Tai Chi chuan which is a energetic based exercise system developed to express the Tao (middle way) in actio

n. Tai Chi and Chi Gong are one so the energetic practice found in qi gong has its roots in Taoism from yin/yang theory to energy cultivation methods. With this combination the body can be made to feel more supple and energized with a renewed sense of self empowerment and confidence. Tai Chi practice strengthens the body in a gentle way. It also sharpens and focuses the mind. Flexibility is increased and balance and posture improve dramatically over time, which alleviates many aches and pains as joints and muscles loosen and poor posture is corrected. It has been proven to reduce stress by altering the brainwave pattern, via relaxation and deep breathing, which in turn regulates the release of stress hormones. With regular practice you will gain a deep sense of calm, so aiding rest and sleep. Tai chi movements generate increased chi flow through the body’s acupuncture meridian lines and through the channels of other energy systems in the body, such as the left, right and central energy channels. As a result, you effectively cultivate more chi in several ways. You can unblock it, balance it and open the flow of chi moving within and through your energy channels. Equally, increasing the flow of fluids within your body also increases the flow of chi, as they are inextricably linked.

Pushing hand tips
Aligning the scapula creates a connected, stable upper body structure that optimises energy flow and power transfer, while rounding the upper back promotes flexibility and adaptability.

These principles allow you to maintain balance, neutralise incoming force, and redirect energy with ease.

This approach not only refines your physical structure but also deepens your understanding of Tai Chi’s internal mechanics, helping you achieve a stronger, more centered practice.

Crushing the Opponent’s Center – The Tai Chi Mental Approach

In Tai Chi, the concept of “crushing the opponent’s center” is less about brute force and more about strategic intent, balance, and focus. It reflects the art of disrupting their stability, physically, mentally, and energetically, while maintaining your own inner calm and alignment.

This approach requires us to cultivate mindfulness and precision, learning to feel and respond to subtle shifts in energy. By grounding ourselves deeply in the moment and staying centered, we gain the ability to move effortlessly into our opponent’s space, neutralising their power without compromising our own.

Tai Chi reminds us that the true opponent is often our own ego or fear. Mastering the mental approach of crushing the center teaches us not only how to win in conflict but also how to remain unshaken in life’s challenges.

Stay balanced. Stay centered. Stay in control.
