Vale Royal Chiropractic Clinic

Vale Royal Chiropractic Clinic We have been established in Northwich since 1998. We offer a friendly, professional and caring service to the local community and beyond.

Chiropractors are trained to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints and muscles). We use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve muscle function and increase mobility. We offer a complimentary assessment which includes a full history and physical examination which involves postural assessment, orthopaedic, neurological and muscle tests. Providing there are no contra indications to chiropractic care then treatment can usually begin immediately. We are registered with the General Chiropractic Council and are members of the British Chiropractic Association.

I often observe patients breathing with shallow rapid breaths during their chiropractic examination.
Long term shallow breathing can create muscle tension leading to headaches and neck pain.
Of course the reverse is also true, muscle tension, headaches and neck pain can lead to shallow breathing due to the decreased functional mobility of the upper back and ribs.

Try out the following breathing exercise

1. Sit or lie in a comfortable place. Close your eyes.
2. Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your abdomen. The bottom hand should do the moving. The top hand should remain still or only move as the bottom hand moves.
3. Inhale through your nose for about 4 seconds, feeling your abdomen expand (you may feel slight tension the first few times you inhale).
4. Hold your breath for 2 seconds.
5. Exhale very slowly and steadily through your mouth for about 6 seconds. The mouth should be relaxed.
6. Repeat for 5 - 15 minutes.

When first learning diaphragmatic breathing, it is common to feel some uneasiness or lightheaded. Quicken your breath if you feel lightheaded. After a session of diaphragmatic breathing, allow yourself time to adjust to your surroundings - do not stand up to quickly.

Diaphragmatic breathing is an excellent tool for relaxation but it is a skill that requires practice. With practice it becomes easier over time and eventually can be done with eyes open, while sitting or even walking or driving

As an avid walker, one of my favourite quotes is "walking is man's best medicine" by Hippocrates.

Walking 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat and improve muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.

As we come into the autumn and winter months the cold, wet weather can put some of us off from venturing outside and of course, not everybody is able to or enjoys walking.

We don't have to get outside to move.
We can walk, cycle, jog or row on the spot, exercise in our living rooms, we can move our bodies standing, sitting or lying down.

The Key is to move our joints and muscles regularly throughout the day.

Remember movement is key!
