Marketing in the supplement industry ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

can be super shady at times.

When I started out lifting weights,

I used to buy things like this all the time.

โ€œCatalystโ€
โ€œAnabolicโ€
โ€œMegaโ€
โ€œAll in oneโ€
โ€œMass gainerโ€

I used to believe that these were the supplements that would make the difference.

Then when I actually got into understanding and reading a bit of research,

I knew most of it was bullsh*t

Now,

Iโ€™m not going to stand with my top off in a supermarket and tell you itโ€™s ruining your gut ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Because most supplements wonโ€™t.

But what I can tell you is that many of these over hyped supplements donโ€™t do anything special over simple food.

Specifically, when it comes to protein, a whey protein shake can mainly be used for convenience.

Whey also metabolises relatively quickly, so that helps.

But,

It doesnโ€™t mean that you NEED to have one.

A chicken breast or a few eggs will do just fine instead.

And in all likelihood, youโ€™ll probably pay more for a protein like the one in the video than a simple whey concentrate or isolate.

And we could all save a bit of money at the minute.

3 whole years of

Today marks 3 years since we officially started up the Concentric business and I started working with my official first client ๐Ÿคฉ

After about one year of indecisiveness ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Now, looking backโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m so glad I pulled the trigger.

Thereโ€™s been so many wins along the way.

โœ… 3 years of helping people smash their goals.

โœ… 3 whole years of helping people get Stronger and Fitter.

โœ… 3 whole years of clients smashing PRs and learning all about balanced nutrition.

And itโ€™s a good time to take some reflection over the past 3 years.

Some things have gone well,

(Mainly the above)

Some things have not gone so well.

(Tax returns, hello ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป )

But whether good or bad, itโ€™s all been a learning process.

And while itโ€™s been a great journey for me,

None of it would be possible without the past and present clients who have put there trust in me over the years.

You the real MVPโ€™s ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿค›๐Ÿป

Hell, even if youโ€™re considering coaching in the future, Iโ€™m looking forward to it.

โš ๏ธ 17 lbs lost in 12 weeks โš ๏ธ

and still going strong ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

When Matt and I first met in February, he was really clear what he wanted to achieve and how he needed my support.

โš–๏ธ Rapid fat loss to help with his climb of Mount Toubkal.
๐Ÿ†™ A slight reverse out of this to support training goals.
๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ปAccountability, accountability and more accountability.

To the naked eye, those goals look quite โ€œnormalโ€,

but there are two big things hidden in those goals that make Matt unique.

First of all, Matt has a condition that means he has no feelings in his legs,

making the achievement of climbing a mountain and maintaining a solid exercise regime all the more impressive.

Secondly, Matt has a good knowledge of the what and how of fat loss, having had successful stints before.

But,

What he really needed is what so many clients unknowingly need.

โœ… Accountability.

Of course, this looks different for every person.

And for Matt it means having a small check in everyday.

This way he stays committed to the routine and subsequently the goal.

Not everyone needs this, but this is what works for Matt, and whatever works for Matt, ultimately works for me.

Thatโ€™s where a coach comes in so handy, and it's usually the most underrated part of having one.

๐Ÿ‘คA coach is there to keep you accountable
๐Ÿ” A coach is there to lift you up when you feel like things are getting tough.
๐ŸŽค A coach is there to share their knowledge and skills when a client isn't sure.

Whatโ€™s more, a coach is there to help you with your next set of goals after the first ones have been boxed off.

For Matt, this means being in the best shape he can be in for Hyrox, and Iโ€™m glad to be in his corner alongside his PT to help him there.

As someone who is pretty strapped for time,

Iโ€™m always looking for ways to improve my own and my clients training without adding more time.

Because to be honest,

Unless youโ€™re training for a specific sport, who wants to exercise 1000 hours a week?

It should be something that fits around your life, not the other way around.

So hereโ€™s a few handy tips to help out those who donโ€™t have a lot of time:

โฐ spend one hour in the gym per session

So put those between sets Instagram scrolls to the side and get moving ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป keep the intensity high

Superset opposing muscles and move quickly between sets (this one is a massive time saver)

๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ keep progressing the same movements over time.

That way youโ€™ll get efficient and be more able to force good adaptations to the muscle rather than relearning a movement every 2 weeks.

Monday has rolled round again and you might be considering, beginning or in a phase of fat loss.

And thatโ€™s cool.

But hereโ€™s some perspective for you.

How long did it take you to gain that unwanted body fat?

๐Ÿ“† Months, maybe years?

So, it will probably take a similar amount of time for it to get lost again, right?

And within that there are going to be a million fluctuations.

