Disability Positive

Disability Positive We are Disability Positive. We help people with disability and long-term health conditions to live well. We provide you with services, opportunities and a voice.

We are a charity based in Cheshire and work mostly in the North West. The social model of disability is the starting point for everything we do and is the idea that people are not disabled by their condition, but by a world that doesn’t meet their needs. We have services to help you with everyday life, being part of your local community and looking after your wellbeing. We can offer advice, help w

ith practical tasks and advocate for you in lots of situations. We listen and share your experiences to influence positive change in government policy. We know it matters, because we live with disability and long-term health conditions too. Visit www.disabilitypositive.org to find out more.

It’s - a time to remind ourselves that what we feel isn’t always the full picture.

For many people, mental health challenges can make it hard to see a way forward. But even in those moments, support, understanding and connection can make a difference.

You’re not alone - and there is always hope, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

What helps you hold onto hope during difficult times?

Communication should be accessible for everyone, but small barriers can make a big difference.

This week, we’re sharing some simple ways to support communication with people who are D/deaf or hard of hearing. Everyday interaction can be made easier by how we speak, the environments we create and small changes.

Inclusion isn’t just about being aware; it’s about taking action to be more inclusive and accessible.

What helps you feel more included in conversations? 💬

It’s Deaf Awareness Week. 👂💜

But do you actually know what this sign means?

This symbol indicates that a hearing loop system is available, which sends sound directly to hearing aids or cochlear implants via a ‘T’ setting. This helps block out background noise and makes it easier to hear clearly.

It’s often found in places like shops, reception desks, theatres and public buildings - but many people don’t realise what it’s there for.

Small things like this can make a big difference to everyday access. Did you know what this symbol meant?

FAQ: What is a Direct Payment?

If you’ve ever felt unsure about how care and support are arranged, you’re not alone.

A Direct Payment gives you more choice and control over your support, helping you decide what works best for your life, your routine and your needs. When this funding comes from the NHS, it is often referred to as a Personal Health Budget.

It can be used in a variety of ways - from employing a Personal Assistant to accessing services and activities that support your wellbeing.

Understanding your options is the first step towards greater independence.

A simple trip to the supermarket isn’t always simple for everyone.

From crowded aisles and bright lighting to noise, layout and accessibility, there can be a range of barriers - not just physical, but sensory and environmental too.

For some people, these challenges can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming or even unmanageable.

Creating inclusive spaces means thinking beyond the basics and considering how environments feel, not just how they look.

We’d love to hear from you: what barriers have you experienced in supermarkets - and what would make the biggest difference? Tell us in the comments. 💬

The Social Model of Disability shifts the focus away from the individual and onto the world around them. It challenges everyone to think about how environments, systems and attitudes can exclude - and what we can do to change that.

When barriers are removed, people can access opportunities, live independently, and thrive.

At Disability Positive, this approach is at the heart of everything we do; from the services we provide to the way we advocate for change.
