We're delighted to report that the Bereavement on the Curriculum campaign has proved successful 👏

We've been proudly supporting the campaign, which has been driven by John Adams, of Perry & Phillips Funeral Directors and former President of the National Association of Funeral Directors, with help from our friends at Archway Learning Trust.

After years of campaigning, petitioning and lobbying, The Department for Education has just this week confirmed an update to their statutory guidance on health and relationships education. A huge milestone.

It outlines that by the end of primary school, pupils should be taught that change, loss and bereavement can provoke a range of feelings, that grief is a natural response to bereavement, and that everyone grieves differently.

By the end of secondary school, they should be taught how families and relationships change over time, including through birth, death, separation and new relationships.

This is an incredible achievement and we'e very proud to have contributed to what we believe is a hugely important cause.

Our thanks and congratulations to all who have helped make this possible.

We know our Rolls-Royce fleet are popular - so here's more on their history.

During the 1970s, several of our vehicles were painted in a fetching two-tone livery of black and silver. This came about after we purchased a silver Phantom V, which was planned to be repainted black but proved popular in the silver before we could do so.

The two-tone livery proved to be ideal for both funerals and weddings, and lasted until around 1988, when many of these vehicles became fully silver.

We recently repainted our Phantom VIII into a modern version of this livery - and we think it looks fantastic.

We've grown substantially over the years, from our original base in Nottingham to our current total of 25 funeral homes across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

In 2023 we celebrated 20 years since our largest acquisition to date, the Ilkeston Co-op Funeral Division. This saw us add funeral homes in Ilkeston, Cotmanhay, Spondon and Long Eaton in Derbyshire, as well as Stapleford and Wollaton in Nottinghamshire, to our network of branches.

This was a major expansion for us, and since then we've gone on to acquire more funeral businesses across the East Midlands.

Recent additions include the opening of the Bottesford home, marking our first in Leicestershire, and Hammerwich Crematorium & Cemetery.

We're well known for our Rolls-Royce fleet, thought to be the largest funeral fleet in the world.

It didn't quite start out like that, though. Our first motor vehicle was the Ford Model T van pictured below in 1924.

Also pictured are two of our earliest hearses.

Before the age of the car, our funeral hearses all looked very much like this - horse-drawn.

We're known for our fleet of Rolls-Royce vehicles now, but prior to 1924 - when we got our first motor vehicle - horse-drawn hearses and hand biers were our only offering.

Despite now having what we believe to be the largest funeral fleet of Rolls-Royce vehicles in the world, we still offer the horse-drawn horses to this day. We can even provide the hand biers for smaller village funerals.

A wide variety of plumes, drapes and tacks can be selected to personalise the procession.

We've been a proud family business ever since our foundation by Arthur William Lymn (left) and Harold Lymn (right) in 1907.

In 1929, following Arthur’s passing, Harold and Arthur's wife Louisa stepped up to carry the business forward. When Louisa passed in 1939, Harold took the reins, steering the firm through the challenges of WWII, while volunteering with the Civil Defence mortuary.

The next generation - Harold’s son Douglas and son-in-law George Rose - took the business to new heights. Both Douglas and George became members of the British Institute of Embalmers and were part of the first ever repatriation of remains from England to Pakistan.

In 1977, a year after Harold’s passing, we moved our HQ to Robin Hood House on Robin Hood Street, where we proudly remain today.

We had a great time at the Registration Number Club Rally at Wythall Transport Museum in Worcestershire this weekend 🚗

The event is the original UK club for cherished number plate enthusiasts and is dedicated to the long-standing right to hold and transfer a cherished vehicle registration mark - a right which has existed for more than 120 years.

We were delighted to join 50 other fantastic vehicles in attendance, from individual number plate enthusiasts through to professional traders. We were even fortunate enough to place as runners-up in the Class 4 category with our plate ‘1 LYM’, with sixth generation of the family business, George, in attendance to pick up the accolade.

Well done to all those who took part 👏

In August 1907 Arthur William Lymn conducted his first funeral in Nottingham, and A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service was formed.

This month, we'll be going back in time and taking a look at some moments in our long and storied history.

Pictured below is our Sneinton garage - how many of you knew we'd been based in this building for this long?

Much has changed since the mid-century, but if you find yourself walking through Robin Hood Street today, you'll still find our garage with Roll-Royce vehicles in the window!

🇬🇧🇵🇹 Why do funerals in the UK take so much longer than in Portugal?

It’s a question many have asked today as we mark the funeral of Portuguese International footballer Diogo Jota, held just a few days after his tragic death.

In Portugal, it’s common for funerals to take place within 24–48 hours, whereas here in the UK it can be 14-21 days or more. Why?

📜 We are bound by legal and official processes in the UK.
Before a funeral can take place here, the death must be formally registered. If the death was unexpected or unexplained, a coroner or post-mortem may also be required — and we cannot proceed until these investigations are completed. These processes are essential but can add days, even weeks, to the timeline.

🌡️ Climate & tradition — In Portugal’s warmer climate and Catholic culture, funerals have traditionally happened quickly, both for practical reasons and as a mark of respect.

🕊️ Time to plan — British funerals tend to be more personalised and elaborate, giving families time to gather, arrange a service, flowers, music and more.

📅 Availability — Crematoria and venues in the UK can also be very busy, which means waiting for the next available slot.

So while it can feel frustrating to wait so long here compared to places like Portugal, much of it comes down to law, authority, and culture — not choice.

Today’s service for Diogo Jota reminds us that no matter the timeline, what matters most is the honouring of a life.

🙏 Rest in peace, Diogo and André.
