On Tuesday we said goodbye to one of our oldest friends of the society,
Richard Riddiough.

Richard and his wife Elizabeth first joined PWOS (formerly Petts Wood Operatic Society) in 1973 taking parts in the chorus and playing many cameo roles. By 1977 Richard joined a quartet of gentlemen in our production of Bitter Sweet singing ‘We all wear a green carnation’ along with Richard Ayling, Alan Wilson and David Middleton.

In South Pacific he was Sgt. Kenneth Johnson, Mr MacGregor in Brigadoon, Sir Lionel 6th Baronet in Ruddigore and Georges in The New Moon.

In 1996, he was our Wizard in the Wizard of Oz and then played Tramp (the uncle that we don’t mention) in Salad Days.

In 2000, he honed his magic skills as a conjurer, playing Montague Druitt in Jack the Ripper and was Chip Brewster in The Best Little Wh******se in Texas.

Some years later, along with Elizabeth they became vocal coaches for the cast when we were rehearsing for Betty Blue Eyes and we needed true Yorkshire accents.

The operatic used to perform at the Crofton Halls in Orpington but in the late 80’s when Richard was Chairman it was his casting vote that moved productions to the Stag in Sevenoaks. The first show there in 1988 was Finian’s Rainbow.

As part of the operatic we owe them both, Richard and Elizabeth a great deal of thanks for all of their support over the years and time and trouble they went through to provide the props for our productions.

He continued to support us, helping ‘front of house’ at our shows and joining in the social events. He will be greatly missed but very fondly remembered.

Coincidently Richard was directly involved in the real story of Made in Dagenham. He was employed by ACAS (impartial advisors to the government) and worked directly with Barbara Castle preparing the white paper for the equal pay act which was subsequently enshrined in law. So, it is particularly poignant for many of us who knew Richard and the fact we are portraying this story in our production in June.

About me ........

A seamless well managed process from initial instruction to ceremony delivery including any follow-up that is required.

In May 2018 I completed and passed the NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy (RQF)

Since then I have been working alongside local funeral directors, delivering personalised ceremonies for local families. I appreciate working with such highly respected professionals and I greatly value the work I do for them and for the families I have worked with.

I have provided ceremonies for all sorts of different ages, different cultures and backgrounds and different circumstances. No one can say this job is boring or samey and the beauty of being an independent celebrant is I can help the family have the ceremony that they want, there’s no set format. I guide them through the process to make sure they find the right balance to honour and pay tribute to their loved one.
