Ahead of ***dePreventionDay tomorrow, I’d like to highlight a fantastic mental health service which I volunteer for.

If you or anyone you know needs help, Shout are there 24/7 for free, confidential support. They provide a safe place for people to open up without judgement.

Or if you’d like to know more about how to help someone who is feeling suicidal, you can sign up to attend their webinar tomorrow.

Take care.

Join us on ***dePreventionDay, Tuesday 10 September at 12pm to learn how you can support someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts.

The theme of World Su***de Prevention Day this year is ‘Changing the narrative around su***de’, so we’re going to set about changing the part of the old narrative that says su***de shouldn’t be talked about. Because talking about su***de is how we help prevent it.

I just saw this quote by Charlie Mackesy and it really resonated with me.

In my therapy sessions, I often hear “I want to be less anxious/scared/overweight”, and I’ll help my clients to build a mental picture of what their life would look like in that scenario.

It’s much easier to formulate a plan and figure out those tiny first steps, if you know what you’re working TOWARDS, rather than just what you want to get AWAY from.

If you were less afraid, less anxious, what would you be MORE of instead? What would your friends or family notice? What would it allow you to do differently?

We all know the notion of “sleep on it”, or “you’ll feel better after a good night’s sleep”. But have you ever thought about WHY sleep seems to magically cure (at least some of) our problems?!

During sleep, in particular the rapid eye movement (REM) stages, our brains process the events of our waking life and attempt to make sense of them.
In a very clever and complicated matchmaking process, your brain searches back through previous life experiences where you might have been in a similar situation, even ones you may not consciously remember, and plays scenarios out in your mind - sometimes exactly as they happened, or often through metaphor - a.k.a. dreams. Have you ever dreamt about someone from your past who hasn’t even crossed your mind in years? It’s likely that whatever you’re currently going through in life has triggered a subconscious memory linked to that person. It’s your brain in problem solving mode - what did we do last time we felt like this? How can we use that to help us now?

This inner rehearsal allows us to come up with solutions to problems and to process emotional events. Say you’ve had an argument with a loved one - you go to bed and the next day you’re feeling much calmer about it and ready to move on. You haven’t forgotten the argument itself but it’s changed from an emotional memory to a narrative.

So you can see why it’s crucial to prioritise getting a good night’s sleep. Not only does it help us physically, it also aids emotional recovery and problem solving.

Sweet dreams!

1,2,3 you’re back in the room!*

I’m so excited to announce that from September, I’ll be back doing face to face sessions at the beautiful in Lymm.

Online sessions have been great, and I’m happy to continue them for people who can’t get to the clinic, but I’m so looking forward to meeting my clients in person again!

*I promise I never actually say this in my sessions 🙈

This advice could apply to children and adults alike.

When we’re in a highly emotional state, our brains go into fight or flight survival mode, and the areas of our brain responsible for rational, intellectual thinking shut down. This explains why it can be difficult to put how we’re feeling into words, or why we might lash out and react in anger.

It’s all part of our brain’s inbuilt defence mechanism, but once you understand what’s going on, it allows you to change how you respond and manage it more effectively.

Great advice from Stephanie Pinto 💓

Mother’s Day is one of those bittersweet days in the calendar. For those of us fortunate enough to be close to our children and/or our mothers, it’s a day to celebrate but for so many it can be a painful reminder of a love that’s no longer here in person, or one that sadly never existed in the first place.

Wherever you are on this spectrum, I hope at the very least you can show love & kindness to yourself today. And every day for that matter.

❤️

I hope today is kind to you 🤍

My kids amaze me sometimes with their insight.

My 3 year old went from stabilisers to this in a couple of days and while she’s cycling she sings “if I try, I can do it”, then when she stops she shouts “I smashed it!” She’s unreservedly proud of herself and it’s beautiful and inspiring to see.

It got me thinking that we could all do with being our own cheerleaders more!

What have you done recently that deserves some self-praise?
