Time to end Age Discrimination in NI
It’s time to protect people in Northern Ireland from age discrimination. 💪🏻
We are the only region of UK and Ireland where it’s still legal to treat someone unfairly because of their age when accessing services – whether that’s financial products, transport, healthcare or travel.
While age discrimination can impact all ages, older people are disproportionately affected. Throughout my decade as a MLA, older people have raised with me, time after time, the need to end age discrimination.
This legislation isn’t just about a legal loophole. It’s about how we value older people. Are we content to leave the people who raised us, taught us, and built our communities with fewer rights than everyone else?
This will be last substantive piece of equality legislation left to deliver in Northern Ireland. If we’re serious about fairness across society, this is the next step.
We want to hear from YOU.
Whether you’re an older person, a carer, a service provider or someone who’s witnessed unfair treatment – your experience matters. This is your chance to help shape long-overdue legal protections and send a clear message that older people, younger people, everyone deserves fairness and respect.
The consultation is open until Friday, 20th June 2025.
