Meet the Team - Clare, Care Coordinator 💙 ✨

We've already introduced you to our fabulous team members, Dawn and Ann-Marie. Now it's time for you to meet our other Care Coordinator, Clare.

We managed to grab a few minutes with Clare to ask her some questions to get to know her better 👇

1. What is your role at Always Take Care? I'm a Care Coordinator 💛

2. How long have you worked at ATC? 6 and a bit years.

3. What do you enjoy most about your work? Supporting carers and catching up with them; it's a little bit of home (South Africa). I really enjoy visiting clients and carers and love the feeling of a small close who work together as a team. I'm proud to be part of the Always Take Care family.

4. What's a fun fact about you that your colleagues might not know? I grew up on a farm and farmed for many years. I learnt to drive a tractor and studied to be a Doula at 40.

5. What’s your favourite hobby or pastime outside of work? I enjoy walking, hiking, baking, swimming, yoga and gardening. 🥾 🏊

6. Do you have a favourite book, podcast, or movie you’d recommend? My favourite film is "City of Angels', and I will read any book by Mel Robbins, they're all good. 📖

7. Coffee, tea, or something else? Milo or lemon and hot water.

8. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? It's not quite a superpower, but I'd love to be Tinkerbell and have a magic wand!

9. What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list? Croatia and the Maldives.

10. If you could learn any skill instantly, what would it be? Crocheting, meditating, dancing, sign language and photography - so many to choose!

A big thank you to Clare for taking the time to answer our questions!

In case you’re suffering from post-Christmas blues (or a suspicious lack of leftovers), these ginger cookies are the cure! Chewy in the middle, crisp at the edges, and packed with warming spice, they are an easy one-bowl bake with no rolling pins or messy worktops required. Give them a try!

You'll need:

85g golden syrup
115g salted butter
1 egg
200g caster sugar
350g self-raising flour
2 tbsp ground ginger (use less for a milder flavour)
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C fan and line two baking trays with greaseproof paper.

2. Melt the golden syrup and butter together in a large bowl (microwave or gently on the hob), making sure it doesn’t get too hot.

3. Mix in the egg until fully combined (cool slightly first if needed).

4. Add the caster sugar, self-raising flour, ground ginger and bicarbonate of soda. Stir to form a slightly wet, shiny dough.

5. If the dough seems dry or crumbly, add a splash of milk or water until soft but not sticky.

6. Roll the dough into balls and space well apart on the trays. Press down slightly (more pressing = thinner, crispier cookies).

7. Bake for 10 minutes. The cookies will be soft when they come out but will firm up as they cool.

8. Leave on the trays for 5–10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.

While they’re now enjoyed year-round, ginger cookies are still strongly associated with Christmas and the festive season - especially in Europe and North America. And they go perfectly with a cup of tea! 🎄🍪.

The Always Take Care team just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a very happy Christmas. We hope the festive season brings moments of rest, warmth, and connection - whether that’s gathered around a table with loved ones, enjoying a quiet cup of tea with a good book, or simply taking a breather to rest and recharge.

This time of year can be joyful, but it can also be difficult for a lot of people. Our thoughts are with anyone who is missing someone they love, navigating grief, or spending Christmas apart from family and friends. Please know you’re not forgotten, and it’s okay to feel whatever this season brings.

However you’re spending Christmas - whether you're full of celebration or gently getting through it - we hope you’re able to find a little comfort, kindness, and care along the way. Sending warm wishes to you and yours this Christmas. 🎄

Much love, Bridget and the ATC team

Tips to Stay Connected to Loved Ones This Christmas - Even From Afar 👵👴💛

Christmas is a time for togetherness, but we know that sometimes circumstances mean we can’t be with our loved ones in person. If you’re spending the festive season apart, there are still meaningful ways to stay close and let them know they've in your thoughts:

Make time for a check-in, whether that's a phone call or video chat. Even a short catch-up can brighten someone’s day and help them feel less alone over the holidays.

Send something personal, like a handwritten card, a festive bouquet, or a small parcel. Gifts don't have to be expensive - it’s often the little, thoughtful touches that mean the most to people.

