Are you interested in learning how to care for your pet or stray in an emergency should the situation arise?
Advanced pet first aid level 3 (VTQ) covers much more detail about the different injuries and illnesses that can affect dogs and cats. The course has been designed to give the pet owner or pet professional much more information to be able to detect early when something is wrong and give the appropriate care.
The course also covers the anatomy and physiology of animals and different first-aid treatments that are available. Although the treatment is basically the same between dogs and cats, the advanced course has a dedicated section for cats.
This course is a ProTrainings Vocational Training Qualification (VTQ) and is ideal for pet professionals or individuals.

This qualification is recognised by UCAS, which means you can claim 8 tariff points for successfully completing this training. That will contribute to your UCAS application if you are applying for a course with one of Britain’s universities from September 2023.

This regulated qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within the industry wishing to become an Emergency First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982 and subsequent changes including the latest updates.

The recommended course duration is 1 day and the topics covered include the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency First Aider, assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness and assisting a casualty who is suffering from injury and illness. The qualification is assessed via on-going oral and/or written questioning and practical demonstration.

The minimum contact hours for this qualification, excluding breaks should be for a minimum period of 6 hours over 1 day as a classroom course. In May 2016 the HSE and Awarding Organisations announced that computer-based blended training is now allowed for all workplace first aid courses.

Each learner who completes this course will be awarded UCAS points that will contribute to their progression into higher education. UCAS tariff points translate qualifications and grades into a numerical value which is then used by higher education course providers to assess whether learners have met their entry requirements. While universities will have their own entry requirements, this new points system gives learners the opportunity to generate more UCAS points to support their progression into university.

All successful students will be issued with an Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate, detailing their achievement. The HSE dictate, that to be valid in the workplace, learners must retake the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification before the expiry of 3 years from the date that the original qualification was achieved. The HSE state that the full Emergency First Aid at Work qualification must be taken again to be valid in the workplace. Please contact ProTrainings for further information.

All our first aid courses fully meet the UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2021 as per the HSE requirements.

The HSE strongly recommend that all first aiders complete an annual first aid refresher course and our online course meets this requirement.

Please be advised that the classroom course has a minimum age requirement of 14.

The content of this and all our courses has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines and come with a Certified CPD Statement as well as a ProTrainings Certificate and for online courses an Evidence Based Learning statement.

MYTH BUSTER TIME!
#1
"If someone has a nosebleed, tilt their head back"
Current best practice is to lean the casualty forward and let the blood drain from the nose rather than tilt their head back, where the blood could run down their throat and cause them to vomit. It would also be good practice to pinch the soft part of the nostrils and ask the casualty to breathe through their mouth. If a nosebleed doesn’t stop after 10 minutes, call for an ambulance or take them to hospital.

GIANT HOGWEED (aka giant cow parsley) is a fairly common plant in the UK, but did you know it is a toxic plant that can cause severe skin blisters*, burns and even blindness?

Toxic components in the leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds can be transferred to the skin by touch, and although these do not cause burning alone, they make skin sensitive to sunlight, which can then cause rashes, burns and severe blistering. How badly the skin is affected depends on the individual, but children are known to be particularly sensitive.

NHS guidance is to wash the area of skin with soap and water as quickly as possible and keep it covered.

If a burn appears, treat it as you usually would a burn:

• Stop the burn process as soon as possible.
• Cool the skin with cool running water for 20 minutes
• Cover the burn with cling film.
• Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
• Raise the affected area, if possible, to help to reduce swelling.

Please see your GP or call 111 if symptoms are severe or persistent.
