeling tired all the time, losing motivation, or struggling to switch off, even though life looks “fine” from the outside.
I support people who are used to coping, but are ready for things to feel a bit easier.

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week — and many of the teenagers I’ve worked with over the years come to mind. So many young people are thoughtful, capable, and emotionally aware, yet live with constant self-doubt, anxiety, or a harsh inner critic that leaves them feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from themselves.

Before becoming a counsellor, my work began in education as a lecturer, learning mentor, and pastoral practitioner. I saw that many young people weren’t struggling because they lacked ability or motivation, but because they didn’t feel emotionally safe or trusting of themselves. When safety came first, engagement and learning often followed.

Now, with over 3,000 clinical hours, my work with teenagers is trauma-informed and relational. Therapy isn’t about fixing who they are — it’s about slowing things down, settling the nervous system, and creating a space where they feel genuinely heard.

During Children’s Mental Health Week, it feels important to remember that support doesn’t need to wait for a crisis. If a young person is coping on the outside but struggling inside, even a quiet conversation can be a place to start.
