I originally meant to share this during Neurodiversity Week, but it took time to gather my thoughts—and the courage—to post it!
So now that March MATness has come to an end, here is why it has been humbling for me in more ways than one!
It might surprise you, but my Pilates videos are hard for me to record, watch, and share.
I’ve been trying to share less curated content and stop hiding my “faults”: the funky wrist movements, the accidental bumps into walls, the wobbly knees and ankles.
My handwriting is chaotic, fiddly tasks give me the ick, and in classes I often need extra processing time to understand the task in hand.
Something you may not know: I’m neurodivergent. I have ADHD and Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder). These differences have shaped every part of my life—school, university, work, social situations, and especially my athletic journey.
Recently, they’ve made me more self‑conscious as a Pilates instructor, but also pushed me into some valuable reflection.
There’s so little out there about Dyspraxia in adults & navigating it has been a challenge!
People might see the Ironman athlete but I still remember the kid who nearly drowned in swim class, who was bullied for having bike stabilisers at school, who needed help cutting her food, who struggled to read, write, or understand where her body was in space. The kid no one picked for sports teams. It’s taken me a long time to make peace with that girl and to see her strengths.
Now, I’m proud to call these things part of my quirkiness, and appreciate how they make me a better Pilates instructor and physio:
- I know what it’s like to work twice as hard to learn something.
- I cue in different ways—tactile, verbal, visual—because not everyone learns the same.
- I will support you with kindness & patience
- I welcome the whole you and love figuring out what works for each individual!
In a world full of judgement, surround yourself with people who accept you fully, appreciate your strengths, and make you feel good about who you are - and there'll be nothing you can't do! ❤️✨
