Good morning all !

Are you an assistive technology user ? If so we'd like to ask for your help and feedback.

We've been contacted by Norwich City Council, who are in the process of planning a redesign of the council website. The redesign will take pace over the next couple of years, because as you can appreciate - it's a big website with a great deal of content.

One of the big issues with the current website is accessibility, in particular for those of us with sight impairments, but this isn't the only accessibility need that a good website needs to take into consideration. Users of other features like sticky keys or those with restricted hand dexterity need to be accommodated too.

We've been asked if any of our followers or members would like to give some initial feedback one of the accessibility solutions the team are considering for the redesigned website. It is a standalone accessibility widget called ReciteMe.

It's currently available on the Kings Lynn and West Norfolk website. The website link is at the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk Homepage - www.west-norfolk.gov.uk

What ReciteMe are telling the team is that as the toolbar is not auto-launched it has been designed to not impede other assistive technology that the website visitor already uses.

So the team would love to hear feedback, particularly from those of you who already use your own accessibility features on your device. They'd like to know if the ReciteMe toolbar clashes with your features in any way - does it make a mess of your built in accommodations when it's launched, or not ? Do you find it easy to launch with your screen reader, for example ? What other thoughts do you have about the ReciteMe widget ?

Our contact is Jason Kittle, and his email address is JasonKittle@norwich.gov.uk You can send feedback either directly to him, or to us at in@inclusivenorwich.org.uk and we'll pass it on.

If you have any further questions about the testing of the widget please email Jason directly.

Many thanks for your time and effort if you're able to help the team.

Are you an artist with a disability ? If so read on !

We've been sent the information for the following exciting opportunity.

"I’m getting in touch with an exciting opportunity as we have partnered with the disabled-led arts organisation Unlimited to deliver one of their UK partnership awards. The award of £15,000 will be awarded to an East-Anglian based disabled artist and will be used towards developing a new project with the festival from June 2025 – May 2026. I was wondering if you would be interested in sharing the opportunity with any of your relevant contacts who might be interested in applying.

I have pasted the link to our specific award below this line, and I’m happy to chat this opportunity further with you if that would be helpful.

Despite our Vice Chair being misquoted we're pleased to read that there may be safety improvements to a local roundabout that is clearly unsafe for vulnerable pedestrians, particularly those with sight loss.

But the works come only weeks after the new traffic arrangements were completed, causing many to ask why they weren't actioned during the initial stages of construction.

Further roadworks have been announced for the Heartsease Fiveways roundabout in Norwich which has only just reopened after a seven-month project.

Incredibly sad news for visually impaired Apple users. AppleVis, the foremost resource for accessibility for Apple users, is to close.

Dear AppleVis Community, It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that after careful consideration I have made the difficult decision to step down from my responsibilities with AppleVis. As a direct result of my departure and following extensive deliberation, the editorial team has come to the pain...

"My Four Wheeled Friends".

I use a wheelchair all the time. And scooters when I’m going further. These are my four-wheeled friends, and without them I couldn’t do everything I do with my human (and animal) friends.

Vehicles parked on pavements are a safety issue for many, but for disabled people and those with young children they're especially dangerous. Pavement parking forces us into the road, and can stop people with disabilities who need unobstructed access to pavements from being able to get around.

Will you add your name to Living Street's greeting card to the new Transport Secretary and ask the government to end pavement parking ?

It's time for change, let's put an end to pavement parking. Living Streets are calling on the new UK Government to provide safe walking routes to school, with an urgent end to pavement parking. Add your name to our greeting card for the new Transport Secretary today.
