Lovely writing by Lucy Webber about night feeds

It's 2am. You are 4 weeks old.
Time seems to be standing still.
Every time I put you down, you wake up and root for more. I worry that I'm getting it wrong. That you're not getting enough. That I should be putting you down. I'm exhausted. I'm not sure I can do this.

It's 3am. You are 3 months old.
Sometimes I feel like I'm getting the hang of this. Other times I doubt myself so deeply I wonder if I should have been a mother.
This is harder than I ever imagined.

It's 4am. You are 5 months old.
I listen to your gentle gulping and feel your heavy body next to mine.
I'm tired, but relaxed. I know this won't be forever so I try to soak it up while I can.
Your body softens, my eyes close and we both drift off.

It's 5am. You're 10 months old.
I'm feeding you in the hope you'll stay asleep just a little longer. You're wriggly. You smell good.
How can one small person take up so much room.
We doze a little more.

It's 6am. You're 18 months old.
I wake up and you're feeding, having helped yourself again. I kiss your little head and we snuggle for a while.

It's 7am. You're 2 years old.
You toddle into my room and clamber onto my bed.
In between sucks you tell me all about your teddies, and the airplane you just heard.
The milky tastes good today, you say.

It's 8am. You're 3 and a half.
Today was the first day you didn't have a morning feed. Is this the beginning of the end? I don't know if I'm ready.

It's 9am. You're 4.
We eat breakfast together. You haven't fed now for a couple of weeks. At least I think it's a couple of weeks, it happened so gradually I don't really know.
I'm so proud of you. Of us.

You finish your breakfast. We cuddle some more.

Checking for a tongue tie is about SO much more than how the tongue and frenulum look.

This Friday we will be doing something a little different - we will be joining .doula.norfolk and .with.amber for their Little Yogis Teddy Bear Picnic at Waterloo Park.

The event is totally free. We will be there providing our usual non-judgemental evidence based support, come along and see us! And if you've been feeling nervous about feeding in public, now is the perfect time to come give it a go!

Please note that we will not be at our usual venue on Friday as we will be here!

Silver ni**le cups. Sometimes called silver ni**le shields (not to be confused with the silicon ni**le shields that can help a bottle fed baby latch, you wont get much milk out of a silver ni**le shield as there are no holes!)

So what are they designed for?
The answer is to aide healing when you have damaged ni**les from breastfeeding.

Now I am an evidenced based account and there is actually no research into how effective these gizmos are. It is true that silver has been used for healing for a very long time. But us in the lactation world have also seen a worrying side effect which is important to discuss before you shell out your hard earned cash.

The risk of using these, and especially if you leak, is that the ni**le sits in a pool of milk for an hour or two at a time. Just like when we have been in a long luxurious bath for over an hour (remember those times when you could do that?), when we get out our skin has absorbed water, it looks a bit soggy and wrinkly and more importantly, it is more sensitive and easier to damage! I have seen this with ni**les where a silver ni**le cup has been used a lot in between feeds. The skin is macerated, is sore and easier to damage. In one recent case the ni**les actually looked grey and soggy. Like they were developing trench foot.

Pros and cons of using silver ni**le caps

Pros
Silver possibly aides healing
Stops ni**les rubbing on clothing

Cons
Can cause skin to macerate which makes it more easily damaged
They are expensive
They won't treat the cause of the sore ni**les, make sure to seek breastfeeding support to work out what is going on.

So, yes some people love them. But do use with caution and for short periods, especially if you leak a lot.
