What is Mctimoney?
McTimoney is a non-invasive, holistic therapy which focuses on the correct functioning of the nervous system. It was originally developed by the late John McTimoney in the 1950’s for use on humans and was later adapted for the treatment of animals. The practitioner uses only their hands making quick but gentle adjustments on any misalignment's they find through palpation.
The central nervous system is encased within the skull and spinal column with peripheral nerves exiting between each vertebra and existing throughout the rest of the body. This includes innervation of the skin, muscles, tissues and joints producing voluntary movement as well as controlling involuntary function such as heart rate and digestion. Due to the wide involvement of the nervous system it is important that it is kept functioning correctly with impairment or damage affecting the entire body and in some cases causing disease.
A misalignment occurs when a vertebrae is not in alignment with those either side of it which has become fixed within its natural range of motion. This may cause compression of a nerve impairing impulses and affecting the entire body. A Misalignment, often accompanied by muscle spasms, can restrict the range of movement in a particular region of the spine causing your animal to become stiff and sore in that area.
They can be caused by acute traumas such as an accident or fall but can also be associated with more long term issues. These include compensation from an old injury or conformational aspects as well as, with horses, issues related to being ridden such as poorly fitting tack or imbalances from the rider. There are a number of signs to look out for in a horse, which may indicate the presence of misalignment's, those most commonly seen are,
. Unlevelness (particularly behind)
Uneven wear of shoes
Unexplained deterioration in usual performance
Uncharacteristic resistance (e.g. Bucking, rearing, napping)
Changes in behaviour or temperament (e.g. Reluctance towards tacking up or mounting)
Uneven muscle development
Asymmetry (stiffness on one rein)
Unusual reluctance to jump
Consistent strike off on the incorrect canter lead
Canine
Dogs that are in work or training for a competition will be putting demands on their musculoskeletal system. Even those kept as pets may trip or knock themselves when out for a walk which may cause misalignment. common signs to look out for which may benefit from a Mctimoney session are,
. Difficulty climbing stairs
Difficulty jumping in and out of the car
Uneven movement
Signs of discomfort when being stroked over their back
Uncharacteristic reluctance to exercise
Reduced athletic performance
Stiffness or pain following exercise
Difficulty getting up following rest
