April is Rosacea Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of this common but often misunderstood skin condition. If you are one of the millions affected by Rosacea you are not alone.
The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, but several triggers and contributing factors have been identified. These can include:
•Genetics: Rosacea appears to have a significant hereditary component.
•Demodex mites: These are natural inhabitants of human skin that may overgrow on the skin of those with rosacea.
•Environmental factors: Extreme temperatures, exposure to wind, humidity and sun can trigger flare-ups.
•Skin barrier dysfunction: A compromised skin barrier may lead to increased sensitivity and inflammation.
•Genetics: Rosacea appears to have a significant hereditary component.
•Dietary factors: Certain foods and drinks, such as spicy foods, alcohol, and hot beverages, are known to trigger rosacea in some individuals.
•Emotional stress and anxiety.
So what can you do? Following a careful daily home routine is imperative but there are in clinic treatments that can help, here is the lowdown on one of my favourites…
Microneedling for Rosacea, here’s the info….
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to treat many skin concerns, such as scarring,
discolouration (such as melasma, vitiligo and solar lentigines) as well as fine line and wrinkles.
It is also known as collagen induction therapy, as it takes advantage of the body’s natural healing response by
stimulating collagen production through the creating of micro-punctures in the skin using miniature sterilised needles
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It works by encouraging the skin to make more collagen. The miniature needles cause intentional minor injury to the top
layer of the skin, which responds by producing certain growth factors. This in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin resulting in a new collagen-rich tissue that is more even
in tone, texture and may also be firmer.
Microneedling improves the integrity of the dermis and epidermis. This increases density, thickness and resiliency of
the tissues, resulting in less redness and the complexion feeling less reactive.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT TREATMENT IS NOT SUITABLE INDIVIDUALS WITH ACTIVE INFLAMMATORY PAPULES OR PUSTULES
Microneedling can help normalise the creation of blood vessels (angiogenesis), replacing compromised and broken
capillaries with stronger ones. It creates vessels with stronger walls and connective tissue that supports the vessels for improved blood flow.
In time, this will lessen the appearance of the vessels under the skin and reduce redness in the skin for an even toned appearance
What to expect afterwards…
You will be very red following treatment (resembling sunburn), which can last up to 24hrs (or potentially longer) during which time you you cannot wear
make up or apply any creams to your face. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so SPF is a must but you must also wait 7 days before exposing your skin to direct sunlight and harsh chemicals. After microneedling, your skin works fairly quickly to rejuvenate new tissue.
Recommend minimum of 3-6 sessions 4 weeks apart.
