Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and manual treatment which is recognised by the British Medical Association. In 1993, osteopathy became the first complementary health care profession to be given statutory recognition, giving patients the same safeguards they have when they consult a doctor or dentist. Osteopathy focuses on hands-on manipulation of the body’s musculo-skeletal syste

m in order to treat a wide variety of ailments. It helps restore mobility and significantly improves the quality of life for many people without the use of drugs or surgery. We're situated in Norwich City Centre in partnership with Thai Herbal Retreat (http://www.thaiherbalretreat.co.uk/). Visiting us is easy with Pay & Display street parking just outside the building, we're also within easy reach of Castle Mall & St-Stephen car park. Please note that an osteopath must study for four to five years for an undergraduate degree. This is similar to a medical degree, with more emphasis on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine and includes more than 1,000 hours of clinical training in osteopathy. By law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath if they are not registered. We are fully insured and registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), the British Osteopathic Assoiation (BOA) and a member of Back Care, a registered charity for people with back pain. We are also registered with multiple private insurance companies (please check).

People with hypermobility form the majority of the patients we see on a regular basis. Many don't know they have it, they have just learned to live with constant pain.
Can you spare a couple of minutes to help improve NHS services?

There is a nationally commissioned NHS diagnostic service for rare types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome but there is no dedicated funding for the diagnosis/treatment of the most common type (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD). We believe this should change.

We are staying open!

As allied health professionals, registered Osteopaths are classified as healthcare practitioners and we are being actively encouraged to stay open to keep providing essential services throughout this second national lockdown.

According to legislations, leaving your house to attend an appointment with us falls under the "attending a medical appointment" category, so you can visit us with complete peace of mind that we are all operating within the government's guidance.

This lockdown is completely different form the first one: we know exactly what we are dealing with, protocols are already in place and most importantly, there is no shortage of PPE!

We have rigorous infection control procedures in place here at Body Flow Osteopathy, including thorough decontamination of the treatment room and communal area in between patients, along with the wearing of full PPE by our practitioners and the use of powerful air purifiers in our treatment room. This means that the risk of transmission on our premises is very low.

So if you need an appointment, get in touch with us!

Help us to help you:

We are currently experiencing a high volume of Covid related cancellations, so if you would like an appointment earlier than what is showing as available on our online system, please email us at: Reception(at)BodyFlowOsteo.com with your name, phone number and when you would be available to attend an appointment and we will contact you with suitable cancellations.

Proactively running a cancellation list is one of the ways by which we can maintain financial viability in the current climate without increasing cost to you, whilst continuing to operate a no-fee late cancellation for Covid-related reasons which helps to keep us all safe.

To date, we have been able to offer an appointment to most on our wait list within a week. So if you need an appointment, or know someone who does, please send them our way!

We Are Open For Appointments Again!

Although It's Not Quite "Business As Usual"...

We may be looking like space bakers in our masks, apron, and eye covers and you may just catch us emerging from a misty cloud of surface sanitizer, but fear not! We're still the same friendly osteopaths (turned part-time cleaners) underneath all that PPE, and we've been missing you!

We know from population surveys that muscle-skeletal pain has increased during lockdown from being less active, working from home in awkward positions, and key workers working extra hard so it's time for us to get back to work and help sort out all those "lock down neck pains" and other ailments!

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a huge amount of disturbance and anxiety in every corner of the population, and we share this feeling.

However, the rapidly growing body of evidence on the SARS-CoV-2 virus (which causes Covid-19) is making it easier to make effective decisions to reduce the risk of transmission whilst supporting the return to some sort of normality. Rest assured that this scientific knowledge underlines all of our decisions and we take everyone's safety very seriously.

We are confident that our environment is as safe as it can be, although nowhere can guarantee to be 100% safe, viruses being very inconveniently invisible.
But our premises are small, easy to clean and benefit from very small footfall giving us ultimate control over our environment and the utmost confidence that we can keep our practitioners and you, our lovely client safe.

We've even made you a little video :)

If you'd like to know all of the extra safety precautions we are taking, we have published everything on our website under the Covid-19 tab.

So if you need us, we're here!

So nice to be given a shout out! What they didn't say is that at the start of the pandemic, so many osteopaths volunteered to join the NHS in the Covid efforts (I was one of thousands), that they had to modify the forms to add Osteopath on the tick box list. We were noted as a profession for our willingness to help.

As allied health professionals colleagues, we kept offering emergency appointments and remote support through the pandemic to reduce the amount of hospital admission for musculoskeletal pain, and many nurses, doctors and other key workers were seen in Osteopathic practices around the country, contributing to the global efforts to get through the public health crises.

