International Day of Happiness is marked every year on 20 March. It was established by the United Nations to recognise that happiness and wellbeing are important goals for people across the world.

What it’s about

The day encourages:
• Prioritising mental wellbeing
• Building positive relationships
• Focusing on gratitude and kindness
• Promoting a more balanced, compassionate way of living

Simple ways to observe it
• Write a short gratitude list
• Reach out to someone you care about
• Spend time in something creative or calming
• Take a mindful pause and notice what feels good today

It doesn’t need to be big or performative. Often it’s the small, steady things that genuinely support happiness.

Here are a few creative self-care prompts that work well for journaling, drawing, or simple reflective art exercises.

1. Draw Your Inner Weather

Create a picture that shows your inner weather today.
Is it calm sunshine, light rain, fog, wind, or a storm?
When you finish, write a few words about what might help the weather shift gently.

2. The Safe Place Page

Create a page that represents a place where you feel safe and calm.
You might draw it, collage it, or write words around the edges that describe how it feels.

3. Three Small Gratitudes

Write or illustrate three small things from today that brought a moment of comfort or joy.
They can be very simple — a cup of tea, a quiet moment, a kind word.

4. Colours of the Day

Choose three colours that reflect your day.
Fill a page with those colours using paint, pencil, or doodles.
Then write one sentence about why you chose each colour.

5. A Kind Message to Yourself

Write a short note of kindness to yourself, as if you were speaking to a good friend who needed encouragement.

6. The Let-Go Page

Write or draw anything that is weighing on your mind.
Then gently cover parts of it with colour, patterns, or shapes to symbolise letting it soften or release.

7. Your Energy Circle

Draw a large circle.
Inside the circle place things that restore your energy.
Outside the circle place things that drain your energy.

Make this the day that you give yourself that time to breathe, create, reflect and renew your spirit 🦋

A March Mindset

March carries a quiet turning.

The ground is still cold, yet something underneath is shifting. Light lingers a little longer in the evenings. Buds appear before the leaves. Nothing is in full bloom — and that is the point.

A March mindset is not about rushing into big, bold change. It is about gentle readiness.

It asks:
• What is beginning to stir in me?
• What feels possible now that didn’t in January?
• Where do I need patience rather than pressure?

March teaches us that growth is often invisible at first. Roots deepen before shoots rise. Energy returns slowly. This is not failure. It is preparation.

You might:
• Clear a small space in your home or mind.
• Start something modest rather than dramatic.
• Spend time outdoors noticing light, colour, sound.
• Write down what you are ready to leave behind.

This month is a threshold — not winter, not quite spring. It invites steadiness. A soft commitment to move forward, without forcing yourself into full bloom before your time.

Let March be about tending, not proving.

Feeling low in winter is completely natural—it’s not your fault. Our energy and mood often shift with the seasons, as days get shorter and light is softer.

Be gentle with yourself:
• Step outside for a little daylight when you can.
• Keep simple routines and move a little each day.
• Nourish your body with warm, wholesome food.
• Connect with someone, even briefly.
• Create, journal, or enjoy music—small acts of care lift the spirit.

Winter is a time to ease, rest, and nurture yourself. If low mood lingers or affects daily life, seeking support is a kind and helpful step.
