The summer is now upon us and I’m sure you are all hoping to make the best of the weather with days out and you may be going on holiday. Well so are most of the population and the chances are you’ll get caught up in congested traffic!

I hope you are all now aware that our backs are not designed for being sedentary and for those that have existing back issues, the likelihood of your back seizing up on a long car journey is greater. Ensuring you are sitting comfortably and minimising the stress on your body is essential, however long your journey. Osteopathy can also help you by making sure that your back is in good order before you set off.

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which aims to help us recognise the ways our mental health can impact our lives, what services are available, and encourage us to talk more openly about our mental health and feelings.

Talking about our feelings isn’t always easy. In the past, mental health has very much been a taboo subject, which prevented people opening up about their mental health and associated conditions such as depression and anxiety. However, times have begun to change, and on the whole, people are much more open to talking about their thoughts and feelings and take steps to look after their mental health.

Katie Creagh-Barry, Counsellor at The Odiham Clinic, is offering a free 15 minute call over the phone, so you can find out more about counselling and decide if it’s the right step for you.

For Katie's full blog follow the link below or call the Clinic on 01256 702140 to book a call.

Did you know that taking a walk amongst trees could improve your immune system?

In Katie Clayton's latest blog, she explains how forest bathing studies have shown that time spent amongst trees exposes us to phytoncides (airborne chemicals that plants give off to protect themselves from insects) which our bodies respond to by increasing the number and activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells, boosting our immune system.

Stress also inhibits the immune system, so if stress is reduced the immune system is already doing better!

Natural landscapes and green spaces have a restorative quality as they give the “thinking” part of our brain a break.

In our overly busy and screen-based lives, the demand for our attention has never been greater, resulting in what is called “directed attention fatigue”.

Time in nature can relieve some of this pressure, improving our patience with family or colleagues and even help those with ADHD symptoms.

Did you know that we need direct exposure to the natural light/dark cycle to regulate our circadian rhythms.
Katie Clayton, Osteopath, recommends getting out in the morning light, even on a dull day (ideally between 7-9am). This lets your brain know the day has started, so it will be more ready for sleep when night comes. 😴

Did you know that walking in nature decreases stress (reducing cortisol and adrenalin), improves sleep, increases activity (enhancing fitness and cardiovascular health) and provides exposure to sunlight (improving mood, vitamin D and increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin), all of which can have a beneficial effect on your health.

In addition, walking after a meal helps regulate blood sugar levels faster, having a positive impact on type II diabetes.
