“Just pop some ice on it.”

Cool...How much ice are we talking? 🤔
A frozen pea?
An ice pack?
Or… this guy ⛄

Ice can be useful, in the right context, at the right time, for the right reason. But icing pain without understanding why it hurts is a bit like putting tape over your car’s warning light and hoping for the best.

❌️ Pain isn’t always inflammation.
❌️ Stiffness isn’t always swelling.
❌️ And sometimes the problem isn’t even where it hurts.

🖐️ “ Scott, You’ve got Mr Miyagi Hands" But why? Can you work out the answer? 🖐

Words every practitioner smiles at. But this case was more interesting than that. Being told you completed magic feels good, but really, we just do our job!

A mid-30s female police officer came into clinic yesterday, after a fall around four weeks ago. During the fall she injured her right hand and finger.
✔️X-rays done.
✔️Medical assessment done.
😞Conclusion, soft tissue injury, rest it and let it settle.

She did exactly what the doctors told her but the pain didn’t settle.
😩Weakness persisted.
😩Movement reduced.
😩Frustration growing.
😩She couldn’t fully curl her first finger.
😩She couldn’t bring it down to the base of the thumb.
😩Grip was weak.
😩And crucially, it was starting to affect her job.

Having been to clinic previously, she knew something wasn’t right and booked in.

The assessment had to start with the history. Ideally, knowing how she landed or how the finger moved during the fall would have given clues to the mechanism. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recall that detail. So instead, we went full detective mode.

🦴 Bony assessment
🤲 Ligaments
🧵 Tendons
💪 Muscle function and strength
⚡ Sensation and neural input

The finger was significantly weak. She could only curl it about 50 percent. She couldn’t touch the base of the thumb. She couldn’t hold or squeeze an object under that finger.

Scott knew what was happening! New where to go next.
So then came treatment.

And here’s the cool and interesting bit.
After around 20 minutes, she could
✔️ Fully curl the finger
✔️ Touch the base of the thumb
✔️ Squeeze and grip objects
✔️ Move the finger freely again
Things that were impossible 20 minutes earlier.
So here’s the question...

That sudden sharp pain in the lower leg is often a calf strain, and it’s one of the most common injuries we see in runners, gym-goers, footballers, and anyone who moves with intent.

A calf strain happens when muscle fibres are overstretched or torn, often during sprinting, jumping, or pushing off hard. Swelling, pain, weakness, and difficulty walking are classic signs.

“I’ve got sciatica.”

We hear it daily. And nine times out of ten, it’s followed by “someone on Facebook told me to just do this stretch.”

Here’s the truth!
Sciatica is not a diagnosis. It’s a general term used to describe irritation of the sciatic nerve. That’s it. It tells us what you feel, not why it’s happening.

The problem with social media advice is simple.

People assume their sciatica is the same as yours. It rarely is.

Common causes of sciatica can include;
🧠 Disc bulges or disc herniations
🦴 Stiff or overloaded lower back joints
🍑 Glute or piriformis muscle compression
⚙️ Poor movement patterns or lifting mechanics
🏋️ Training loads that exceed tissue tolerance
🧍‍♂️ Prolonged sitting combined with weak spinal control.

Two people can have identical leg pain and completely different root causes. Copying someone else’s exercises can delay recovery or make symptoms worse.

At Sports Physio UK Oldham, our practitioners complete a thorough assessment to identify what is actually irritating your sciatic nerve.
Treatment is then targeted at the cause, not just the symptoms, with the aim of resolving it properly and reducing the risk of it returning.
