How Safe is Cataract Surgery

I am truly grateful for all the amazing comments. I am humbled. I have had one negative comment and although I have hidden it as it would be inappropriate for the person to be identified on here it is important that I acknowledge it. Sometimes operations do go wrong. Eyes are complex, fragile and with little margin of error. I sometimes get asked "don't you get bored of doing the same operation over and over?" and the answer is no. Each and every case is a challenge and each eye can behave very differently. I liken a surgeon to an airline pilot. If everything is normal and straight forward then you do not really need an amazing pilot. It is when things go wrong that you need someone who is good at what they do. Sometimes things do go wrong and some of my patients will end up worse rather than better. It breaks my heart and, mainly because it happens so rarely in my hands, such cases still haunt me. I do know for certain however that whoever did the operation that complication would have ensued and I gave the patient the best chance of a reasonable outcome despite the complication.