If you can't be with them in person, share the day together in spirit. Give them a call when you open your presents, enjoy Christmas lunch “together” at the same time, or watch a favourite film knowing you’re both doing the same thing.

Create new traditions. A weekly check-in call, a shared crossword, or reading the same book can become a lovely way to stay connected - and not just at Christmas.

Ask how they’re really doing. Sometimes, just listening is the greatest gift. Making time for a conversation can offer comfort, reassurance, and companionship.

Let them know who’s checking in on them and when. A little reassurance can go a long way in easing worries during the festive season.

Being apart from your loved ones over Christmas isn’t easy, but love travels far. Small gestures, thoughtful moments, and regular contact can make a world of difference to those who may be feeling lonely or worried over the festive season.

Nothing says Christmas quite like a tray of warm, buttery mince pies fresh from the oven. With crisp, melt-in-the-mouth pastry and a rich, spiced mincemeat filling, these traditional festive treats are surprisingly simple to make at home. If you'd like to make your own, rather than purchasing mince pies from the supermarket, we want to share this easy-to-follow receipe:

Ingredients you'll need:

300g plain flour (plus extra for dusting)
Pinch of salt
150g cold butter, diced
3 tbsp icing sugar
1 large egg + 1 tbsp cold water
300g mincemeat (filling)
And to finish, 1 egg, beaten + 1 tbsp caster sugar

What you need to do:

1. Pulse flour, salt and butter in a food processor until breadcrumb-like. Add icing sugar, then egg mixture; pulse to a rough dough.

2. Bring dough together, wrap and chill for 20–30 minutes.

3. Grease a 12-hole bun tin and chill.

4. Roll pastry to about 4mm thick. Cut 12 bases slightly larger than the tin holes and press into the tin.

5. Fill each case with 1 level tbsp mincemeat (don’t overfill).

6. Cut 12 smaller lids. Brush edges with egg, seal onto pies, and lightly press.

7. Brush tops with egg, sprinkle with sugar, and cut a small steam slit.

8. Chill while oven heats, then bake for 20–25 minutes until golden in 190°C / 170°C Fan / Gas 5 oven.

9. Cool for 5 minutes, then remove from tin.

10. Serve with your choice of brandy butter, cream or ice cream.

Useful tips:

Your pastry can also be made by hand, by rubbing butter into flour, then mixing in egg. Star lids can be used instead of full lids. And good-quality mincemeat makes a big difference!

These mince pies are best shared, so pop the kettle on and enjoy a little taste of Christmas. Happy baking!

Keeping Our Loved Ones Safe This Christmas 🎄🏠 💛

As we enjoy the festivities, it’s worth taking a few extra moments to think about safety - especially when it comes to our older loved ones. A little preparation can help everyone relax and enjoy a happy, worry-free Christmas. 👇🏻

🎄Watch out for slips and trips. Extra decorations, trailing wires, and rugs can become unexpected hazards. Make sure walkways are clear and footwear has good grip, especially during colder, wetter weather.

🕯️Take care with candles and fairy lights. Candles create a lovely atmosphere, but they should always be placed safely and never left unattended. Battery-operated candles can be a safer alternative, and it’s worth checking that fairy lights are in good working order.

🏠 Keep homes warm and cosy. Cold weather can be uncomfortable and risky. Ensure heating is working properly, rooms are well-insulated, and extra blankets are close by.

☕️ Be mindful in the kitchen. Busy kitchens can be overwhelming. Hot drinks, sharp utensils, and crowded spaces increase the risk of accidents, so taking things slowly can make a big difference.

💊 Encourage regular rest and hydration. Festive days can be tiring. Gentle reminders to rest, drink fluids, and take medications as prescribed can help keep everyone feeling their best.

📞 Check in often. A friendly call or visit can offer reassurance and help spot any small issues before they become bigger concerns.

At this time of year, a little extra support can make all the difference. Whether from family, friends, or trusted carers, knowing someone is there can bring real peace of mind - for everyone involved.
