Ear visualisation during ear wax removal—this is super important for both patient safety and clinical investigation. Many clinicians will use head loupes. These offer around x2 magnification. At Ear Care Specialists we invested in an ENT operating microscope —here, magnification can be adjusted up to ×25. We would typically use x7.5 or x12.5 depending on the wax location and ear depth. What's more, the binocular lenses of the microscope allow for true depth perception (crucial when placing instruments down the delicate ear canal!) and the super powerful LED light illuminates the ear canal for detailed examination. We even have a built-in camera and hook up to an HD monitor for training and live viewing.
Having used head loupes (3 different models) and an iPhone endoscope in the past, it is safe to say that the microscope is a far superior tool for ear examination.
