Time to end Age Discrimination in NI

It’s time to protect people in Northern Ireland from age discrimination. 💪🏻

We are the only region of UK and Ireland where it’s still legal to treat someone unfairly because of their age when accessing services – whether that’s financial products, transport, healthcare or travel.

While age discrimination can impact all ages, older people are disproportionately affected. Throughout my decade as a MLA, older people have raised with me, time after time, the need to end age discrimination.

This legislation isn’t just about a legal loophole. It’s about how we value older people. Are we content to leave the people who raised us, taught us, and built our communities with fewer rights than everyone else?

This will be last substantive piece of equality legislation left to deliver in Northern Ireland. If we’re serious about fairness across society, this is the next step.

We want to hear from YOU.

Whether you’re an older person, a carer, a service provider or someone who’s witnessed unfair treatment – your experience matters. This is your chance to help shape long-overdue legal protections and send a clear message that older people, younger people, everyone deserves fairness and respect.

The consultation is open until Friday, 20th June 2025.

Housing Survey
As part of the Age Friendly Network Northern Ireland, Housing has been identified as one of our strategic priorities for 2024–2026. To ensure we are creating homes that meet the needs of our ageing population, we are reaching out to gather insights directly from those most affected.

We want to get a better understanding of the housing issues facing older people in Northern Ireland. The information collected will help inform designers, developers, and housing providers, allowing us to influence the development of homes that are better suited for later life.

To support this work, we invite you to complete a short questionnaire. It should take no more than 10 minutes of your time, and your input will make a meaningful difference.

Please click on the link below.

Also attached is a hard copy if the online link can’t be accessed. Please return hard copy to Pauline Clarke, Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, Connect Centre, 16 High Street, Omagh, Co. Tyrone, BT78 1BL

This questionnaire will be live from Tuesday 6th May until Friday 13th June.

Thank you for helping us make Northern Ireland more age-friendly.

The ‘Be Kind, Park with Disability in Mind’ campaign recently conducted a survey to help identify the extent of the misuse of Blue Badge Parking Spaces within the district.

♿ Out of over 270 responses, 94% of people had experienced someone parked in a Blue Badge Parking Space with no badge displayed and 86% said that this had prevented them from finding one to park in.
