This week’s Q&A Friday looks at Cerebral Palsy and whether it can affect a person’s ability to talk.

As today’s post shows, speech can be affected for some people, while others may not experience any speech difficulties at all - it really depends on how muscle control and coordination are impacted for each individual.

For more information and support, visit our Cerebral Palsy page:

If you have a question you’d like us to answer in a future Q&A Friday, pop it in the comments or send us a message - we’d love to hear from you.

Last week we took part in fire warden training and we’re now all trained up 🧯🔥
Lots of hands-on practice, a few brave first volunteers, and some great action shots along the way!

Keeping everyone safe in our clinics is always a priority, and it’s good to know we’re prepared if we ever need to act.

Welcome to Q&A Fridays 🧡💙
Each Friday, we’ll be answering a commonly asked question about speech and language therapy, based on the questions we hear most from families.

We’re starting with stammering and cluttering, two fluency difficulties that often raise lots of questions for parents and individuals.

If you’d like to learn more about stammering, including signs, features, and how speech and language therapy can help, you can visit our stammering page:

Stuttering and cluttering are both speech fluency difficulties, but they can sound and feel very different.

Stuttering (also known as stammering) affects the flow of speech and may involve repetitions, prolongations, or blocks, where speech feels stuck. Many children who stammer are aware of their speech and this can have an emotional impact.

Cluttering is often associated with very rapid or disorganised speech and reduced awareness of how speech sounds to others, with more impact on the listener.

Understanding these differences is an important first step in knowing what type of support may be helpful.

Ever heard the phrase “they’ll grow out of it” when it comes to speech difficulties?

While some children do develop at different rates, ongoing speech and language difficulties don’t always resolve on their own.

Challenges with speech, language, or communication can affect a child’s confidence, learning, and social interactions. Early support can make a meaningful difference by helping children build skills and feel more confident communicating in everyday situations.

Wondering what happens during a speech and language assessment at ISLTS?

Our assessments are child-centred and designed to help us understand your child’s communication strengths and needs.

We gather background information, observe communication, and use appropriate assessment tools to guide the next steps. After the assessment, we talk through the findings with you so you feel clear and supported.

Selective mutism is an anxiety-based communication difficulty where a child can speak in comfortable, familiar settings (like at home) but finds it very hard to speak in other situations or with certain people. It isn’t a lack of ability - it’s linked to intense fear or anxiety around speaking in specific contexts.

At ISLTS, our speech and language therapists work with families and schools to build confidence through gentle, personalised support, helping children take small steps towards using their voice more freely across settings.

Creating an inclusive workplace starts with understanding how people think, communicate and experience their environment differently. Our Employee Neurodiversity Awareness Training supports teams to build knowledge, challenge assumptions and develop practical strategies that make day-to-day work more accessible and supportive.

By improving awareness, organisations can create environments where neurodivergent employees feel understood, valued and able to thrive.

A festive twist on our Lego Therapy session this week! 🎄🧱
We focused on writing down key words to help the children better understand and process the Lego instructions and descriptions.

This simple strategy doesn’t just support the session - it’s also a great classroom tool, helping students recall and follow instructions more independently. Learning, teamwork and a little Christmas creativity all in one!

Festive lights, decorations, music and smells can be part of the magic of Christmas — but for many people, they can also feel overwhelming. Sensory overload can have a real impact on communication, comfort and wellbeing during the festive season.

Small changes, like softer lighting or quieter spaces, can make Christmas feel calmer and more inclusive for everyone. 💛
