We have received a number of enquiries recently on Headlice.

🪳Head lice can be difficult to spot.
Anyone can catch them but pre-school children, primary school children and their families are most at risk.

🪳How do you spot and treat head lice?

Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair and are especially common among young children. They spread through direct head-to-head contact and are not a sign of poor hygiene.

🪳Signs your child may have head lice:

Itching: Persistent scratching, particularly around the back of the neck or behind the ears.

Tickling sensation: A feeling of something moving in the hair.

Visible Lice or Nits: Small white or brown eggs (nits) attached to the hair near the scalp, especially near the nape of the neck; live lice may also be visible.

🪳What you can do:

Use a special fine-toothed comb (available at pharmacies) on wet, conditioned hair to check for live lice.

Comb wet hair with conditioner using the fine-toothed comb every few days for two weeks to remove lice and nits.

🪳Preventing spread:

Check and, if necessary, treat all household members.

There's no need to keep your child off school or nursery once treatment has started.

🪳Treatment if required:

✖️Treat head lice without seeing a GP.

Cases of measles are on the rise in the Greater Manchester area.

🦠 Measles

Measles is an infection that spreads very easily and can cause serious problems in some people. Having the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent it.

Check if you or your child has measles

Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.

The first symptoms of measles include:

a high temperature
a runny or blocked nose
sneezing
a cough
red, sore, watery eyes
Spots in the mouth

We have commenced our school leavers vaccinations for our year 9 pupils at our Hollinwood and New Bridge school here are some side effects / aftercare tips :

The vaccinations may cause some minor and temporary side effects in some patients immediately after the injection.💉These include -

Redness, swelling, or bruising at the site of the injection
Headache
Fever
Dizziness
Nausea
Mild pain in the arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, or toes
Mild muscle and joint pain

The most common side effect is a sore arm – the area around the site of the injection may turn red and feel sore after your child’s vaccination, which can last for up to 2 days. The best thing to do to treat a sore arm is to keep using your arm and try to ignore the pain, as increasing circulation to the area can help you recover more quickly. You can also take over the counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, or apply a cold compress to the area to reduce the soreness. If the pain lasts for more than 2 days, you should consult with your GP.

Your child may also develop a mild fever – some people develop a fever shortly after being vaccinated, as your body starts to produce antibodies to protect you from infection. The best thing to do to manage a fever is to keep yourself cool, make sure you drink plenty of fluids, and try to get some rest so your body has time to recover. You should get in contact with your GP if your fever lasts for more than 3 days.

Some very handy resources provided below from the ERIC UK team

The school nursing team have some healthy tips to help keep your child’s bladders and bowels healthy -

💦 Drink water. Our bodies are designed to run on water and this is the perfect fluid to stay hydrated. Your child should drink 6-8 glasses of water per day (this can be flavoured if necessary but choose sugar-free options). This will help their bladder and bowel stay healthy.

🛌Avoid drinking in the 60 minutes before bedtime and remind your child to have a wee before getting in to bed.Avoid fizzy or caffeinated drinks as these can irritate the bladder.

🏃‍♀️ Stay active. Being busy and getting lots of exercise helps poo to move through the bowel as it should.

🍎Eat your 5-a day. By eating at least five pieces of fruit or vegetables each day this will give your child lots of fibre and help them poo regularly 🥦

🚽 Good toilet habits. Encourage your child to go to the toilet regularly (every 3-4 hours) and not to rush. Use the toilet in a comfortable position, sometimes a small step might be needed.

🧽🫧Keeping clean. Make sure to wash hands after using the toilet and remind girls to wipe from front to back.

Help your child with hygiene if they need it.
Be positive. If accidents happen, or if you or your child are worried about their poo or wee, give reassurance, let them know it’s ok to talk about this with you, speak to them openly and seek advice.
