Does Va**ng Affect Hair Loss?

Recent discussions suggest that va**ng, much like smoking, may contribute to hair loss. Although direct evidence is limited, the chemicals and ni****ne in e-cigarettes can potentially harm hair follicles and reduce blood circulation to the scalp, leading to conditions like telogen effluvium where hair falls out faster than it grows back. This type of hair loss, however, is usually reversible once the harmful activity stops. Maintaining a healthy diet and managing stress can also support hair health. For those concerned, switching to less harmful ni****ne alternatives like patches or gum can mitigate these effects.

DO I NEED A CROWN HAIR TRAINSPLANT?

The “crown” is found at the top of the head, heading slightly towards the rear. When it comes to balding, one of the first areas to suffer hair loss is the crown. Hair loss in this area is often caused by a process called “male pattern baldness” (androgenic alopecia). This is where excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is produced by the body and combines to the hair follicles on your head; this disrupts the growth cycle of the hair on your head, causing irreversible shedding.

When it comes to hair loss, getting hair transplant surgery is the only option that offers a long-term, natural solution for patients. A crown hair transplant looks to take existing hair on your head, and implant this into your affected area.

Different patients often show different severity of balding and it is this that usually dictates the course of treatment required. For those experiencing thinning, a lighter course of PRP treatment may be all that is needed. Equally, for those who have suffered extensive balding, an FUT or FUE hair transplant may be required.

All hair transplants at Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics are carried out by GMC registered doctors at CQC clinics. We want you to rest assured that our procedures are clean, safe, and carried out by experienced professionals.

Have you made a resolution to quit smoking? If so, the benefits may be seen on your head as well as your lungs!

Did you know that smoking can quicken the effects of androgenetic alopecia? In a 2020 study, researchers compared rates of early-onset alopecia in two respective groups of smokers and non-smokers between the ages of 20 and 35 [1].

Results showed 425 out of 500 smokers (or 85%) experienced some signs of hair loss, while only 200 of 500 nonsmokers reported the same [2]. As such, it’s fair to assume that smoking can have an effect on hair loss, quickening the rate at which conditions like androgenetic alopecia can develop.

So why does this happen? Two studies, conducted in 2003 and 2018 respectively, found oxidative stress from cigarette smoking to cause hair loss [2&3]. Oxidative stress is where a heightened number of “free radicals” travel around your body, depriving your hair follicles of oxygen and resulting in an increased rate of hair loss.
One of the healthiest choices you can make (for your lungs and hair) is to stop smoking. Not only will your friends and family help you, but your hair will too!

Will an FUE Hair Transplant Hurt?

Pain is subjective and everyone has different pain thresholds. We have had various feedback from patients so to break it down:

1) The only part that is potentially painful is the injection of local anaesthetic. We use REALLY small needles (30G to be precise) to administer these injections so the feedback has been that some have experienced some slight pain whilst others have said it's more of a slight discomfort. As soon as the injections are done, the rest of the procedure is pain free. In fact, some patients actually fall asleep during the extraction phase as they are lay down listening to music.
