The weather is absolutely gorgeous at the moment and often brighter and sunnier days can make us feel better. However, hot weather can impact our glucose levels.

Today we're talking about health checks and why they are important! So... what are Diabetes health checks? πŸ€”

🩸 blood tests (checking liver & kidney function and your blood glucose level)

🚽 urine tests (checking for proteins & kidney function)

🩺 blood pressure & heart checks

🦢 foot checks (checking for neuropathy, numbness & signs of infection)

πŸ‘ eye checks (this is when a specialist will take pictures of the back of your eye to check your retina - making sure your vision is good!)

We know that medical appointments can make us feel overwhelmed, fearful, ashamed or embarrassed. We're here to talk through how you're feeling, supporting you to get the best out of your diabetes support and check ups.

Self-care isn't selfish. It's important for our wellbeing and staying well!

Self-care can look like lots of different things and there is no right way! It could look like:

⛅️ going swimming
⛅️ spending time with loved ones
⛅️ grabbing your favourite coffee and reading a book
⛅️ resting and knitting/crafting
⛅️ batch cooking meals for the week

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year its focused on the topic of community! We're going to start by talking about supporting loved ones who are experiencing a chronic illness/long term health condition.

It can be frightening and challenging seeing a loved one experiencing a chronic illness. We may also feel frustrated, confused and that things are unpredictable.

There are different things we can do to support both ourselves and our loved ones:

☁️ Communication
☁️ Checking in - "how are you feeling?"
☁️ Look after yourself
☁️ Cherish eachother
☁️ Acceptance
☁️ Research about their health condition
☁️ Listen

Remember, you don't have to face these thoughts and feelings alone. We are hear for you.

CBT looks to identify and examine the relationship between what you think, how you feel and what you do. It helps you to explore any thoughts and behaviours which may be unhelpful and to support you with developing new ways of coping.

CBT helps you to break cycles between thoughts, feelings, how your body feels and behaviours.... helping you to feel less stuck 😊

April isn't just about bringing awareness to our stress levels. It's also about raising awareness of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) to help us recognise the signs and symptoms of the condition whilst talking about how we can live a happy and healthy life and all things to do with our bowels!

IBS is a common condition in the UK with at least one-third of us experiencing it!

The most common trigger can relate to the stress and frustration of symptoms.. leading us to go round in a cycle... which can lead to us feeling trapped and sad.
