🎓 Congratulations to our Level 4 Graduates! 🎓

After 3 months of hands-on training, including 5 full weekends of face-to-face tuition led by Luke Ursell, our latest group has officially completed their Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy course!

At The Sports Massage Academy, we focus on high quality, practical teaching that gives our students real skills they can use in their clinics. This course was all about building confidence, sharpening assessment skills, and learning how to deal with a wide range of injuries and dysfunctions.

We covered:
🔹 Special testing
🔹 Trigger point therapy
🔹 Soft tissue release
🔹 Muscle energy techniques

This isn’t just another course — it’s a step towards becoming a top therapist. And we’re proud to keep supporting our grads through our postgraduate development scheme.

It’s been a pleasure teaching this group, and we’re excited to see where your careers take you. 👏

Meet Lucy, June's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

"I work full-time for an expedition company, where my role involves a lot of desk time on the day-to-day. Outside of work, though, I'm extremely active: running, hiking, going to the gym, cycling, and generally embracing the outdoors. With that lifestyle, injuries, whether mine or those of friends and family, weren't uncommon. I became increasingly curious about the "why" behind the pain: what was actually happening in the body, and how I could help. That curiosity is what led me to sports massage. I also had a friend who had completed the course with Sports Massage Academy and they couldn't speak highly enough of it."

How have you used your new qualification?

"Since qualifying in December 2023, I've launched The Sports Massage Club, based in the New Forest, Hampshire. I currently work early mornings and evenings from The Revolution Gym and Pro Fusion Therapy. I've also completed additional certifications in Kinesiology Taping and Dry Cupping, both of which have added real value to my practice. I'm obsessed with the Dry Cupping!"

What did you think of the course you attended?

"The Level 3 course at the Sports Massage Academy exceeded my expectations. The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive. I did consider other (slightly cheaper) courses, but after a phone call with Alex, the decision was easy. Their expertise and genuine passion made it a no-brainer and I'd recommend them without hesitation."

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"Go for it. Learning how the body works is fascinating, and there's something really empowering about building your own business (if that's the route you want to take). You'll gain insights you never expected, meet amazing clients, and most importantly make a real difference. It's hands-down one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I'm planning to take the Level 4 course soon!"

How have you used your new qualification?

"I have used my qualification to start my own business and I am growing week upon week, not just as a business but also as an individual being able to help people and also meet new people. Gaining not just clients, but friends in the process of building my career, is an amazing thing."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"The training received from the SMA was excellent and gave me the confidence I needed to start my own business and career in something I enjoy! The business webinars are also an excellent tool that I think everyone should be watching if you are undertaking the sports massage course."

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"My number one tip for anyone thinking to joint this industry is do plenty of research, trust yourself and your training and don't have any regrets!"

The course was ideal for me as I wanted to change career from being a fitness instructor as I was teaching more than twenty classes a week. I wanted a change and a new challenge."

Meet Louise, February's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

"My background is in engineering where I started as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice in the aerospace industry 18 years ago. I built my career in Industrial Manufacturing while studying a Masters Degree in Engineering and Business Management while working full time. I went on to Director level running factories globally travelling the world working in different countries and cultures with large cross functional teams and a huge customer focus. Over the last 5 years I started to improve my fitness with a PT and then moved onto online coaching. My coach at this point introduced me to bodybuilding and I started to train in this style. I found the sport really interesting and the process to me was very similar to engineering - having a vision and goal of a product, understanding the inputs and requirements to achieve that, creating a process for it to work, monitoring, reviewing and analysing the results then continually adapting to improve that. With that I then developed an interest in Sports Massage."

How have you used your new qualification?

"Since graduating I have opened my own clinic and built a business which serves everyone combined with a niche in bodybuilding. The same principles as engineering apply to my business. I need to understand my customers well - what do bodybuilders need and what does the general public need? I must understand anatomy well, know how to investigate when things are not working correctly or optimally, know the process and techniques to fix it, test the result and then continually improve. I tailor my business around body building because I find it a fascinating sport and I hold a lot of admiration for athletes who compete in this sport. It is one of longevity, discipline, relentless determination and humility and the type of people who partake in it have these qualities. You become aligned within a population of people who hold the skill of delayed gratification and show discipline and compassion."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"I thoroughly enjoyed my training with Sports Massage Academy I have complete my Level 4, Cupping and IASTM with them and I found them all to be really well run. The instructors are great and teach in a way which suits me, is easy to understand and the support post training is great too. I know I can call upon the instructors if I need to. I’ve now chosen to carry on with the Level 5 course with Luke on a 1:1 basis and I’m really looking forward to completing that by the end of 2025."

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"If you want to have a great business then focus on being a great therapist. Your mission is to bring value to your customers. That means you need to build knowledge, skills and nurture lasting relationships with them while having solutions to their problems. Master that then the rest will follow."

Meet Georgia, January's Graduate of the Month!

What is your Background?

"My journey into sports massage looks a little different from most. I enrolled on my Level 3 Sports Massage course when I just turned 16 years old, while studying Sports & Exercise Science full-time at college. Knowing I wanted a career in manual therapy and rehabilitation, I was keen to get a head start by gaining practical skills early on.

How have you used your new qualification?

"After gaining my qualification in early 2023, I jumped straight into pre and post-event sports massage opportunities, starting with a local CrossFit open. This opened the door to self-employed work at an injury clinic, where I spent the next year and a half helping hundreds of people, from athletes to office workers. During this time, I took the leap to set up my own practice from a room in my family home, growing gradually and building a solid client base.

Fast forward two years, at 18 years old, I now run my home clinic while also renting space in a busy national gym, Ultra Flex Lincoln, offering a range of sports massage therapy services. Also, i'm currently at university studying Osteopathy, the Sports Massage Academy's Level 3 course played a huge part in strengthening my application."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"I absolutely loved the course! Its flexibility allowed me to balance part-time work and full-time college studies. The support was amazing; our group chat was a fantastic resource for any questions outside of learning time (and we still have it today!), alongside a Facebook group for additional advice and tips.

Since qualifying, I've gone on to complete multiple CPD courses with the Sports Massage Academy, including cupping, IASTM, foot and ankle mobilisation, and my clients' favourite, deep tissue facial massage. The tutors are incredibly knowledgeable and always on hand to answer any questions, both during the course and after. The number of courses I've chosen to complete with the academy speaks volumes about their support and quality. I couldn't recommend them enough!"

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"Don't wait for the "perfect time". Just take the leap and get started! You'll surprise yourself with how much you can achieve. And remember, no one ever knows everything. Stay curious, stay motivated, and always be open to learning and growing."