๐Ÿ’ฆ water weight will go up and down
๐Ÿฅ” the weight of the food in your gut will go up and down
๐ŸŽ stored carbs in the muscles will go up and down
๐Ÿ’ฉ you might not go to the bathroom one day to the next

And thatโ€™s going to send the scale weight up and down everyday.

But that doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re not dropping body fat.

These are just natural fluctuations that will naturally distort the weight of your body,

But not the body fat you are holding.

So hereโ€™s some things that might be better spent focusing on.

๐Ÿ“ body measurements
๐Ÿ“ท photos every couple of weeks
๐Ÿ‘• how your clothes fit
โœ‹๐Ÿป how you feel

These things will be a far better measure of progress than just the numbers on the scale.

And remember, the most important thing is that you are consistent in your efforts ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

So the gurus sayโ€ฆ

Or maybe it is, who knows?

One thing is for sure,

Under recovering can be a very real issue.

Especially if youโ€™re someone who runs from task to task and never really takes time to stop.



Of course, to recover physically from training you need to do all the right things.

๐Ÿ˜ด get plenty of sleep
๐Ÿ’ฆ hydrate well
๐Ÿฅฆ eat a well balanced diet

But itโ€™s not only about the physical side.

Itโ€™s about the mental too.

You can be beat up from training and still want to go and hit another workout,

But thatโ€™s not always the case.

Sometimes you can be on the opposite end of the spectrum.

I.e. totally recovered and not feel the want to train.

And itโ€™s at that point that youโ€™ve probably overdone it.

You see, under recovering is not only about how you feel physically.

Itโ€™s also about your desire for training.

If you donโ€™t feel like training a lot, then something about it might not be right for you.

And at that point itโ€™s always good to evaluate whatโ€™s going on.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป too much volume?
๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ not enough variety?
๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ or is it just not fun?

These are all questions to ask yourself next time you donโ€™t feel up to it.

How often should you test your strength?

No jokes. Testing your strength a lot is a one way ticket to

Now, as much as your body can handle a lot of abuse,

It needs time to adapt, repair and grow.

And as humans this process takes time.

A lot.

Meaning that unfortunately for anyone who has lifted weights for a longer than a year or two,

Strength improvements definitely donโ€™t happen on a linear scale.

It takes time to build new strength,

No one goes from benching 100kg to 120kg in the space of a week.

In all likelihood this will take months, but more likely years for us mere mortals ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In this time you should spend time building strength,

Working on sets, reps and weights that will ultimately get you to your desired strength.

I.e. not just throwing on the weight you want and praying to the gains gods youโ€™ll lift it.

From a base level, every 4 weeks or so is a good place to test after youโ€™ve been building up.

Then if you want to reach totally new heights when it comes to your strength,

Try 3 months of building up with tests every 4 weeks.

And see what happens.

One thing I spend a lot of time talking about with clients is how to handle nutrition in a rush, which can be such an issue in these times.

Youโ€™re running around, working on 100 things at once. Leaving the kids here, picking up the shopping there, squeezing in a gym session and so on.

You can get so busy that having a good diet falls by the wayside.

Sometimes itโ€™s just the implementation of a new routine that will pay off in the long run.

This way my clients never lose sight of how far theyโ€™ve come.

all of these things are within everyoneโ€™s grasp.

Really, it comes down to two things:

๐Ÿง  Mindset &
โœ… Action

And the likelihood is, youโ€™re probably already considering making a change that will bring results.

Its true,

Fitness exists on a โ€œuse it or lose itโ€ spectrum.

I.e. You get really good at running 5k, donโ€™t run for months, then your times fall to pieces.

Itโ€™s the same when it comes to lifting weights and getting results from a combination of that and nutrition.

And thatโ€™s where I see most people struggling,

Going down this route of โ€œall or nothingโ€

Thinking that if youโ€™re not all in on your strength and nutrition goals,

Then its just pointless.

And thatโ€™s not the case.

Did you know that even squeezing in two 30 minute bouts of exercise a week can be enough to

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป Increase muscle mass

๐Ÿฆด Increase bone density and

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Improve anaerobic and aerobic capacity?

(Yeh, that last one is basically a fancy phrase for getting fitter)

On top of this we also know that even small changes to someoneโ€™s nutrition can help make massive improvements to your strength and physique.

Things like

๐Ÿฅš Eating a few portions of protein a day

๐Ÿซ‘ Increasing the amount of fruit and veg in your diet

๐Ÿ’ง Getting over 6 glasses of water drank a day

And you cant tell me any of these things are too difficult.

Can you?

So, before you make the mistake of thinking you need to go all in on everything,

Which ultimately leads to falling off.

Just get some small basics right consistently and watch the changes happen.
