✍️ Menopause gets a terrible reputation…
If you believed every headline or horror story, you’d expect it to arrive like an uninvited wrecking ball, taking your sleep, your sanity, your moisture 😉 and your sense of self with it.
But here’s a fuller, more honest picture.
Menopause is not an illness. It’s a biological transition, one that every woman who lives long enough will experience. Yes, it can bring real challenges: hot flushes, sleep disruption, mood shifts, changes in libido, brain fog. These are valid, physiological responses to changing hormone levels and they deserve proper support and awareness, not dismissal.
Its not only that though,
In my work as a Counsellor and Holistic health therapist, Ive mentioned before that I often see something else emerge alongside the symptoms: a quiet but powerful recalibration. Many women describe a growing clarity about what matters and what no longer does. Tolerance for nonsense tends to drop (sometimes dramatically). Boundaries get stronger. People start saying “no” without the hour-long internal debate that used to come first.
There’s also a neurological shift worth noting. As oestrogen levels change, the brain adapts. Some cognitive functions may feel less sharp in the short term (hello, “why did I come into this room?”), but emotional regulation and big-picture thinking often strengthen over time. In other words, you may misplace your keys but gain perspective on your entire life. Not a terrible trade.
Let’s talk about relationships too, because this part often gets overlooked.
Menopause can invite deeper, more honest connection. When communication becomes more direct and needs are expressed more clearly, couples often find themselves relating in a more authentic way. Old patterns get questioned. Emotional intimacy can grow. There’s less performing, less guessing and more truth.
And yes~ s*x deserves a place in this conversation too. When I started reading up about menopause,it scared the feckin life out of me; In regards to s*x all I will say is “dry up like a prune down there”… and you can take from that what you will 😳🙈 lol! …
