Yoga is great in midlife, it's not all laying around and banging tingshers together you know! I've been practicing it since I was a kid and couldn't imagine it not being part of my life. It's stood the test of time having been around over 5,000 years!

It can help Improve our flexibility and mobility, which can reduce that stiffness we feel in middle age at the beginning or end of each day

It helps to keep our muscles strong and bones healthy - guarding against the increased risk of osteoporosis as we age.

It helps our balance, one of the first things we lose, helping to lower the risk of falls in later life.

Regular practice helps to bring down stress levels , reducing blood pressure, helping heart health and promoting better sleep as we become more aware of breath.

It should be inclusive too, so any well educated Yoga teacher should be able to teach a mixed group at all times, after all when do you stop becoming a 'beginner'? After the first session...

As an experienced PT with additional qualifications in Nutrition to support my clients in their food goals, I've been developing some great nutritionally strong meal plans for clients over the last few weeks. Often, they are surprised at how much they can eat and still achieve weight loss. Remember, it's the RIGHT kind of weight loss we are trying to achieve (if weight loss is your goal - it's not the only reason for nutritional support).

One thing I really wish people would understand is that STARVATION IS NOT THE ANSWER!

Granted, I guess It might sound like a simple solution, but it really isn't.
It may get some results to start with, but it is not sustainable, is pretty miserable and can be so damaging to our bodies.

When we restrict calories to the extreme our bodies revert to a kind of survival mode which can, ironically, hinder weight loss.

Our metabolism goes into slow mo... Prolonged restriction reduces the rate at which the body burns energy which can make fat loss more difficult over a period of time.

Starvation makes no distinction between body fat and lean muscle mass and tissue. In the absence of good nourishment it just breaks down whatever it can to survive which means important healthy lean muscle mass is reduced. This makes the metabolism even less efficient!

Extreme calorie restriction means our bodies cannot gain the 13 essential vitamins and around 40 essential minerals it needs for things like good immune function, strong bone health, energy production, nerve function, vision , healthy skin, hair and nails, good blood health ...the list goes on ..

Extreme restriction can also disrupt our hormones negatively. Not least, these can be hormones that regulate hunger, let us know when we are full and control stress, which can contribute to weight regain.

And on top of all that ( if that were not enough) Severe restriction can have an effect on mental health over time, affecting mood and even more concerning, a risk of disordered eating.

A sensible and evidenced approach maintains what I have always tried to instill in my clients, that the goal is not short-term deprivation, but long-term health.

Also, food is meant to be a joy.... Not the enemy. If you're struggling and need some help getting to your goal. I can help you, but in a safe and sustainable ( and hopefully enjoyable!) way.

Another year older today. Age is just a number they say, but you certainly start to feel those numbers as the years go by! We can sit and wait for age to engulf us, or we can choose and commit to keeping active and eating healthily (but well) and still have the odd treat along the way.

However, our exercise needs change as we age and we need to work at different things to try and future proof ourselves for the hope and privilege of later life.

So, I've been in the gym for a bit and now I'm off for a Margarita! 🍸🍸! 🀣🀣 Cin Cin!!

The Duchess surveys her surroundings! Lots of cancellations this week due to illness 😷😷😷. So, making the most of an afternoon off, The Duchess gets a longer Saturday walk than normal. City living is so diverse. One minute you're walking the busy streets, next you can be in the woodland of Mousehold and then we have the parks surrounding the city. This one being Waterloo Park. If you've got a lot going on in your head, just a walk outside wherever you live can help to clear away the cobwebs. You don't even have to have a Duchess to run on to.... Although, of course, I would highly recommend one! πŸΎπŸΎπŸ€£πŸ˜‚

As you know, good nutrition is a deep passion of mine (along with exercise obvs! 😁) and as a PT and Clinical PT I've been able to help people understand the benefits and learn the importance of good nutrition, not just for weight loss, but for improved health and fitness.

Well, yesterday (after another couple of years of study!) I finally got my results for my advanced Sports Nutrition. I passed my diploma with High Merit! And can now add Sports Nutrition Practitioner to my portfolio.

