We were very moved to read Rosemary’s story. 💜
It’s a privilege to support patients like Rosemary here at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
Sending our very best wishes to you and your family.
This is Rosemary, a retired nurse from Oldham who has spoken about the early warning signs of deadly cancer after she was diagnosed with the disease following months of worrying symptoms.💔
She said she first realised something was wrong when she noticed blood in her urine and began losing weight unexpectedly. The grandmother also experienced persistent tiredness before eventually seeking medical advice.
Tests later confirmed she had renal cell cancer, the most common type of kidney cancer. Rosemary received the diagnosis in June 2022 and said her initial prognosis was 'bleak'. 😢
Two months after her diagnosis she had surgery to remove one of her kidneys before being referred to specialists at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester for further treatment. Doctors started her on a combination of immunotherapy drugs - ipilimumab and nivolumab - designed to help the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells.
At the time, the treatment involved nivolumab being delivered through a drip into a vein, which could take at least an hour during hospital visits.
But since November 2025, Rosemary has been able to receive the same medication as a quick injection under the skin at Dr Kershaw's Hospice. The appointment now takes around 10 minutes, dramatically reducing the time she spends travelling and receiving treatment.
Rosemary said the change has made a big difference to her daily life. 🙌
Now a widow with two daughters, three granddaughters and three great-granddaughters, she says the extra time allows her to focus on the things she enjoys. She spends her days volunteering at an Age UK charity shop in Oldham, reading, watching football and seeing family.
Her most recent scan in January 2026 showed no measurable signs of cancer and she continues to respond well to treatment. Experts say immunotherapy drugs such as nivolumab have transformed outcomes for many cancer patients in recent years.
Such a touching story! We’re sending Rosemary our best wishes ❤️
