Dr Rebecca Bennett receives Honorary Master's degree!

The Trust is proud to announce that Dr Rebecca Bennett, a Higher Specialty Trainee in Forensic Psychiatry and former Officer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), has been awarded an Honorary Master's degree by the University of Derby. The award recognises her exceptional work supporting female veterans and her contributions to mental health and forensic services.

Dr Bennett's career journey began with a degree in engineering and a commission in the British Army. She served in challenging operational environments, including Iraq and Afghanistan, before making the decision to leave military life and retrain in medicine. Inspired by her interest in human behaviour and the psychological challenges faced by her fellow soldiers, she found her calling in forensic psychiatry - a field that marries her military experience with her passion for understanding the human mind.

Notts NHS Trust saluted for outstanding support to Armed Forces and veterans!

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is proud to announce that it has been officially reaccredited as a Veteran Aware NHS Trust for a further three years. This national recognition, awarded by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), reflects the Trust’s ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and the dedication of colleagues who support veterans, reservists, serving personnel and their families.

Over the past three years, the Trust has demonstrated a strong and sustained focus on improving care and support for the Armed Forces community. This includes proactively identifying veterans in our care, training staff to understand their unique needs, sharing best practice across services, and celebrating the contribution of colleagues who have served in the Armed Forces themselves.

The reaccreditation is a direct result of the compassion, dedication and hard work of staff across the organisation. Whether delivering care to a veteran, supporting a military colleague, organising activities for Armed Forces Day, or simply asking someone about their service background, these everyday actions have contributed to making our Trust a place where the Armed Forces community feels seen, supported and respected.

In addition to this achievement, several Nottinghamshire Healthcare colleagues have been awarded the VCHA Merit Coin - a national honour recognising individuals who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to support veterans and embed the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant into healthcare. These staff members have been instrumental in leading service improvements, developing support resources, establishing Armed Forces Champions, and helping the Trust gain wider recognition through the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

• Brian Bonner, Facilities Contract Services Monitoring Officer
• Ben Seaman, Senior Employment Specialist
• Laura Ecclestone, Adult Mental Health Lead for Eating Difficulties
• Joanna Rapson, Volunteering Services Manager
• Angela Holland, Research Delivery Assistant
• Kelly Searston, People Development Facilitator

Their work exemplifies what it means to be Veteran Aware - not just meeting the standard but continually striving to raise it.

The Armed Forces Staff Network also continues to go from strength to strength, with over 129 active Armed Forces Champions across the Trust. The network plays a vital role in raising awareness, providing peer support, and driving forward improvements for both colleagues and patients connected to the Armed Forces community.

Throughout the year, the network hosts a wide range of events, including the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, creating safe and welcoming spaces for connection and conversation. The network also proudly leads the Trust’s participation in key national campaigns such as Armed Forces Week, Reserves Day, and Remembrance Day, ensuring that the contributions and sacrifices of the Armed Forces community are recognised and celebrated Trust-wide.

Speaking about the announcement, Jen Guiver, Executive Director of People and Culture said: “We are incredibly proud to have been reaccredited as a Veteran Aware Trust. This is a powerful reflection of the culture we’ve built and the values we live by every day. To also see our colleagues recognised with national Merit Coins is a testament to their exceptional commitment and impact. We remain firmly dedicated to listening, learning and improving to ensure the best possible experience for those who have served and their families.”

Joanna Rapson, volunteer Services Manager and one of the Merit Coin recipients, said: "As a military spouse since 2006 and someone deeply involved in supporting military families within Notts Healthcare, I understand firsthand the challenges and sacrifices these families face. My husband’s role as an Air Operations Officer at RAF Cranwell, has given me insight into the unique demands of military life, from frequent moves to deployments. It’s more than just a commitment for me; it’s a passion to support our loved ones and their invaluable service. I’m honoured to be recognised with the VCHA Merit Coin and proud to work in an organisation that values and supports military families."

Angela Holland, Research Delivery Assistant and another Merit Coin recipient added: “It is incredibly moving to be recognised with the VCHA Merit Coin, especially whilst still dealing with my own personal challenges and recovery. Our Armed Forces Community Network at Nottinghamshire Healthcare is deeply passionate about supporting veterans, serving personnel, family and friends of the military community. We are always discussing and reviewing new ways the Trust can help and support our military community. The Trust and my colleagues were enormously encouraging and supportive of my involvement at the Invictus Games 2025 and we hope to have an Armed Forces Community Network presence at the upcoming 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. I will continue to work with my amazing and dedicated colleagues, to help support those that have devoted so much of their lives to the military.”