A homemade cappuccino this morning. Made in my little trusty Italian stove top espresso maker and the (non dairy) milk frothed in my Aldi electric milk frother!! 🀣.

Why? ... Because I craved one, because I had time to enjoy it.. and because why have these things and deny yourself, always sticking to the Americano?

In my diet (I hate that word) and nutrition chats with my clients this week, I was chatting with a lovely client of mine who is half way through a big weight loss ( doing fantastically well in a safe, sustainable and SENSIBLE weight loss program πŸ‘πŸ‘). This week though my client mentioned that on a long drive back from a busy working trip away, they passed a McDonald's (other fast food joints are available) and had a real craving for one. After listening to 'the parrot on their shoulder' they talked themselves out of it and carried on their journey. Eventually they got home late, tired and exhausted and too tired to cook so had a bowl of Weetabix 'because it was something ' and felt burned out and miserable.

I asked my client, What they would have had if they had stopped at McDonalds?

'Just a basic cheeseburger, that's what I had a craving for'.

Now, you know that I don't believe in becoming obsessed with calories, I'm all about the nutritional value of food not the 'marketing of calories ' HOWEVER, in this instance I was able to show my client that in a BASIC cheeseburger there are around 300 calories. Two Weetabix have around 140 calories..... But ...... add semi skimmed milk and around a teaspoon of sugar on each, it amounts to ..... around 300 calories.

So, on this occasion (on calorific value only - something I don't normally advocate) The craving for a Cheeseburger (treat) that could have been savoured and enjoyed as a treat would not have been the end of the world. One meal will not make a difference to weight loss. Sometimes that well earned treat, as long as it is a treat and also enjoyed and mindfully eaten, can aid our motivation and spur us on to our goals more the next day. Sometimes, we can take the scenic route and that small detour can bring us back on the freeway the next day! So occasionally (and I stress that occasionally!) it's OK to shoot that parrot 🦜 sitting on your shoulder 🀣

Do you need help finding that motivation to get fit? I can offer the whole package helping you get fit literally from the inside out. I'm not just a fitness professional, but a trained and experienced counsellor too. I'm here for that journey.

It's Olcote Wellbeing 's official birthday today. Many years (I've been around forever) of having cut the support cord of employment and going it alone on 4th July Independence Day!! I think it was the best (but most risky) thing I've ever done - but I don't regret it. Self employment is ultra hard, but also very rewarding, when you make your passion your business 😊). Hopefully, many more years still to come! πŸ™πŸ€žπŸ˜πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ I would buy myself a birthday cake, but I'm gluten free! πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†.

I'm recording online classes and out on my Pop-upPT rounds this morning, but I'm back in the gym this afternoon/evening. See some of you later 😁

The Duchess and I had a walk early this morning, but even then it was very warm πŸ₯΅. She hasn't had a walk for a couple of days because it's just too hot to take dogs out, particularly as The Duchess is not as young as she once was! (Although, you really would never know as she can jump as high as me! πŸ˜‚). But, I'd rather she looks a bit fed up for a couple of days than take her out and she gets poorly. It's not just dogs that have to be careful in this draining heat. When exercising, remember to stay out of the heat of the day, keep hydrated (although not excessively as over hydration can dilute salt levels and upset electrolyte balance) and adjust your intensity accordingly. 😊😎πŸ’ͺ

I've been working with one of my clients who has been working hard on weight loss since August. Today, to put into perspective how far she has come , she is just shy of 12 kg loss. That means 10 months ago she was essentially carrying 12 bags of flour around on her body each day, or a 12 kg kettle bell. Amazing achievement, lost safely and steadily combined with diet changes and exercise. This is the only sustainable way to lose weight. Diet changes, exercise to help muscle, stamina, flexibility and cardio vascular health and gradual, safe weight loss over time. There are no sensible or sustainable 'quick fixes'. Remember my recipe for achieving anything is commitment, consistency and motivation.

Awesome result. Great work from my client! πŸ…πŸ…πŸ’ͺ
