Her name is Clair Roberts. Her time? 12 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds. Most of the crowds were gone, the cleanup crews were out, and the elite runners had finished ten hours earlier. But Clair wasn’t running against a clock. She was running for The Samaritans. As a hypnotherapist, I often talk about the difference between willpower and purpose. Willpower is conscious, it’s brittle, and it runs out when we’re tired or in pain. But Purpose? That lives in the subconscious. Clair was once in a very dark place herself. The Samaritans were there for her then, and now, she’s a volunteer for them. She proved that perseverance isn’t about speed; it’s about the refusal to let your current circumstances dictate your final destination. In your life, you might feel like you’re “finishing last.” You might feel like your progress in therapy, your career, or your personal healing is taking “too long.”But remember Clair. The finish line didn’t move just because she was slow. The medal was just as heavy. The achievement was arguably greater because she had to endure for longer. If you have a “Why” that is big enough, your subconscious will find the “How.” Stop watching the clock and just keep moving.