Osteopathy is not just for people!
Joelle has done most of her animal Osteopathy training with Tony so it's very nice to see him and Osteopathy in action with this baby Cheeta!

It's here! Our Virtual Clinic is all ready to go :)
After closing our virtual doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now all set up to do virtual appointments!

How does it work?

Virtual Appointments will take place online at a place of your choosing.

You will need access to a camera phone or a laptop with a we**am.

We recommend that you carry out the appointment in a well-lit, quiet and private room in a locations where you will be able to talk with your practitioner uninterrupted and have enough space to perform a few basic movement for examination purposes.

The format of the consultation will reflect one that would take place face-to-face:

Does it work?

We are strong believers in remedial exercises and in empower recovery through information and self-help strategies.

Information is power and after looking at the research evidence supporting remote appointments, we were sold!

Yes, virtual appointments will be different from face to face ones but we are confident that they won't be any less useful.

Research clearly shows that understanding what is causing your pain and feeling empowered about how you can improve those symptoms yourself has a significant and positive impact on pain levels.

We fully acknowledge that virtual appointments have limitations and they will not be best suited for everyone.
If we feel that virtual appointments will not be suitable for you, we will consider offer an emergency face to face appointment.

Please visit our website for full details:
http://www.bodyflowosteopathy.com/virtual-clinic.html

You can also book online:
https://bodyflowosteo.cliniko.com/bookings?business_id=89950&practitioner_id=12703

If you have seen us before, feel free to drop us an email. We will continue with our regular email support as always!

Thank you for your ongoing support at this different time.

**Clinic Closure Notice**

Last week was a tough week for most of us and we didn't escape it either.
It's hard to comprehend how much life has changed in just 7 days.
7 short days that somehow feel like a lifetime...

Last weekend, after much soul searching, deliberations and anguish over "What's best to do" we decided to close the clinic to face to face appointments, from Monday the 23rd March 2020 until further notice.

Many factors made it a difficult decision to take.
At that time, lockdown had not yet been announced.
The General Osteopathic Council had yet to issue clear guidance to Osteopaths.
Allied health professionals (which includes Osteopaths), were being encouraged to keep trading to relieve pressure on the NHS.
We know in our heart of hearts that what we do is supportive to health in all it's manifestation: cellular health, individual, familial, societal and a great contribution to public health.
We took early decisive actions to make visiting us as safe as can be, and most definitely safer than going to the supermarket.
At that time, no financial support was being offered to the self-employed (Thank you Rishi!)

Yet, we had to stop.

Safety has always and will always be our priority and the one thing we will never compromise on. We could no longer be sure we were acting in YOUR best interest by staying open, despite being one of the cleanest places in the UK (I'm sure of it!), so we didn't.

I would be lying if I said I didn't cry as I mopped the floor one last time, inhaled and coughed that last breath of broad spectrum disinfectant, and closed the door behind me one last time.
It was heartbreaking.

I know it was the right thing to do, I know thousands of small businesses are in the same boat, but it was heartbreaking nonetheless.

The dust is now starting to settle, bringing some much needed clarity on the horizon.
Information is starting to emerge as to what our role will be in helping people out of this crisis.

We're starting to find our breath again.... it will be ok.

As we become more comfortable with the discomforts and uncertainties of this new world, we will rise again. We will adapt and find new ways to add value and share our knowledge.

We WILL open our physical doors again, we have contingencies to ensure this, and with your help we will be better than ever before!

But until then, we are working on opening our Virtual Clinic to ensure we can keep supporting our community at this time of greatest need.... More on this in a later post :)

In the meantime, we want to apologize for all of you who had your appointment cancelled.

We miss seeing our lovely patients already but please bear with us a few more days... Like the Chrysalis transforms into a beautiful butterfly, we too will transform and take flight again!

Just a few more days... :)

COVOID-19 is the most infectious illness we have EVER seen.

As such, we are doing everything we can to minimise the risk of infection to keep each other safe.

Here’s what we’re doing:

- We’ve removed all reading material and toys from reception to minimise surface transmission
- We are now only using single use towels in the washroom
- Hand soap, hand cream and hand sanitiser were always made available but we have made extra bottles available in reception.
- We have removed fabric couch covers and replaced our pillow cases with wipeable ones to make it easier to sanitize surfaces between each client.
- Our hand hygiene was always good but we’re doubling up on it (as should everyone)
- We are sanitizing high traffic surfaces many times daily
- We will wear face a face mask during treatment for added protection to you
- If you want to wait in your car for your appointment time, just let us know ahead and we'll waive you in when we are ready
- We will follow guidelines ourselves and self-isolate if we show any signs or symptoms of COVOID-19.

