This is a question I get all the time from parents and the answer is yes, all babies need vitamin D. But how they get it will look different for depending on how they are fed. ☀️

In the UK the NHS recommends all babies get 400iu of vitamin D per day. If you are formula feeding then this is already fortified with vitamin D so you don't need to give any additionally as long as your baby is having at least 500ml daily. Once you start weaning and start to drop bottles you may need to top up with a supplement. 🍼

If you're combi feeding then you will need to work out how much vitamin D your baby gets from formula and then top up with a supplement if you need to. 👩‍🍼

If you're breastfeeding then you will need to give a supplement of 400iu per day. 🤱

What if I'm breastfeeding and I take vitamin D, won't they get it through my breastmilk? 🤱

It depends on how much vitamin D you're taking. Most multivitamins will only have between 400-1000iu and this isn't enough to pass sufficient vitamin D into breastmilk. A randomized controlled trial from the Medical University of South Carolina concluded that Maternal vitamin D supplementation with 6400 IU/day safely supplies breast milk with adequate vitamin D to satisfy her nursing infant’s requirement and offers an alternate strategy to direct infant supplementation.

5️⃣ Ways to Support your Mental Health...

Following on from my earlier posts and stories this week here are 5 ways you can support your mental health.

1. Meditation has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and improve sleep. Search on Youtube for lots of options. 🧘🏼‍♀️

2. Getting creative has been shown to boost mood and support mental health. Why not try doodling or colouring in? Or pick up an old hobby that's fallen by the wayside? 🧶🧵🖍

3. Exercise is well known to boost your endorphins and improve mood. It's important to listen to your body and not overdo it. Especially if you've recently had a baby. Maybe start with a gentle walk around the block. Postnatal pilates and yoga classes can be amazing to help gently get you back into exercise and give you time to relax. Check out if you're in Yorkshire. 🏊🏻‍♀️🏃🏼‍💃🏼🧘‍♀️

4. Limiting social media can really help as it's all too easy to end up down a rabbit hole. Especially if you're looking for answers to support your baby's discomfort. Why not organise in-person meet-ups? It's amazing how much better you can feel after a natter with a friend.

5. There's lots of research around mood and food. If you want to learn more head over to and check out Beverley's posts and blogs. Key nutrients to support mood include: Omega 3, Vitamin D, B12, and Magnesium so top up on oily fish, nuts and seeds, leafy greens, avocados and more. Research shows that probiotics can also support mental health with some strains being particularly good for supporting PND. 🥗🥑🥬🐟

This week marks maternal mental health awareness week.

Did you know that 1 in 10 women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or after giving birth?

It’s important that we talk openly about issues like these so people aren’t afraid to reach out and get the help and support they need. It’s also important to bring awareness to these issues as depending on where in the UK you live, your level of support will look drastically different.

It’s an issue that is especially close to my heart as I frequently support mothers who feel alone, lost and like they have nowhere to turn. Who have been repeatedly gaslighted “reflux is normal, are you a first time mum? They’re gaining weight so there isn’t a problem...!” or are generally made to feel like they are making it up or worse... like they are a bad mum.

Positive affirmations like the one above, practicing mindfulness and meditation or just making time for yourself can all help to support your mental health. If your need is greater than that please ask for help. have some brilliant resources and you can access support through your GP.

My DMs are always open if you just need someone to listen.

What’s the best formula for a baby with Reflux?

This is a question that comes up a lot from parents just like you who are longing for a solution to their baby's reflux. Firstly, let me be clear that formula is not a magic wand that’s going to stop your baby’s reflux*. There are many things that contribute to reflux and diet is just one of them.

What is formula?
Infant Formula is usually made from cow's milk and it has been treated and fortified to make it suitable for babies. It differs from cows' milk in that it has been formulated with the addition of vitamins and minerals to ensure it meets the needs of a growing baby. For infants not receiving breastmilk it should be the sole form of nutrition up to 6 months at which point it should be continued alongside the introduction of solids until 12 months.
