Not all creams will provide enough occlusion (barrier function) to the skin after injury. It’s for this reason we educate about scar care products on our courses. Providing evidence led information about scar care will help improve outcomes for those recovering after injuries, from majorly burns to smaller keyhole surgeries, effective skin care can reduce symptoms and support the skin during this phase.

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust

Everyone’s skin is different and some people are more prone to problems with their scars than others.

Scars may stick to underlying tissues and become itchy or sensitive to the touch.

If scars run across/close to a joint, they could limit movement at that joint and restrict function.

Massage treatments can help by:
- softening scar tissue
- flattening, smoothing and cooling scars
- bringing down redness

When can I start massage?
As soon as stitches are out and the wound is closed.

Please speak to a clinician at PRU if you have concerns about your scar and would like more information.