Being a small practice with a relatively small footfall and washable surfaces throughout the building, we are very confident that we can maintain the highest possible standard of hygiene to mitigate the risks of virus transmission to the best of our ability.

What YOU need to do:

- Wash your hands as you arrive in the building or use the hand sanitiser in reception
- Bring your own reading material, if you wish to do so.
- Reschedule your appointment in the usual ways if:
You have a cough
Raised temperature
Feel unwell
If anybody in your household has any of these symptoms
If you have been in contact with anyone who tested positive to COVOID-19
Allow 14 days before you reschedule your appointment

We will be flexible with our cancellation policy, but we would still appreciate as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule due to self-isolation or COVOID-19 infection.

We can’t test you for COVOID-19 so we rely on your honesty and integrity to keep us, our families and our other clients safe.

Please remember: many of us are at risk of complications from COVOID-19.
Your honesty WILL save lives.

What Else Can You Do?

- Get some good sleep, it helps your body repair
- Eat well and stay hydrated
- Relax and meditate
- Go outside, take a few deep breaths and get some fresh air
- Avoid crowded places
- Keep up with official advice
- Make sure you have enough of the medicines you need and order them in plenty of time
- Ask others for help if you need some
- If you can, offer to help others who need it
- Tell your friends and family that you love them
- Send funny cats videos to your loved ones, a good laugh always helps!
- Call your elderly friends and family often; self-isolation will be long and lonely for them.
- Share toilet paper

A Few Words...

As citizens of the world, we face very difficult times ahead as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) - that's the actual name of the virus that is causing the illness COVOID-19 - makes its way around the world. The next few months will be anything but "business as usual". The world will be an unrecognisable place, our daily lives will change beyond recognition, many will have to self-isolate and people whom we love will get sick.... sadly, some won't make it.

The next few months will see the NHS stretch to its absolute limits. Our doctors, nurses and healthcare staff will have very difficult decisions to make and they will work themselves to exhaustion. We feel the service we provide will be an especially valuable contribution to public health in this time of crisis in helping to reduce the burden on the NHS and "do our bit". As such, we are planning to remain operational until further notice and continue serving our clients and community.

We will continue to monitor the situation daily and update our guidance accordingly.

In this time of crisis, we need kindness, understanding and love more than ever before so keep your heads up and your hearts strong.
.. And if you are stuck for toilet paper, we have a few spare rolls so just ask us, it will be a pleasure to help :)

The 'sleep industry' in the West is huge. The obsession with getting babies to sleep longer and more deeply than is appropriate for their developmental age is a burden many parents experience.

HOW DO I GET THEM TO SLEEP! HOW DO I GET THEM TO SLEEP THROUGH? HOW DO I GET THEM TO NAP LONGER? HOW DO I GET THEM TO NAP NOT ON ME?

Parents feel they are somehow failing if their baby doesn't nap for X minutes, or sleep a total of X hours a day, or if baby needs their help getting to sleep. Parents can feel ashamed, like they are lacking skill, like they're not cut out for parenthood, like they don't know what they're doing, and are often sold the unhelpful lie that baby sleep is the most important thing to 'nail' in the first year. Again, otherwise you're failing.

This is a Friday reminder from us - that you are not failing.

In many parts of the world, infant sleep is not such an obsession. Life goes on around it and the mother isn't basing her worth on such a small fragment of what it means to love and care for a baby.

Your baby is so much more than their ability to sleep deeply and for a long time. This isn't the sole reason they came into the world. They came into the world to be a person for you to love, for you to hold, for you to enjoy, for you to get to know.

There are good nights, less good nights, ok nights and awful ones. Better nap days, train wreck nap days, no nap days and great nap days. Every single parent has to learn to ride the highs and surf the lows. There is no escaping them. You get the picture....

Imagine how much less stressed those at home looking after babies and toddlers would be if they really knew this in their hearts. It doesn't mean sleep isn't important, and that Mums/Dads don't need a break in the relentlessness of it all. Of course they do. But if society stopped focusing in on sleep as a measure of the worth of the parent, or the success of a parent & instead understood normal infant sleep and supported parents while they were in the trenches of it in those early years, imagine how different it could be. I'm sure we're not the only ones who think that would be a great shift in thinking and therefore parental experience.

You're not failing. And neither is your baby.

Have a great weekend.