Laura Ecclestone, Chair of the Trust’s Armed Forces Community Staff Network, added: “Our network supports and recognises the unique experiences of our Armed force’s communities, including those who continue to serve, have served, and their families. We’re passionate about improving understanding and visibility across the organisation and upholding the values of the Armed Forces Covenant. This reaccreditation and the Merit Coin awards show that our work is being recognised and that our voice is helping shape real, positive change. It’s something we’re all incredibly proud of.”

As a Veteran Aware Trust, Nottinghamshire Healthcare will continue to strengthen its support for the Armed Forces community through meaningful action, strong partnerships and a culture of inclusion and respect.

Kingfisher Ward raises over £450 at first-ever fundraising event!

Kingfisher Ward at Blossomwood, part of the Trust’s Older People’s Care Unit, has proudly hosted its first-ever fundraising day - a wonderful milestone for the team and a positive start under the leadership of our new ward manager.

The event was a joyful celebration of community spirit, creativity and collaboration. Highlights included a human fruit machine that brought plenty of laughter, a delicious spread of homemade bakes, a visit from a local ice cream van and a raffle with prizes generously donated by local small businesses.

Thanks to the kindness and enthusiasm of everyone involved, the ward raised an impressive £456.36. These funds will directly support the celebration of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) days on the ward, as well as help provide meaningful activities for the people we care for.

This initiative is closely linked with the wider Culture of Care programme, where Kingfisher Ward is actively exploring and celebrating the diversity of its team and patient community. It’s an important step towards creating a more inclusive, engaging and supportive environment for all.

The fundraising was supported by the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Charity, which helps fund projects and activities that go above and beyond what the NHS can normally provide. From therapeutic resources and wellbeing initiatives to patient experiences and community events, the charity plays a vital role in enhancing care and improving lives across the Trust.

Jasmine Cutts, Ward Manager at Kingfisher Ward, said: “It was incredibly special to see our first fundraising day come to life, and I’m so proud of the team for making it such a success. A huge thank you goes to our brilliant Activity Co-ordinator, Karen Shepherd, who organised the entire event with such passion and creativity. It brought everyone together and really captured the spirit of Kingfisher Ward. The funds raised will help us build on our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and create even more meaningful moments for the people we care for.”

Adam Jackson, Live Team Leader, said: “‘It has been amazing working with the Kingfisher team to carry out their first fundraiser day – which was a great success! Niamh and Michelle, supporting on the day, were proud to be part of the experience and the hard work put in by Karen, Jasmine and the wider team to pull the activities and event together. We look forward to seeing the impact these vital additional funds have on enhancing the patient experience on Kingfisher.’’

Becky Sutton, Chief Operating Officer, added: “This is a fantastic example of how our teams go above and beyond to create positive, inclusive spaces for both staff and the people they support. I’m really pleased to see Kingfisher Ward embracing the Culture of Care programme in such a meaningful way. Events like this not only raise funds but also strengthen the sense of community and connection that makes such a difference in care environments.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who donated, visited, volunteered, or helped bring the day to life. Your support is helping make a real difference.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare was proud to take part in this year’s Notts Pride - an inspiring celebration of diversity, inclusion and community spirit.

With our theme “Pride is Not Just for Christmas,” we brought a little festive cheer to the heart of summer to share an important message: that support for LGBT+ people should never be seasonal. Our Christmassy stall, complete with tinsel, trees and a warm welcome, was designed to spark conversation, raise awareness and celebrate everything that makes Pride meaningful - not just on one day, but every day.

We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the colleagues who gave up their time to volunteer at the stall, engage with the public, and share information about our Trust’s commitment to equity and inclusion. Your passion, warmth and energy were truly appreciated. We also want to thank everyone who joined us for the Pride march - your presence showed our support in action and helped us stand proudly alongside the communities we serve.

Pride was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the public, hear personal stories and talk about how we’re working across the Trust to make healthcare more inclusive, compassionate and equitable.

As a pro-equity organisation, we stand with those who continue to face discrimination, exclusion or health inequalities. Pride reminded us how far we’ve come, but also how much more we can do. We remain firmly committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces for every member of our workforce and for all patients and carers who rely on our care.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stall, joined the conversation, and celebrated with us. We’re already looking forward to next year - and continuing to keep the spirit of Pride alive in everything we do - happy Pride!
